  • World-renowned historian and cultural critic Simon Schama is best known as the droll, erudite host of the BBCs A History of Britain and Simon Schamas Power of Art. But he also indulges in a secret passion: collecting and recounting a vast array of Jewish jokes. Schama joins Festival artistic director Lawrence Weschler to share some of his funniest jokes and unpack their complex cultural resonances in a sort of klezmer slapdown. Simon Schama is professor of history and art history at Columbia University and the author of over a dozen books. His articles have appeared in The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books.

    The trick with humour is the timing in the punchline.. sadly these two gentlemen don't seem to get it. This sounds like two academics trying to tell jokes after a couple of glasses of sherry... sorry guys..

    I was the Schama nanny. Exactly how funny the household was. One night it was Seamus Heaney , Simon, the kids, me, and Morgan the dog....his beautiful wife Ginny was, involved at work as an important researcher. And laughter galore. A fabulous family...fond memories!

    I've heard these told so much better. These people have no comic timing. Killing the jokes. Brevity is the soul of wit. These guys just labor it and add too much blather. Awful.

    no offense to these guys, though i guess i can't help sounding offensive, but i'm jewish myself & i found this all pretty annoying. something more contemporary and beyond this dated, male-only presentation would have been nice...

      oh, and i can't help but saying that the "power of art" was not conveyed here... again, my apologies. this is just really, really dated & not relevant, certainly not powerful.

    It’s 2018 and I’ve just stumbled upon this. I’ve watched quite a few presentations on Jewish humor lately, including several panels of comedians and humorists who can do a pretty fair imitation of the old guys like Myron Cohen, George Jessel, and even Lou Costello. Some of these clever mimics are also intelligent analysts of comedy and good historians as well. This Chicago show just isn’t up to that standard. Frankly, it’s embarrassing. I’m sorry to say that, but these fellows seem to think too much of themselves and not enough of the subject that we’ve come to hear about.

    A Rabbi a priest and an Imam get together to raise money for their religions. The priest draws a circle, throws up some money and says what falls inside the circle is for Jesus, and surely some money lands in the circle. Then the Imam throws up some money and says what falls outside the circle Is for Allah, and even more money is raised. The Rabbi then eraces the circle, throws up money and says: Whatever haShem wants He can keep, but what falls down is mine.

    • @renzo6490
      @renzo6490 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tell it differently:
      A Priest, a Minister and a Rabbi are discussing how they divide up their collection money.
      The Priest says, " First, I draw a circle in the dirt. Then, I take the money from the collection plate and throw it up in the air. What falls inside the circle is Gods and whatever falls outside the circle is mine.
      The Minister, says he does it a little differently; He, too draws a circle in the dirt. Throws the miney in the air. And says, '' whatever falls outside the circle us gods and whatever falls inside the circle is mine."
      The Rabbi says, simply, " I throw the money in the air. Whatever God can catch, he can keep ."

    I'm going to throw this one in here just because I'm awake:
    A Jewish couple is talking about the problems their son is having in the public school he attends. He's doing really good in every subject except Math, and they're concerned about this. They can't get him into a Hebrew school because there are no spaces available, but they find a place for him at a Catholic school. It's not their first choice, but little Menachem needs help now.
    Six weeks later, Menachem brings home his first report card, and it's all A's, including Math! Mom and Dad are obviously very pleased, but Mom wanted to know what had changed to cause this rapid turnaround, so she asks him, "My son, I used to see you struggle with Math every night when you were doing your homework, and now you're doing so well - how did you do this?"
    Menachem said, "Well, the first day of school I go in and sit down, and I look at the front of the classroom. When I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign above the blackboard, I figured they must be REALLY serious about Math!"

    Listening to Lawrence Weschler's Jewish accent is comparable to watching Christopher Walken play the cello in A Late Quartet. He was holding an instrument with sound coming out but it was clear there was no connection between the two. With Weschler you know the man has an accent of some sort but the country of origin eludes...unless it's Adam Sandler.
