    The scene kills because he knows she's the last person in his life that he'll have those kinds of feelings for, and he's giving her up anyway. Jackie scares him because he thought he'd seen it all , then she comes along and makes him feel like a giddy teenager because of the layers beneath beauty and the emotional danger she reawakens in him. They are at a similar place in life chronologically, but emotionally and in terms what living remains for two of them, he's the lion in winter and she's the peregrine ready to fly. He's the wiser of the two because he understands and appreciates the beauty of the moments they shared, but also that their overall moment will not last. After a life of disappointment Max wants to end something on his terms and before he gets emotionally devastated when she chooses to move on. He's turning her down, even if its tearing him up inside. Its a great scene and a subtle, heartbreaking piece of writing. RIP Robert for making it immortal.

    One night in the early 2000s Robert Forster stopped in front of me on his way into the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in West Hollywood. I was playing a homemade shakuhachi and he was curious. We chatted for a moment and he handed me a five dollar bill and told me to have a beautiful night. We chatted a few more times before the store closed in 2011 and each time he gave me a five dollar bill, which I really needed every time. Robert Forster is a lovely human being and death is an illusion.

    This scene hits hard after the day I've had. Forcing yourself to say no to someone, even when you care deeply for them, and knowing they feel the same way about you, really is one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do.

    • @mattropolis99
      @mattropolis99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I had to do this too. I had to say no to a women I loved dearly, but knew we should not get married. Our values and expectations on a few key things were just not compatible. I remember going to my place after and throwing a glass against the wall out of frustration. But I knew it was right then, and know it now. We are still great friends, and with other people. Now in my late 40's, I realize more and more what makes a great marriage isn't the same things that make you feel like a teenager falling in love again. Having one doesn't guarantee the other. Finding both in the same person is a miracle.

    I adore that bittersweet ending: they're obviously in love with each other (especially Max with Jackie), but they are perfectly aware that they can't materialize their romance.
    Max is simply too settled into his quasi-bachelor life and L.A. setting to ever let go, even if he were to quit his job (which he indeed does refer to), and money doesn't do it for him either.
    Jackie's in it for the adventure, and knows that Max won't fit in the equation, despite her badly wanting him too.

    • @Kacpa2
      @Kacpa2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Which is why this ending is so emotionally layered and memoreable for me. Him kissing her the second time shows that he was on the verge of giving in, before the phone rang and she tried to restrain herself to not force him withdrawing. I think they might see each other after her "extended vacation". Ending feels both as open and closed at the same time, closed as them coming apart, mutually unwillingly, but also open as it's up to us to think what could wait for either later. Maybe he eventually reconsiders, or she tires of adventure without someone to share it with, and they meet again somewhere in the middle, or he allows himself to live vicariously through her adventure smiling at thought of her whenever he gets a postcard from her.

      Nah, max cherry wouldn't have gone. He is a straight man, follows the rule what society set. But after seeing Jackie come out of that correction facility, some thing within max woke him up. He just wanted to help her, couple of drinks later, he started to like her more even though she done crime and is likely to go to jail. Next day, after the gun scene listening to delfonics, he started to like her, then was willing to help her any extent even breaking the law. Now he wud have seen a thousand black women go in and out of jail but jackie was the one true person who was a victim off circumstances and not really a criminal, he is scared of her, a little but thats not the reason he refused to go with her. Max thought about his future with her, he cant manage her, she would have had 14" black anacondas every weekend and poor old max , not even a quarter of that size , him being a white man in his 50s and all. He could never satisfy her sexually, then he is straight as an arrow and knows if gets tangled with this woman, he will break many laws and would have got winston to bail him out when he gets caught. Too much too handle so he left out, after she departs, we can see he had geniuine love for her even thinking about going but again, the future plays on his mind, society too is harsh on inter racial couples. Not so much now but back then, the 90s and before, it was bad.

      That we do need, to have someone to share life with, people who dont get it fall to bad habits, addictions or self-destructive lifestyles full of shallow and casual relationships and pleasure seeking as replacement for joy that having someone to enjoy life with would give.
      It doesnt mean you have to marry, but living a lone life without a lifelong friend and lover is empty, unless you pour yourself into something else as replacement...art or music, but even this is not enough, many take their lives away despite being gifted, but forever unhappy.
      As for the film, i love the ending as it, it feel both closed and open at the same time, and just like the film's restraint and subtlety, it adds to it. Including each of us having an opportunity to think how they lives went on and if they stayed in touch.
      Which i also think they did, maybe she even came back after her vacation in Spain and told him all about her travels and reignited something in him again like she did earlier in the film.

    The sequence where she sings Across 110th Street as she drives off is a beautiful full circle moment. Across 110th Street is a meta-commentary on the film because its use reflects Jackie's situation: "Pimps tryna catch a woman thats weak". She might have been perceived as weak after the title sequence when the song plays throughout only for her to be caught by ATF, but in the end she triumphs and we discover her true strength. She was the one who pimped all of them out of their own game.

    Definitely the most down-to-Earth, mature and romantic Tarantino movie. It's interesting he had this in him so early in his career.
    I love the characters and the acting in the film. And really, the whole money deal and the criminal plot play second fiddle to the story about two aging people finding some spark in their life again out of the blue.
    What people often overlook is that it required insane effort on Jackie's part to pull it off. She had to play so many people, all looking out only for their interests, treating her just like an accessory (Ordell) or as a pity case (ATF). The only one who treated her with care was Max.
    Someone she might have laughed off as a dork as a young girl, but now that man literally saved her life. Without him, the plan never happens, because who could she trust with the half a million? Only someone truly honest and caring about her, which he was.
    The ending is sad, because I think after her life, she knows finding a man she can truly trust is almost impossible, let alone someone who is smart, normal, kind. She probably would enjoy his company, but he is too humble, proud and decent to enjoy flying off with her living off of her stolen money. And too old to make a radical decision like this.
    But, he knows this was special and that he let something good he will never get again slip away because he was afraid and too set in his ways to leave.
    And the saddest thing is it was probably the right decision given their age, life experience, etc. That's a hell of a romance, appropriate for two older people who just met each other.

      what makes this scene even sadder/better is when you remember his reaction to her walking out of the county jail when he first sees her for the first time. Most likely dirty and smelly, probably hadn’t showered in a few days and he fell flat on his face for her anyway.

      QT writes a tremendous story. Yes Jackie was disheveled beyond caring getting out of LA County Jail. As someone who has been there myself, for a Traffic Ticket that went to Warrant, I know the Scummy feeling you have getting out of there when Bail is posted. Yes Max fell for her right there and then. Forster nails it with that look on his face. We will be missing you always Bob Forster.

    I find it interesting that "Across 110th Street" was a song made for a movie score - written for the movie "Across 110th Street" (1972). Most songs written specifically for a movie aren't very good, but this is one of the greats. I don't believe it's a coincidence that QT chose a cinema-related song to close out his masterpiece.

    The main theme of the movie is aging and not being able to hack it anymore. Jackie is the only character that can and Max knows he’s too old to keep up. The other characters’ downfall were they thought they could still keep up with that lifestyle but they could not. It’s a real life problem with middle aged men in that some don’t realize they can’t do what they used to. In that regard, Jackie is a superhero.
    The other theme of this movie I think is that Jackie is so underprivileged as a black woman in America, she has to be a superhero just to survive. That leads to her ability to out fox everyone.
    Max knows what he can and can’t do. Max is aware enough that in order to survive he has to slowly fade away.
    He’s also dealt with criminals all his life without getting involved on that side of things and ultimately Jackie is a criminal. He broke that rule for her but knows it has to end there.

There's nothing like the ending of this film in any of his other films that I'm aware of. It's a shame because it demonstrates how much more talented Tarantino is than the majority of his films illustrate. Most of his films come across as tributes to exploitation films. It's very rare to be moved like this by a Tarantino film for me anyway
