@@OneGaurdian Phil ACCIDENTALLY helped Sonia go on the run with Rebecca . Sonia was under suspicion for murdering Pauline Fowler (Martin's mum). Phil wanted to help Sonia because of what she meant to Jamie (Phil's late godson and Sonia's late fiance). I think Phil gave her money for a good lawyer but Sonia took the money and went on the run.
Since Martin believed Phil knew where Sonia was (he didn't. He didn't even know that Sonia was gonna do a runner), he kidnapped Ben and threatened to throw him off the bridge unless Phil told him about Sonia.
It was eventually resolved, and since Phil genuinely felt guilty about Sonia and understood how it felt to have a child taken away by an ex (Lisa and Louise, Kathy and Ben), he didn't seek revenge on Martin.
So yh that's it.

This is the scene that shows that Ben is definitely Phil Mitchells son. Its just a shame that Ben called it quits with this arrangement not so long later. Would have been great to see a proper Martin vs Ben saga.
