Which of these rules do you find the weirdest?

These rules are made by old dinosaurs. This is why they need new, fresh blood in the Royal House. Can't wait for the younger generation to take over!

They are rules they have created. They don't have to follow any of them, they just change them.

We learnt all this when I was at school in the 50s and 60s because you never know when you might be invited. We were poor but my teacher said the time might come when we were invited to a place like this. It made me think I was worthwhile. I still walk down stairs properly. And have and teach table manners to my grandchildren. You never know, you could still be invited somewhere elegant.

Manners used to be taught here in the South in elementary schools eons ago.

Good for you. It affects behavior. I wish more had your attitude. Also, women today seem to dress mostly in provocative rags from Walmart. We weren’t rich by a long shot, but my mother always made sure we were neat, clean, and appropriately attired in public. It made a difference!

@@southernlady5085 absolutely, when did it become okay not to know your manners. Etiquette and manners should be used in any home, prince and pauper. Manners gets you a long way in life.

In one of the biographies, in the wake of the winning of WWII, the Queen Mother was whining about ladies coming to visit, hatless. Her daughter, the future Queen Regnant, ER II, is reported to have said, "Oh, Mummy, these days girls simply haven't got a hat!". After the privations of the Great Depression, plus about six years of WW II, plus rationing not ending until 1958, the young Princess Elizabeth had more sense than her Queen Consort mother.

Just sounds like a wonderful traditional formal occasion. Maybe archaic but also ensures there are no embarrassing faux pas or awkward moments when people don’t know whether to hug/kiss/which side first. All sounds very sensible and refined.

A bespoke suit is totally made on YOU. Your name might be embroidered onto the lining, but NEVER a size. Even made-to-measure suits won't carry a size, although the sample jacket or pants you try on for your first fitting might.

I can understand the security reasons as well as being “lady-like” in not removing a coat. Where would one place it, for starters, but also it is an easy target for terrorists or others interested in tampering with this article of clothing. Also, the curious would check out sizing or even pick it up to auction it on eBay or the like, or even wear it themselves. In keeping coats on, it’s one less security headache for those that watch over the royals in public.

The usual proper dress for a gentleman at one of these affairs, would be morning dress, with top hat.

I get most of the rationale behind these rules but why would men be allowed to wear only black or navy suits? No brown or tan or gray allowed? Those are neutral colors too. And why does the teacup handle have to be at 3 o'clock at all times? That's weird.

Garlic, scientists are discovering, often causes a tremendous amount of intestinal distress for many, many people who have IBS and colitis, not to mention the normal problems of speaking in the same space as one who has eaten a large amount of garlic. It is a thoughtful gesture to avoid the side effects of garlic by just not serving it. Since this is based on recent research, some haven't made the connection between "tummy troubles" and garlic.

Mr Harold was notified by the Royal Etiquette Commission,
that no director of Royal Protocol Academy or adviser working with the Royal Family ( or commenting on them) should wear unsightly
striped socks with their dark suits , ties and white shirt - as it does not comply with proper protocol. 😑🫣😶🙄
