I learned to sew on a treadle machine so I knew the answer before you said it. I’m 67’and I started sewing at the age of 9.

That is wonderful! We had a treadmill machine in our house but Mom used her electric one. I think this is when I fell in love with antiquess!

There are a lot of Amish in my upstate NY community. The one thing I’ve noticed about the women’s dresses is they are CRISP! I can’t express enough how crisp they are pressed etc. I asked a woman about her dress, and well…I either got her on a bad day or she wasn’t feeling very chatty. 😂

You are right, they wear the dress so well too...and work so hard...I could never keep up the appearance!

My grandma left the order but I have a huge amish family. She probably wasn’t grumpy, it’s just their culture not to talk about their appearance. Talking about one’s clothing in an excited or appreciating way is discouraged because they believe it’s drawing too much attention to the self.
I remember that when I was a kid I would worry about being fat or pretty and my grandma would make a face and say “My aunt always said, pretty is as pretty does”.
In other words, ‘it doesn’t matter so don’t bother worrying about it’ lol

I just refinished my husbands great grandmothers 1892 Montgomery Ward treadle sewing machine this past winter. I started on a Jean quilt using it. I actually prefer using a treadle vs the electric. The only thing the “old” treadle machines don’t have is a reverse stitch.

From the beginning of the Amish way of living until today, they have been living the kind of life that a lot of people today desire to do and that is getting "off-grid"; the simpler life with few modern comforts and being as independent from the government as possible.
It is very interesting to learn how each group decides how much, or how little, they use modern things. It seems to be a delicate balancing act.

I'm putting together a video now about the origins of the Amish and it will go through the beginnings of some of the reasons they kept splitting. Same thing happened with the Roman Cathothic chursh...coming soon! I too love how they live...all of the noise in our culture can be so tiring! Thank you for watching, and thank you for your comment!

@@LivingThatSimpleLife ....I know that it will be an interesting video; I look forward to watching it. The Christian, or Protestant churches also have a common starting point but split into different denominations as time passed; much like the different Amish groups have done.
I find it very interesting that the Amish/Mennonites, and all of the Christian denominations believe in and try to live by the same basic Bible. The Catholic Church does too, but with the exception of their Bible having a few other books that, even though the books were considered authentic and true and read by the early Christians, the books were not included in the final selection that we now call the Bible.

@@marbleman52 I JUST finished a video explaining this and it does make one wonder if splitting into different denominations is distractng followers from the actual Bible and from God? too worried about all of the rules.

@@IncomeStreamsThatWork ....Yes, you are correct when you said...."too worried about all of the rules." I think about the Puritans who came in the Mayflower; and many others later, who had such a drastic and dare I say, a sadistic interpretation of the Bible.
Whenever I discuss Bible stuff with people, I ask them if they truly believe that God ( I prefer the title Creator) is REALLY concerned about such little things like what kind & color of clothes we wear, long or short hair, beards or no beards , lipstick or no lipstick and so many other affectations ? Isn't He more concerned about who we are inside; our Soul and Spirit...the "inward man" ?
Please understand, I am in no way pointing a finger at the Amish; I have a great deal of admiration and respect for them; they show you who and what they are and they try their best to truly live their Bible. What I am pointing a finger at are the Christian churches ( with some exceptions of course ) that have become just another social gathering and who are more concerned with who drives up in the most expensive car and wears the latest fashions from Neiman Marcus and who belongs to the local Country Club.
I prefer this: Micah 6:8 "And what does the Lord require of thee but to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God."

Yes, they use the same fabrics. The main thing they focus on is the colors to adhere to their community guidelines!

Do you have any information on the type of thread they use? Is it all natural?

    • @LivingThatSimpleLife
      @LivingThatSimpleLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

They will use thread as we do from retailers. We have a local small Amish shop - it reminds me of Odd lots - it is full of bolts of material, thread, etc...It is thread that I would buy from walmart. the colors of their fabric is what they have more rules about...nothing bright and printed for example.

I would think buttons and zippers would help to be modest. Also, plain buttons could be made from wood.

I've thought about that. Possibly over time they may allow this.
