Direct-to-the-point tutorial. I watched all 14 episodes. As a retired guy, I really learned a lot about fly fishing to start a new, exciting time during my outings. Thanks, Rod.
I'm excited to watch the full series. I live in Montana, minuets from the Black Foot River, about an hour from the Missouri and have never fly fished. It really is a Sin.
Loving this series. I wish I watched this episode before I ordered my fly rod. I bought a KastKing Ascension telescopic fly rod size 8 weight. I hope its not too heavy. I live by Lake Taupo, New Zealand and the trout are generally bigger than most fish I see being fished in the US. I hope its not too heavy.
Thank you so much I learned a ton while watching this. I had no idea about the using the correct weight of line depending on the weight of your rod. Just the little silly things that a self taught fisher woman has to figure out. Now you have me thinking that could be why my casting just seems a little off. Thanks for everything! Someday....I will be saltwater fishing:) Have a Great Day!
First off, invaluable series! Thanks for taking the time to put it together and for sharing all this knowledge. I'll surely be on the lookout for your upcoming book. I'm thinking about picking up a starter kit and am on the fence between the 5wt and the 5/6wt rod. I fish in a North Carolina lake that has tons of panfish but also spotted bass. I'll also be taking it to some of the mountain streams farther west in the state to catch some small trout. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide on which rod best suits those scenarios!
Ben- thanks for watching. Sounds like a 5wt is your best option. Best advice is to call the shop and chat about it. That way we can get you exactly what you need and at the right price. We'll be happy to help. 614-451-0363.
Great info! Playlist auto plays backwards and for people missing common sense might look elsewhere. Outstanding videos I will HIGHLY RECOMMEND to friends, battle buddies and scouts! Thx
This is really very informative so thank you. I haven't fished since I was very young and I'm getting into the sport. How do you know what you're fishing before you catch it? That's something my grandfather didn't teach me
I have a older steel telescopic 8 foot 5 1/2 inch long fly rod when fully extended . Not sure of the year but somewhere in the early 1900's maybe 1930 -40 ish . How do I go about figuring out what weight fly rod I have ? The only thing it has on it is Homaco Bristol Conn.
i took up fishing in 2012. two straight years and almost every lake in Illinois, i only caught one 10lb channel catfish it was so delicious. i'm headed to Montana and was wondering if there were any fish left there? Illinois lakes are out of fish except the local grocery store, and that store bought fish tastes like crap!!
Thanks for the videos. I’m looking at adding a fly rod to my arsenal. I am wondering what you recommend for bigger trout (3-5lbs) that get into faster water.
Great content, thanks for sharing. Just now getting started with flyfishing, curious if you have much knowledge with vintage Fenwick fiberglass blanks? I have a couple FL 102-9 blanks and curious how to properly weight classify them...
Im just getting into fly fishing so im not the most knowledgeable on that r jewlers. But im a big gun guy and grains is a measurement in bullets and charges. In this feild 7000gr equals a pound roughly, it was a common measurement in the 18th century and earlier which is probably how it got there in my best guess.
Not sure if you still reply to these videos still, but I’m a total beginner. Haven’t fished since I was in grade school and these videos are really great at simplifying and explaining the basics, really has me fired up to give it a shot seeing how simple it can be. Im only looking to catch the local bluegill and the odd catfish what would you recommend?
Thanks for checking with us and thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to the shop and they will be happy to help there. That’s what they do!
Just got into fly fishing. Will I damage my 9 foot 6w rod fishing for smaller large mouth bass? 2/3lbs max. I have some ponds close to me that I am thinking of practicing on for trout trips.
I have a very old rod that was my father's (50-60 yrs old). On it's container it looks like it reads 4 1/2 oz. Are/were those made or does it more likely say 4 oz (the printing is not so clear any more)?
Thanks for watching. Please send any and all questions directly to the folks at the shop and they will be happy to help. That's what they do! You can e-mail them or call them.
Is it possible to have an extra spool with an upsized weight fly line, for example: If I want to but 4wt 9’ rod and reel combo mid flex but also have an extra 4wt spool of the same model but with a 5wt fly line. Is that possible? I have been watching you series and it’s amazing, it’s definitely helping me!
I’m looking to get a fly rod and am torn between a 4 and 5wt. I would be using it to fish for mainly average sized trout varying from 1-4lbs and possibly testing my luck in local ponds. Which should I get?
If I'm going to a lake where it's pike season all year and trout (ony fly fishing for trout allowed) season march - october, should I get a 7wt rod? so I can use it when it's pike only as well as trout in season? (I'll be there for the whole year)
If I was to go trout fishing but only had the 2 choices of a 4 or 8 weight rod, which would be better and why? To oversize or undersize if you had to...

Hey Brian, I’m 13 and a bit low on money so I don’t really want to buy a new rod for Pike. Would my 2.40m #5 fast action rod be able to handle pikes around the 60-70 cm? I have caught small ones but just curious, Cheers!
Probably best if you contact the guys at the shop directly and discuss. 614-451-0363 or admin@madriveroutfitters.com. They will answer your question there.

I'm taking notes and... I'm not sure how to ask this question. I understand the rod weight must match the line weight - easy. But then you go on to talk about rod action, or at least that is how my notes progress. The Question: How does Rod Weight, or does it at all, correlate to Rod Action? And is that something I should be concerned about?

Just took a fly fishing class today and felt SO overwhelmed. These videos are helping me understand all the details about fly fishing! Thank you
Should not be overwhelming. Keep it simple and let us know if any questions. Thanks for watching.

Lived in Montana around Butte for 4 years 3 winters and never fished, I regret it now.
I'm out here in Livingston, never fly fished, considering fly fishing along the Yellowstone.
Very informative. I'm coming back to this series! Yeah!

Not important to the video but I think the grains in regards to weight is maybe related to gun powder vs a jewelry term. Another great video!

Both actually correct. It is used for gunpowder as well as gemstones. A few other uses as well.
