right. This whole acting like animals are just so fking dum and don't understand anything is annoying. Anyone that owns a pet and actually knows and cares about animals. Understands they aren't just dum pieces of meat that are alive just there for your attention
These are animals who originally chased prey to survive. They don't have to catch their own food anymore, but they still feel the need to let off steam.
My poodle, Lacey Dew, does it after going to the bathroom. My other poodle, Molson, does it when he wants to play. It's funny to watch them do the zoomies!! It seems like they are really happy when they do it!!
My dog gets pool zoomies when swimming and diving sometimes. He'll forget about the fetch toy and just swim as fast as he can all around the pool for a few laps. Hilarious.
All animals do this even humans. We’ve just convinced ourselves to control it as adults or use the energy for something “more productive” than play. My tortoise gets the zoomies. She does laps around the house and has turned a cardboard box into a ramp that she uses as a treadmill. Tortoise zoomies don’t last a few minutes either. She’ll keep it up for hours in 15 minute intervals to one minute rests. Hey whatever works.
@@Silkytoaster I didn’t say their zoomies are particularly fast. But like Russian tortoises are originally from The Steppes in places like Kazakstan. Arid, but temperate and rocky. In the wild they can go up to 4 miles a day just to find food, so when they want to move they’re just going to keep going. They can climb, they can bulldoze through stuff, dig tunnels that can rival a sulcata… she’ll spend a good hour trying to climb up the wall. It sounds like Stomp is in my house. Russian tortoises need a lot more room than people think or they start going crazy. And then immediately climb under or on top of whatever mess they’ve made and fall asleep for 15 hours.
As a human, I can confirm - when I was younger, I'd have the sudden urge to do something slightly physically taxing - exercise, dancing, or something else.

It must be a relief to crap out some of that toxic food. My friend used to work in the Walmart deli. Guess what happened to all the spoiled meat? Cat food company came and picked it up...
Our cats tear up and down our long hallway and around the living room before and after using the litterbox or sometimes just because they're feeling frisky, and our rabbits used run circles around the living room as well. I've seen horses and donkeys and goats do it, too. Heck, my grandkids do it! I think most living things do. It's basically "getting the wiggles out".
"The Zoomies", or what I call Romp Mode is what dogs do, when humans would be laughing out loud. Dogs have a sense of humor, just like we do. When they find something so funny that a person would be laughing, The Zoomies is the canine version.
My three dogs do this every day when I get home from work. I open the back door and count down from 5 and they're outside running before I get down to two. The kitten stays in though, he doesn't like going outside.
Cats do it too. Perhaps only if you have two, but I've had them fly around the house like crazy, just for fun, jumping from the couch to chairs and so on. Hilarious. They FLY. I actually have always loved doing this too and I hate that I currently can't. You need a nature area or a large grass expanse. Now I need to wait and see if this scientific explanation works for me too because I am not done watching yet. Nope. It's just exercising. Dogs aren't supposed to be living with us is why, just like we aren't supposed to be sitting on a chair and then couch all day. You can do this kind of thing in place, if you're a human, and it's invigorating. But it's hard(er) if you're in bad shape.
Cats as well. We have a 2 story townhome and it sounds like an earthquake when they are doing it upstairs. We may see one or two or even 3 of my cats zooming and they are masters at running and jumping.
My chihuahua mix dog is 13 year old now and when we are at backyard after he does his business, and he sees me , all of a sudden he pause ,ears perks up and looks at me with a side glance and I know that he is excited wherein I also react to those quick movements/poses and then he zooms around very quickly and happily as I chase him around 😊
Our cat Stella Bella Barbarella Hightail gets the zoomies at least once a day. We have a 3 story home and she can go from one landing to the next without even touching all the steps!
Other animals also have episodes of Frenetic Random Activity Periods ( sorry 😊I had to write that at least once in my life ) aka the zoomies . Horses and cows will do and other livestock as well . Not sure if birds do it. Wild animals dont seem to do it that often - more the youngsters. Older animals in the wild may play and chase each other .
My last dog was like that. I'd often see her run back and forth like crazy in the yard, sometimes she'd do it in the house and knock things down. She was part border collie, though, so she always was a high energy dog! She lived to be almost 16 and was energetic to the end. I remember someone told me the acronym FRAP for it, but I had forgotten about that until now
My Corgi had a Corgi friend up the street. Her mom brings her over for play dates a couple times a week and they zoom nonstop, then fall down and rest. So cute .
All my previous dogs had them. But my staffordshire terrier does it most frequently. She races and pants frantically around the house at random moments, as if chasing something.
Weirdly, my 21 year old cat does this exact thing! He tears through the house jumping over and going under things... Lololol. Then... He plops down and waits for loves and kisses❤
