He knew that female titan is after Eren, so he's using that fact and said that female titan accidentally killed him on the right flank. And he was right, it did distract the female titan.
interestingly, armin said that distraction speech for the female titan to make her believe she killed eren, but he didn't call him by name, he said "she killed my best friend". why would this female titan care who armins best friend is, u less she knows that eren and armin are bffs. the phrasing he used is important
