  • These are the 2 largest drugstore chains out there. I doubt many of us can even name another one that's still in business. This video talks about how they came to dominate the industry, the different paths they took to do it, and finally some modern comparisons.

Fun fact about Walgreens that you left out: During prohibition they took advantage of a loophole that allowed you to get liquor by prescription, and that's when they saw major expansion.

I've worked at CVS for years now and I have to say that it's the single most poorly ran company in the country. Every store has no more than 2 employees at a time, hours are constantly slashed yet everyone is pushed to their limits to finish what needs to be done, and workers are treated like objects. We are supposed to close at midnight yet are forced to work shirt shifts and close early because of how many hours we have. Our union is fighting for us as we speak, as CVS is attempting to decrease our wages. Our WAGES. The only thing on their mind is money, and they'll ruin everything for us in order to save that much more. However, they don't give a SHIT about theft. For a company that cares so much about money, we're forced to try to prevent theft and deal with thieves ourselves, and not single day goes by without at least one person stealing something. I've witnessed 4 separate robberies of over a thousand dollars too. Plus, since it's only 2 people at a time at night things can get dangerously. I've had plenty of people threaten to hurt me and someone was even waiting for me outside until luckily a cop showed up before we closed. All this and CVS still doesn't care one bit about us, the only thing it'll take for them to wake up is something bad to happen. Oh, and the way COVID was handled was atrocious and should've been illegal, but I won't go into detail about that unless someone asks. People are starting to notice the though, and sales are starting to dip hard in our district. Instead of lowering the crazy high prices or giving us enough people or upgraded equipment that isn't from 2005, they introduced carepass.
CVS is a terrible company, I hope we go down under one day. I can't wait to leave.

I'll give my opinion from the perspectives of both customer and employee. I was taking the Big-3 medications and shopping at Rite Aid happily since 2008. All of a sudden one day - around 2011 I think - my Rite Aid store which was THE BEST pharmacy, closed its doors. I was told that my prescriptions had been bought by CVS which was new in the neighborhood and I could go there to get them. Before long, my employer had picked up Caremark as the PBX and we employees were told we had to get our medications through CVS. This is when things got out of hand. It was around 2016 and I began having to wait for my prescriptions - a LONG time. It wasn't long before I was waiting an extra day or two to pick up my meds and when I went into the store, I once witnessed a tech verbally assaulting a pharmacist - one that I really liked. So I asked him what I needed if I wanted to come to work there as a second job in the evening. It was all about getting my medications on time. The store was so understaffed. I wondered often - Why don't these people want hours or why don't people want to work here? Within a couple of months in early 2017, I was working front-store at CVS waiting for my license to work in the pharmacy. And then to the pharmacy I went. And that was when I discovered the true meaning of the word hell. First, I learned it wasn't that people didn't want the jobs or that they didn't want hours. Truly, the pharmacy could have had 100 techs, but CVS would only let the pharmacy use a sparse number of hours - no where near enough to take care of the customers appropriately, much less to do all of the side crap that the company demands. The truck arrives and about 20 totes of over 300 drugs have to be put on the shelves and in the refrigerator. People start coming in and you have to enter prescriptions. The scripts don't all adjudicate properly so you then have to work that out or call insurance companies. Those scripts have to be filled and along way, you find yourself out of one med or another and you have to cycle count those. Oh wait, there's three customers at the registers and 4 cars lined up in drive-thru. The pharmacist is busy verifying the scripts you just entered and verifying the medications that you just filled. He or she, assuming they really enjoy pharmacy, consult with patients and are there to answer questions. Meanwhile, you look up and realize you now have 8 pages *15 scripts per page so that 120 scripts* to be filled because a lot of electronic prescriptions have come through. You had some help come in a bit ago but right after you took your 30 minute lunch, one of each of those two is gone for 30 minutes. Now things are really bad because it's January and a lot of patients are changing pharmacies because of insurance changes and the patients are coming in asking you to transfer there meds from Kroger or Walgreens. You look at the tons of scripts in the tub to be transferred and you start to wonder when you will get to them. No, you start to worry because at this point, you haven't been able to keep up on those cycle counts (drugs that you have to count), you have 23 prescription hard copies that have to be entered and adjudicated, 15 totes of drugs from the truck haven't been put on the shelves (which is why you can't do those cycle counts), there are now 6 customers at the registers and the front-store won't send help, there are now 9 page of scripts to be filled and the drive thru is calming down but still steady and the pharmacist is looking at you like he thinks you're about to pass out and you begin to feel like you are about to pass out as you remember that you still have to look up a bunch of loose pills which fell to the floor and you have to identify those for the guy who comes to throw those away (why do I have to identify these again?) Oh wait, Lord help me, the outside vendor delivery came and there's two more totes of medications that have to be put away and It's the first of the month so I've got to go through my shelves to take down medications that have or are about to expire and I really want to do that first and then put up the truck and then do my cycle counts but oh lord there's that little old lady that looks like she's about to topple over every time she comes in here and I need to get these customers taken care of. Oh wait - it's 4:00. I WANT to stay and get the work done but the fact is, I HAVE to punch out because the schedule says I get off at 4:00 and as bad as that goes against everything I have ever been taught about work ethic, if I stay over more than 5 minutes, I will get written up. I work for a good boss who did give me a really good raise when I got certified but then his boss told him to take it away so after a month with the raise, they took it back. At this point, I almost begin to weep. I remember when I did care. I still care about all those patients. But, I'm slowly realizing... CVS doesn't care. They don't care about me. If they did, I would have some help surely. I would be allowed the time to do my job WELL and go home with a sense of accomplishment rather than the total frustration of knowing that I will have to come in tomorrow and do all of this all over again. This is one day in the life of a CVS pharmacy tech. And on the weekends... I did this by myself with one pharmacist all day - 10-12 hours usually with no break or lunch and going to the bathroom maybe two or three times. After a while you MENTALLY shut down. You get numb. And the phones! The phones NEVER stop ringing. And to make matters worse, there is this voice of the STRICTEST high school teacher ever, reminding you every 1-2 minutes - "4 callers holding", "2 callers holding", "7 callers holding", and on and on!!! OMG! And the people on the phone. They want to tell you the stories of how their prescriptions were lost or your coworker must have made a mistake because she knows you would never do that and PLEASE HOLD MA'AM... And I look to my pharmacist who needs my attention because he can't find the Meloxicam because it's in one of those totes from the truck that needs to be put on the shelf because Monday is coming in a few hours and another truck with 20 more totes will arrive. I will get caught up next week. Let me check the schedule to see what time I come in since it's Monday. But wait... I"m not scheduled again until Thursday? This must be a mistake. I only have 12 hours. I've been getting 30 minimum for the past few weeks and the manager knows I have two kids to feed and I"m going through this divorce and they took my freaking raise. No it can't be. He said I really am scheduled 12 hours because I couldn't get my work done on time. But I really did.. do care... And the walls close in...
Now WalGreens... Walgreens has a "return-to-stock" system that is antiquated, I admit. But wow they have streamlined the process. It's a joy to go to work at Walgreens compared to CVS. Yeah, they still cut your hours unexpectedly. But I'm thinking that in time they may see that... I... care... Oh well at least at Walgreens, a part-time employee earns PTO and gets holiday hours and stuff. CVS has all these little benes that seem so great but they don't take care of the basics. Who cares if I get a discount on a $2000 Apple Mac if I can't get enough hours to feed my family. At Wal-greens training is sorely lacking. At CVS, 24 hours are NOT enough in the day but you only have to worry about it for 2 - 4 because that's about the number of hours you will be working a day.
In short, pharmacy is a passion. The right techs will CARE for the patients regardless - until they realize there just is no hope left. Even then, some very good techs will stay until they completely burn out and become sour and uncaring or end up exhausted, only to be tossed out by a district manager who never even knew her name because in the DM's eyes, she's not a pharmacist and that makes her yesterday's trash. The big companies have not found the balance between profits and patient care. Yes, I prefer Walgreens but I do see that they have to compete against the 3-letter swamp monster across the street that owns the PBX that forces patients to the swamp. I can tell you I have forged my deepest friendships not in my day job but sweating alongside a caring pharmacist in the pharmacy. I WISH that every DM would wake up each day with the attitude that today will be the day that each employee - regardless of title - will know that they are personally respected and appreciated for the care that those people show for each of their customers every day. I WISH that every pharmacy had the caring, protective manager and staff of pharmacists that I had at CVS. It makes a big difference knowing that others care about you when you can't get to every patient to show them that you care about them. I WISH that these two companies would declare a truce for ONE month and focus whole-heartedly on training their people and truly caring for their patients. I truly believe that both would be more respected and would even be MUCH better companies if only they had DMs who cared enough to care for more than the bottom line. I heard once that the pharmacist is one of the top 5 most trusted professional - I wonder how long that will last with companies doing so much that deteriorates that trust. This is a SAD industry but it is one whose reawakening is patiently awaited by many of us. In the meantime, I will stick with Walgreens and exploring my passion of pharmacy there as long as I can.

@@liamryan7239 that's not how these things work. When corporate power is as consolidated as it is in the US the barrier to entry is generally too high for competitors to feasibly crop up, especially if they're not financially backed by a large conglomerate. Look at cable and college board, for example. They cost way more than they would in a truly competitive market for different reasons. Cable is a super expensive investment, few companies have the capital to enter and combat establishment players. This allows the resulting regional oligopolies to gouge customers. College board has a more natural moat, that being that colleges don't want to have to interpret the result of numerous tests. Again, this results in ridiculous prices for the exam, an unnecessary charge to send in scores even though that could be done for free electronically, and terrible standards and scandals even it comes to the scoring of exams. If there was even some competition in the market college board would be as good as sunk, and rightfully so. I would implore you to reconsider your complacency in the matter, it's actually a very serious problem.

@UC-qRx0kDPNbykQ5gTkVt2SA sakib bari I think you're premise is off from the start. For example, cvs was able to catch up to a big company pretty quickly because it had corporate money to help it grow. Others without that, however, can't compete and are bought up. Also yeah, airbnb and Uber exist, but entrepreneurship is actually pretty low despite the appearance of the contrary. I also think the notion of anyone with an idea being able to do it is pretty obviously wrong considering that hasn't happened and a majority of Americans can't even afford an unexpected 400 dollar expense. I also don't care whether or not I sound smart. I'm a politics and econ major, of course in going to use the technical terms, as they're the proper terms.

They used to have stickers on all products, no barcodes. The cost of the item was written on the stickers in a secret letter code which I will not disclose. Does anyone out there remember it? When a customer bitched about the price, the clerk could adjust it on the fly. They were a good company to work for and management was nice and helpful. Treated you like family. A little known fact about Charles Walgreen. When he had a customer on the phone, he would take their order and continue chatting with them until the customer had to get off the phone because someone was knocking at their door. I worked for CVS for many years. Let me tell you why their profits are higher. All of their stores are dangerously understaffed. All of their employees are grossly underpaid and painfully overwhelmed and overworked. They’re allowed 1 cashier and 1 supervisor. The supervisor opens the store alone and remains alone for a minimum of 4 hours. They are so far behind technologically it was embarrassing. This company is so tight it’s disgusting. I don’t say this out of spite. I loved my job - when I had time to actually do it. As soon as my cashier came in then pharmacy would constantly call me for back up. There’s a CVS group on Reddit that will rock your emotions. I’ve read so many posts of employees that are extremely depressed, suffering from anxiety and even suicidal.
COVID - There is zero sanitization methods being adhered to in the stores. The bathrooms get cleaned maybe once a week and per a survey on the CVS Reddit forum. The pharmacies NEVER get cleaned. They cross contaminate pill counting trays which is a huge violation. They have food back there all the time. Another violation.
Pharmacy staff only gets one 10 minute break on an 11 hour shift regardless of what the policy states (two 10 min. breaks and a 30 min. lunch). So there ya have it.
I now work at Walgreens and it’s like night and day.

I am born, raised and still residing in Chicago. Back in the day Walgreens was the go to. We had neighborhood Pharmacies but Walgreens had that and a whole lot more. They were fun to go to with my Parents. Fast forward to the last fifteen or so years. Another Pharmacy in Chicago was Osco. They were the competition for Walgreens for decades but all their stand alone stores were now becoming CVS's. At the time we preferred Osco because many of them were connected to our home grocery store Jewel and the Chicago Walgreens stores seemed old and outdated. They were everywhere but they were also small, cramped and poorly lit. Just blah. CVS came to town and turned all the brick and mortar Oscos into theirs almost overnight and everything changed. No one here had heard of CVS, that soon changed. Just in my old neighborhood I had three CVS's within walking distance. Two were across the street from each other! The Walgreens in that area was not a store I would shop at. As Chicaoans go we generally don't take to Easterners coming here and changing things but we adapt. In my new neighborhood I have a CVS a block away. I get my scrips and so forth there. I have a Walgreens nearby that is more up to date but still lacks. Sad because here in Chicago we love our hometown businesses but man they are dying. Good video. Thanks.
