    let's not discredit a singer for a few shaky notes because every singer has their own Waterloo. pasalamat nga tayo that we can hear such beautiful voice for the consumption of our ears!
    sa totoo lang mahirap talaga ang areglo nito. tingin ko si jonathan manalo ang gumawa ng areglo which is good kasi sobrang nag shine ang boses ni lani sa buong album. unlike nung nasa universal siya parang hindi siya masyado nabirit. bumibirit lang siya sa mall shows niya.
    walang singer na makakagawa niyan dito na head voice tapos shift agad sa chest voice. amateur singer lang ako pero alam ko gaano kahirap gawin niyan. kadalasan lahat ng mga professional singers dito manipis ang head voice normal falsetto lang. lani sang in a choir before kaya well-developed ang head voice niya kaya nga kaya niya kumanta ng classical pieces.

    +KusanagiRai very detailed critique. you equally contrasted the strengths and weaknesses of the performance. i think you're a music major. yeah she made the high note seem like she was yawning! i had to listen again to the note and compare in my mind the note from the phantom and it is the same! unbelievable! even sarah brightman sounds strained in the studio recording. lani's note was just flying off the roof! yep the transition from head to chest voice was really shaky prolly because she was sitting and also because this song is really different from her usual fare of songs parang iba yung tessitura tama ba or is it because of the added "whistles" that required her to make more transitions compared to just singing the song straight without embellishments?
    but nevertheless, i still love lani! still one of the best!

    • @KusanagiRai
      @KusanagiRai 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lani is used to "open chest" singing, which involves prominent thyroarytenoid action (thick vocal folds), round vowels, and dynamic support (commonly known in traditional vocal pedagogy as "appoggio"). IMO, she needs to master using the twanger, a stable larynx, and correct vowel tuning in a cricothyroid-dominant (head-voice-dominant) setup.
      The twanger is the epiglottic funnel (or aryepiglottic sphincter), an opening above the larynx. Narrowing the funnel amplifies the higher overtones of the voice, creating an illusion of thickness and a very resonant, bright vocal quality--called "twang"--which causes the skull to strongly vibrate. (This vibratory sensation is often known as "mask resonance", "forward resonance", and "head resonance".) The twang, when maximized alongside a stable larynx, an open throat, firm fold compression, and constant abdominal support in head voice, makes head voice sound like chest. This is commonly known as the "mix", "mixed belt" or "chesty mix".
      The mix is less weighty but more flexible than open chest. Thus it's easier to shift the voice to and from that placement. It can also be stretched to extremely high notes. Listen to how easily this girl navigates her middle range and high notes using the mix:
      watch?v=WGREQ670LrU&t=8m41s
      Some other noteworthy examples:
      watch?v=oq7mryVuE4Q&t=1m50s
      watch?v=vjaGkR7Kifo&t=0m59s
      watch?v=aZ5ZclZTeTU&t=2m28s
      watch?v=K79PR-Ngwk4&t=3m45s
      Many hard rock and heavy metal singers are masters of the mix. Kaya sobrang tataas ng mga boses nila, and still very flexible and piercing, babae man o lalaki (think Aegis, Adam Lambert). RnB & soul singers Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, and Jennifer Hudson are also worth learning from. Regine Velasquez uses a headier variant of it. (Yes, she doesn't like pulling up chest, contrary to popular belief.) I've seen her call it "headtone mix" on her Twitter. :)
      Lani can navigate the high mix, too:
      watch?v=HJiKo04VsrE&t=2m18s
      ...but she rarely uses it! IMO, the mix is her most prominent weakness. If she masters it, it'll be very, very hard to fault her. :)

      KusanagiRai OMG total nosebleed (i'd really want to decipher it though) but i somehow get your point. when i was listening to videos you posted si Patti LaBelle ang unang pumasok sa isip ko.
      oh my you're a true music major! it must be really exciting and interesting to talk to you about these things! KusanagiRai is in the house!
      when she sings "classical", what type of singing style does she use? is that kind of singing not continuous with open chest kaya harder to transition?
      re regine, what does it mean when she doesn't like pulling up chest? so it means, a lot of people incl me were mistaken thinking that she was singing in full chest when she reaches for those crazy high notes? reminds me of her performance of reasons. i think naka twang siya dun sa high note. tama ba?
      watch?v=igd-zkoLzVo
      i really appreciate your very extensive and informative post. i wanna learn that mix! i think i've been singing in open chest also but lately i've been suffering from a condition similar to regine's. raspy and it cracks easily unlike before kaya i'm on voice rest right now.

    • @KusanagiRai
      @KusanagiRai 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leland Ginger-Crescent Sorry about the language, lol. My bad.
      When Lani sings classical, she uses head voice with an open throat (low larynx, raised soft palate--imagine the beginning of a yawn), twang, and lots of abdominal engagement. A low larynx amplifies the lower harmonics of the voice, adding some "darkness" to the sound. But Lani also has some strong twang, which adds brightness or "ring" to her overall sound.
      IMO, the main reason her classical singing sounds so good is she is able to balance the dark and bright qualities of her voice, producing a sound known as the "chiaroscuro" timbre (from "chiaro", which means bright, plus "oscuro", which means dark). Lani is probably the most technically skilled Filipino singer I've heard. :)
      And yes, female classical singing (almost 100% head voice) is markedly different from open chest (almost 100% chest voice, as the name implies). Mahirap yung mabilisang transition, but it can be done with practice. Here's an example of a shift from a "legit" musical theatre sound (not as heady and open as chiaroscuro but close to chiaroscuro) to an open chest sound:
      watch?v=vHvJDMDNHoE&t=3m46s
      At 3:46, Louise Dearman sings in legit head voice but suddenly shifts to open chest to belt out the words "die alone".
      On Regine: "Pulling up chest" is essentially belting predominantly in chest voice. There are two reasons I say Regine doesn't often do it:
      1. I hear a lot of "crying" in her belting. Chesty belting sounds like controlled, sustained yelling. It's thick and somewhat "primal". What Regine does is thinner and whinier. It sounds more like sustained crying than sustained yelling. According to the findings of voice researcher Jo Estill, the cry is caused by phonating with a relatively high larynx and thin vocal folds (head-voice-dominant setup).
      2. Regine herself says her voice is naturally a "headtone mix". She uses that placement more often than its chestier variants. It's her strength. :) And yes, she uses lots of twang to make her high mix sound powerful and "chesty" (you've provided a good example).
      If you really believe she belts in full chest, then she has succesfully fooled you. Props to her. :) The end goal of mastering the mix is to be able to make head sound like chest, and her voice epitomizes just that.

      @pukaka 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      KusanagiRai this is getting really exciting! nah no prob abt the music jargon. i know it'd be difficult to explain it layman's terms.
      yeah i agree. lani is the most technically skilled filipina singer i've heard too. no wonder she was heavily pitted against regine during their SOP days. so lani also uses the twang in her classical singing?
      after reading your post this afternoon, i decided to do more research on appoggio and i stumbled on the videos of franco tenelli and he mentioned chiaro scuro! what a coincidence you just mentioned it also! i really couldn't understand much of what he said but after reading your post above, i understand it more. i also got tips on placement like using a low larynx. i'll try to practice it after voice rest.
      i see. so that's how a steady shift from head to chest in dearman's performance sounds like.
      i kinda get the crying in regine's voice. am i right in my observation that regine uses the crying belt in the final note of Piece of Sky while lara fabian uses a more chesty belt? on second thought, lara might be using the mix too.
      watch?v=TYCB68CWmBk&t=4m14s
      watch?v=gFyFDjnz43Y&t=6m46s
      yeah she really fooled me all this time! hahaha! i thought she had "separate" registers. using head voice like when she's singing Fallin' and using pure chest voice when belting out On the Wings of Love. i didn't know she was mixing the two. still so much to learn! i really wanna learn the mix though.

    • @KusanagiRai
      @KusanagiRai 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leland Ginger-Crescent Yes, Lani's classical singing (actually, much of her singing, regardless of genre) has a considerable amount of cutting power (twang).
      Ah, Maestro Tenelli teaches the ultimate form of appoggio. Lani uses at least a lighter form of it. Halos walang veins na lumalabas sa leeg, halos walang makikitang effort sa mukha, buo at resonant ang boses, magaling sa dynamics, consistent ang timbre, at connected ang vocal folds from top to bottom. These are strong indicators of appoggio. Lani constantly adjusts her breath pressure with the right muscles (inner core muscles and intercostals, or the muscles between the ribs) and keeps her throat generally open. Many contemporary singers control pressure with their neck and laryngeal muscles, kaya alog ng alog ang mga ulo o mukhang hirap na hirap. Si Lani parang may kakwentuhan lang sa phone. :D
      Yes, that's Regine using the cry setup. :) It looks and sounds strained, though. Regine often closes up (super high larynx), maybe due to a lack of dynamic support.
      Strong dynamic support (appoggio) activates what is known as the "tracheal pull". Pinch your nose, close your mouth, and use your other hand to gently grab your adam's apple/larynx. Then, without unsealing your nose and mouth, try to inhale deep into your core. You should feel your adam's apple/larynx drop at least a little. That is the tracheal pull. An appoggio user is able to use varying degrees of it to prevent his larynx from rising too much. Of course, the challenge is to use and maintain it *while singing*.
      On a related note, Regine also has an occasional "Knodel" (Kermit sound), caused by tension at the root of the tongue. This is a sign of bad technique and, again, a lack of dynamic support. It puts direct pressure on the vocal folds. Listen well:
      watch?v=fc3MIMl9_NQ&t=2m28s
      She goes "what kind of fool I aaaaAAARRRM." The "RRR" sound is the Knodel. Even her studio singing has it:
      watch?v=4E1N-v4ZA7o&t=3m10s
      "...must dweeEERRL!"
      Christina Aguilera is notorious for this "gargling" sound too.
      As for Lara Fabian, she is indeed using a chestier setup. It's hard to judge how much head is involved, though. Lara, like Regine, is good at melding her head and chest. Great singers make it difficult for the listener to hear any unintentional, sudden shift.
      It's quite hard to learn the mix without a teacher. You have to know your current vocal strengths and weaknesses and find exercises that work for you.
