    dawn is a teenager who found out she never existed and was created as a key to unlock otherworldly dimensions and right after that she lost her mother and then watched her sister die in front of her having sacrificed herself to save the world. now she’s being neglected by every adult in her life while not being able to process any of the trauma she’s gone through.
    I don’t care how “annoying” some people find her, every outburst or angry remark she makes is 100% valid and none of the grown ass adults who hate on her would have handled her situation any better if they were in her shoes. also, for someone who has gone through what she has it’s a miracle she isn’t more screwed up and is only acting out by stealing.

    A lot of people have issues with Dawn at least they did back in the day but the way I see it is last year nobody let her go outside alone especially after Joyce died. Now they don’t pay any attention to her, she keeps losing people and she’s 15. I do think Buffy is still the best gaurdian even with the issues because they love each other more than anyone else will but they all have to get help. I also think friends would help Dawn but I do think Buffy, for a long time, didn’t even want her to have friends or do anything in case of danger from vamps, then Glory. Its def tough. I feel for both of them.

    The title "Older and Far Away" is taken from a famous line from the novel 'Empire of the Sun' by J. G Ballard (you can actually hear Dawn's teacher mention "things Jim lost during his years in Shanghai, and things he gained" which suggests Dawn's class is studying the book.)
    'Empire of the Sun' is semi-autobiographical and loosely based on Ballard's real life experiences. The book is about a British schoolboy living with his wealthy family in the International Settlement in Shanghai on the eve of the Second World War and then his experiences surviving in an internment camp during the Japanese occupation. Spielberg made it into a film in 1987 starring a very young Christian Bale.
    The actual quote comes near the end of the book after the war is over and a very changed Jim is reunited with his missing parents:
    "...Jim remembered his return to the house in Amherst Avenue, and his mother and father smiling weakly from their deck-chairs in the garden. Beside the drained swimming-pool the untended grass grew around their shoulders, and reminded him of the bowers of nettles in which the dead Japanese airmen had lain. As Dr Ransome stood formally on the terrace in his American uniform, Jim had wanted to explain to his parents everything that he and the doctor had done together, but his mother and father had been through their own war. For all their affection for him, they seemed older and far away."

    About Dawn you have to remember. She found out that she used to be a ball of energy which really affected her. But through all that she had her mom, Buffy, Willow, Tara, Zander, Giles and Anya.
    One by one, they all started "leaving". She went from being the most important thing in the world to almost being ignored. First her dad. Then her mom. Then Buffy. Then Giles. Then Buffy came back but Dawn wasn't the center of attention anymore. Then Giles again and Tara. Then Zander, her crush, is getting married. Spike pining over Buffy. Then Willow started flaking. In her mind, she was alone.

      In most states child support continues till the child is 18. If the custodial parent dies, support then goes to the new guardian. If the non-custodial parent dies the guardian can apply for social security benefits till the child is 18...
      However.... I get the feeling Joyce never filed for support from dad for either child 🤷 leaving him "off the hook"... Although Buffy could probably file against him. But seeing how she likes him, yet never sees him, that's not always an easy decision to make. Would it help financially? Yes. Does she want more family drama/trauma? No, she's dealing with enough.... But.....making them pay is another story, especially since it seems hes traveling in Europe. He must have took his savings and booked. Maybe the "Dawn" spell didnt work on him the same since he's far away, and he suddenly was getting garnished for child support for a kid he doesnt remember, and the court doesn't believe him, of course. So he cashed in his 401k and took off.

    Tara is the only person all season we've seen actually take time to spend with Dawn. Willow nearly did once, but ended up dragging her to that magic crack house instead, where Willow left her for hours. Buffy hasn't made any effort other than being home one night when Dawn already had plans. I don't blame Buffy for not being good at this yet, or even for not being focused given everything she has gone through. But at the same time, Dawn needs familial attachment and direction. This has been a recurring theme with her all season. Buffy ignores her or prioritizes her other responsibilities and her affair with Spike, until it's time to rescue Dawn and then the cycle repeats. And I'm sorry, but a lot of this is Giles' fault for leaving when Buffy was suicidal and Willow had clearly gone over the edge and pushed Tara out of the picture. Leaving at that time really couldn't have been much more irresponsible.

    • @davidsha81
      @davidsha81 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Xander with his construction job, he's not the dad, and he has Anya to take care of. Anya with the magic shop and her responsibilities to that store. Willow going to college while trying to recover and not be irresponsible. Buffy working to keep the bills in check, fighting baddies, being emotionally tested by Spike, and oh yea dealing with dying twice and the latest death you were ripped from heaven and returned to what could be considered hell. During this time Buffy was 21 years old while Dawn was 15, not much of a generation gap, and yet Buffy is the one trying to be responsible. Guiles had one responsibility that was to Buffy and no one else, but time and again he has helped out when he didn't have to. He paid off the mortgage to the house giving everyone a place to live, he has put himself in the line of fire many times when his main job description has only been "watcher". Leaving is what all watchers do when their slayers die, but he didn't do that right away, he stayed and helped, give credit where it's due. Then we have Dawn, theif, self absorbed, does not learn her lessons, spoiled. Everyone has their responsibilities they need to take care of but her, go to school then have itchy hands. We have seen her time and again be (and I know that's the dynamic that was written into the show) in the center of her universe. Yes she is a good person in the fact that she's not out bullying people and actively ruining lives, but she isn't a good person in the sense that she does take things that doesn't belong to her, she shows that she isn't grateful since she stole from people that help her and take care of her, her sister died right in front of her and for her, and 6 months later she's back to screaming and yelling.

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Their job is to take care of Dawn and make sure she's safe, not to hang out with her all the time. That's nice, but not something poor families can afford all the time. Previously, Dawn was shown to have friends. She can hang out with them, at an after school program, or arrange to live with her dad if she prefers.

    Buffy only just now noticing Dawn is having problems is another reason Doris Kroeger didn't do anything wrong and Buffy shouldn't be responsible for Dawn right now. Not as long as she is depressed. Sad fact is Buffy probably destroyed Diris Kroeger's career when Dawn has had numerous valid reasons to call her office up and complain. Does any of that let Dawn off the hook for stealing? No. But considering everyone else, and what they are doing and have done this season, it is understandable why Dawn acts as she did. And in terms of the stealing itself, Dawn is following in her sisters kleptomania footsteps as Buffy "meant to pay for that lipstick" in _Becoming Part 1._ The difference being Dawn's kleptomania in comparison to drug abuse, sex abuse, raising someone from the dead, etc. is a result of the other character's issues (as well as Joyce's death) rather than adults just failing to grow up.
    Very few people ever realize Helfrek and Cecily are the same actor upon first watching, let alone confirmed to be the same character.
    At this point Buffy is able to legally drink alcohol aka 21. There is a difference between having a biological kid at that age and raising a kid Dawn's age at Buffy's age. Either way, Buffy and her friends haven't been doing right in Dawn's regard, let alone each other's regard. That's why the theme of this season is the failure of growing up. Tara comes the closest, and even she only does so because she's cut ties romantically with Willow.
    Dawn is fourteen and a freshman in high school. No job she gets would pay well enough to help out. This is another reason Willow should be doing so. Even though she is also in school it is both easier and more possible for her to be able to help with rent, especially as Dawn now has to pay back her thefts. There's reasons why everything this season gears itself towards the failure in growing up.
    I'm not sure this quite constitutes a bottle episode. The majority of it was in Buffy's house, but there were moments outside it, and Buffy's house is made up of more than one set.

    Halfrek is of course Anya's friend and Vengeance Demon, this is of course the same actress who played Cecily in S5 who rejected Spike so cruelly. An interesting concept here of being trapped in the house, and of course the Richard character is thrown into the mix as well as Sophie, but make things worse. Dawn's Kleptomania now reaching extreme levels. It was just as well it was Tara that caught Spike and Buffy, and great little comedy with the groin cramp with Spike and Tara when playing cards. Dawn again being the total stroppy teenager causing all this trouble again, we know she is going through deep psychological trauma, but it is interesting to see how this affects others, which I think is what the writers were trying to show. The fact that Richard gets sliced by The Demon is also interesting as he is totally innocent but collateral damage because of Dawn's Wish. The Anya/Willow/Tara confrontation was great drama, it is so awkward too when Anya confronts Dawn in front of everyone about the stealing. A bittersweet ending with Willow and Tara reconciling, and great little comedy moment at the end when Richard says you have some strange friends. All in all a good episode mirroring The Wish from S3.

    When there was the possibility of Dawn being taken away, she did listen to Buffy. At least to the point of having the 'mandated reporters' see improvement.
    But she's still troubled and lonely.
    Is she annoying AF, definitely. But she was also written to be a few years younger than she ended up being 🤷 she was written as a 13-year-old and cast as a 15-year-old.... The writer should have made adjustments for the age difference by this point. But they still have her lashing out like a 13-year-old

    Buffy has been shirking her responsibility to Dawn ever since they resurrected her, and even before she died she was in way over her head. Dawn desperately needs some structure in her life. Buffy cannot give it to her because Buffy has to work through her own stuff. In a perfect world Dawn would have been put in foster care until graduation while keeping in regular contact with Buffy who would have been in therapy. Obviously, this being the early 2000s TV was never going to advocate for social services. Their answer to everything was Ritalin and consumption.

    I love yo ur reactions but Buffy will never get welfare or assistance. Buffy does not want any government/faceless Authority to have any sway or say in her individual decisions or life. She is becoming the perfect Ayn Rand woman that understands what being a free individual means. This is part of the journey started in Lie To Me in Season 2. We all have choices , some are difficult but they are the choices we make. It would have been easy to stay with the Watchers Council but Buffy knew to take anything from an organization or government agency is to no longer be free but to be owned. When Buffy tells Giles and the Scoobys in The Gift the last thing Dawn will see is Buffy protecting her. This is also not just for her protection but her life. Keep in mind that Buffy does not take the way that gives up any power over herself and tries to never allow anyone to make claim to her being. One welfare check and she now has to follow a bureaucratic system of what she must do , act, and accept.

    Its hard to sympathize with Dawn for most people, because a lot of people had similar or worse teenage years, and they didn't have a team of superheroes that fight evil on a constant basis around them. That's not to invalidate her feelings, but on TV it's kinda, not very fun. When we met Buffy she was pretty much Dawns age. So in this world, Dawn is too old to be throwing whiney fits as the show is presented.

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the real world, she is too. Buffy's not mean to her, they're good sisters, they love each other, and Dawn knows exactly why Buffy is busy. But they needed to do something for the plot, and Dawn just went through a bunch of traumatic experiences as well, so they had to do something.

    Definitely trying for attention...
    I had a cousin, that was a middle child, that was always looking for attention. His parents were decent.... But even from a young age he would do anything he could to get whatever attention he could get. Even if that meant he was going to hit someone with a baseball bat. He never cared if it was good attention or bad attention.
    Dawn is feeling just lost enough to be in that type of mindset 🤷 doesn't excuse it. Definitely needs to be handled. But I think we can all understand, to a point, where she might be coming from
