When I lived in South Africa as a young girl my parents took me to stay at a resort for a weekend were a couple of km away you could here the lions roaring,thank you for sharing,wathing this video brought back a lot of memories,all my love from Greece 👍❤
I'm all for places like this. Meeting the zoologists behind the running of these places makes me appreciate the need for them, and its massively important that we can home these endangered animals that just couldn't survive in the wild. Plus isn't it really cool to experience and learn about these beautiful animals that we share our planet with. They money the centre earns from quests staying genuinely goes to the care of the animals which is great to see
Fun story. My boyfriend and I were camping near Niagara Falls and were awakened in the middle of the night by that same sound. Assuming it must be a bear since lions aren’t indigenous to the US, needless to say we were terrified. We expected to find numerous tents shredded to pieces when we woke up. We were surprised to see everything seemed unscathed. Come to find out, there was a zoo near by and what we heard were the lions at the zoo. I have never been so terrified in my life. I feel like they should have warned campers. People could have had heart attacks. I almost did. That said, I would loved to have stayed at this place.
The 'theory' that 'wild' animals could 'not' survive in the wild (their 'natural' environment) is down to 2 things. Man poaching/greed, and the mental conditioning of individuals who believe that zoos should be open to the public, opposed to being closed and used strictly for breeding, conservation purposes only. We need to stop using that 'tired' old parental excuse, of zoos are for child education and how will they be funded if not open to the public gawk. Well simple. From a child's education perspective ....read them a book or expose them to animal educational documentaries...take them on a safari!. Has for the zoo organisations and funding. Well with all the money that government waste along with the blah, blah, blah about saving and protecting the environment etc, lets not fool 'ourselves into thinking they cant afford it and the easiest excuse is to keep these 'gold fish bowls' open for the public. An example of keeping wild animals in an 'unnatural' environment would the Monterey Bay aquarium. This was the only place in the world to house a great white shark but 'chose' not to anymore. Why?... because of the high death rate of the shark (which had also 'historically' failed in other aquariums all over the world) 'not' being in its 'natural' environment.

Fact is not being able to survive in the wild is complicated can you guarantee a captive bred animal has not onlu survival skills needed to feed themselves but also the latent skills to be a parent and teach their offspring to survive too. On top there is of course the manmade issues it's more a case of an animal being able to survive being around man than being able to survive the wild of course. Plus there's climate change where said animal might have thrived before it now might no longer be capable

Guys, I really enjoyed this! What a blessing it was to be able to enjoy this experience with you! I think my takeaway is that I view this facility like I might for our long-term care facilities and hospitals. Certainly, it’s sad that people need the care and treatment provided at those places. However, imagine our lives without them. While there are long-term care facilities and hospitals, we’d never want our loved ones to set foot in, we’ve probably heard or seen similar for animals. I’ve always felt the same way you do about animals in captivity. This is the first time I bothered to stop and think about why they were there and maybe not every zoo or sanctuary is bad. I appreciate this perspective and I’m very grateful for places like this who help preserve and protect the animals and try to assimilate them back into the wild. Big love to them. True. Poor things aren’t even on the right continent. There reservations in their own country if they need saving then that’s where people should send their money. But it’s not really about the poor lions.

This is what I respect about you guys. You never try and force your beliefs on anyone. I have many friends of different religions, political beliefs and that is what I enjoy. Listening and learning but able to keep my beliefs and opinions and not be judged. I love animals. I have a season pass at our local zoo and a place I feel safe as a senior to get my steps in. Fresh air and beautiful animals. Thanks for sharing guys truly a great experience. Also not far from here is an animal park that they room free and you drive through and feed the animals. This was amazing to go to after the little babies were born.

We used to live near a lion habitat rescue here in Las Vegas. My husband didn’t realize it and, when I told him I wanted to go, a look of relief fell over his face. He had been hearing (when he would go outside to smoke) them roar while not realizing the habitat was there. He thought it was the sound of him losing his mind. 😂 And wow! What an experience! This is one of my favorites you have stayed at!
This is a great video. As a zookeeper in the UK it's nice to see behind the scenes of other facilities. It's great that you guys are showing the passion and hard work that goes in to caring for these species and how important good zoos can be.
Hi guys! I’m with you and in the ideal world the animals would be free to thrive with zero hunting. Seeing the Lions for example it’s clear due to their very low numbers, then where they are is the next best place. When I was young I didn’t have an opinion but as an adult it makes me very sad and angry when some wild animals clearly do not live in safe, happy, well cared for environments. The world has a long way to go and it’s unfortunate that hunting, removing tusks, horns etc are so sought after at such high prices. Some humans should feel ashamed. This was so interesting and what a super place to stay!! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this, thanks so much 🥰🙅♀️🙅♀️

All of the people claiming this is click bait are hilarious. No one who works with these animals for even an hour would think it's a good idea for strangers to spend the night with something like lions or tigers. Something terrible would happen, and then none of the animals will have a home. The lions walk right up to their windows multiple times though. They may as well be in the room at that point. There are far more obvious click bait situations than this. It's like when people complain about Tread the Globe not physically driving their van the circumference of the world. Really people? How do you think their van would survive a trek across the ocean? People's expectations are so weird. Another great video. You're one of the channels I've come to look forward to the most each week. My grandparents used to live near Port Lympne and so we used to hear the animals all the time whilst sitting in the garden. I haven't been back there for a long time and I had forgotten how lovely it is. Love watching your videos xx

This place is totally amazing and what a great experience for you two. The lions roaring sounds so exciting. These are beautiful animals. I use to love going to the zoo but after seeing some of the animals, like you said, just pacing back and forth and looking so sad, I stay away from them. The organization that is taking care of these animals are doing a fantastic job to maintain the species.

Hey Emma and Alec. As a kid I worked at a zoo and helped take care of the animals. The zoo fostered an environment of protection and care and would find animal welfare organizations that would release animals into the wild . Call it a Sanctuary if you will. Rescue and Release is the way to go. I think it's important that you recognize those animals who can be released and thrive. Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve are doing good work. What a unique experience! So glad you got to see them so close. They are such majestic animals, aren’t they? Years ago , my friends had a mountain lion named Brutus. They acquired him as a cub. I got to know him then, and was fortunate enough to be there as he grew into an adult. He was wonderful. I’d play frisbee with him in the yard, along with their black labrador. They’d bring him to my apartment occasionally, as well. He knew to use the tub for a “litter box”, if you will. Finally, the city made them find a new home for him. They brought him to see me on the way to the airport. He was going to a sanctuary in California. I cried so hard. I hugged him tightly, & he nuzzled my face. He knew he was going somewhere, I think. It was the hardest goodbye. My entire experience with him was magical. I remember it so fondly, & know how fortunate I am to have had that time with him. Of course, I don’t condone any of this, but it’s what it was. I agree with you both, that we shouldn’t have exotic animals in captivity, save for rehabilitation, or saving the species. I joke now that if I were ever to have an encounter, my dumb ass would be there like, “here kitty, kitty”. Again, I’m happy for you to have, & share, your experience. It’s very special. Like you, I feel very ambiguous about wild animals kept in captivity, but I think the U.K. is pretty good at returning animals to the wild whenever possible, and supporting wildlife worldwide. However, I lived in France for a few years, and the situation was very different there. I remember sitting having a coffee somewhere, when a fleet of circus lorries arrived. This included a caged lion. I sat and sobbed, and have never forgotten how defeated the poor thing looked. Animal welfare in general was one of several reasons I had to return to the U.K. Your Port Lympne experience looked amazing, but I really didn’t like the pacing, although your lions looked healthy. It was good to hear how successful some of their rehabilitation programmes have been. Take care, and look after that baby of yours! Can’t be long now! Loving your videos by the way.
Thank you so much for this video. I have always refused to visit a zoo because it breaks my heart to see God's creation locked up like slaves. You have opened my eyes to other side of the story. As did a friend of mine who is a volunteer driver at the aquarium. He too explained that many of the animals are in rehab and later get released back into the wild. Allowing the public to see them is a wonderful way to generate funds to keep the project moving forward. Not to say that there are many zoos that are nothing but prisons for animals. Thankfully places like this one are there to rescue as many as possible.

Over the years, I have stopped taking my visitors to our local (excellent) zoo, because it breaks my heart every time. And it follows me, I agonize about their captivity. But you are right - it is important to realize that our natural world has been buggered up *by us*, and rather than leaving these animals to die in horrible circumstances, at least offering them good care and the chance to keep their species alive is our responsibility.
It is hard to see them in captivity but as you say if they are being poached or other things places like you visited are the best place. There are people out there who really truly care. That was a very beautiful sanctuary.

Well, I came from a long line of rescue. Our family wildlife rescues for on shore and off shore. We do not want to keep animals and our mammals from returning home. But some we must to save their life, these decisions are not taken lightly. But the most important thing is the animals' well-being. I wished I could have been where you guys were, just amazing. As the modern world encroaches on places home to all animals, it is our duty to ensure their habitats don't become shopping malls and that developers are held accountable for shoving consumerism down our throats in the name of progress. So brave you two! Would love to work in a place like that, feeding and caring for animals but maybe not ones that want to eat me ...
What a fascinating experience, and kudos to the guys at the Reserve. I find it very strange that it takes countries such as ours to have places like this where we don’t have these species naturally, to try and conserve those species in countries where they roam free, and such facilities are rare.
The reason I like Yellowstone NP is that the animals aren't captive at all & you can still see them up close. This place you two stayed at seems pretty cool too, for what they do!
I have felt that same sadness you are expressing with regard to animals at zoos. It's put me off visiting zoos! But wildlife preservation seems to be for a different cause, in general, and doesn't make me near as sad. Thanks for bringing us along!
I really appreciate that you look beyond either end of the spectrum, examining the middle ground. I grew up in an era where orcas were just being recognised as being the amazing intelligent animals that they are, this was in part due to the exposure to them in aquariums. But life in captivity for these creatures was and is terrible, and is now so unnecessary and wrong. I am lucky to have seen them in the wild an experience thanks to spending time on the coast of British Columbia. I understand people wanting to go on whale watching tours but am wary of the impact on these whales, so like you I'm torn by animals in captivity for our entertainment.

I am guessing they are using one way glass or that is animal cruelty inflicting Alex in the nuddie in the morning ;) Have to agree my view is very similar but unfortunately we do not live in anything close to a ideal world. Also a well run animal experiences can breed a love for animals in our children helping a new generation who hopefully support the flora and fauna on our planet!

This is so cool! We have a place near where I live (Northeast Florida, US), called The Catty Shack, and it's a preserve for big cats. While they don't have a place to sleep, it is possible to go and view the tigers and other cats they have there, and the admission goes to support the care of the animals. I think they even have yoga - can you imagine trying to meditate with a tiger checking you out??? Anyway, this is probably my fav video of yours that I've seen so far!
Thats so cool. Clever idea to put the accomadation like that. And yes seeing animals walking round and round is disheartning. I recently discovered a lion park in New Zealand near a place called Rotorua in the North Island. They had 2 cubs, male and female and i got to pat the male cub, what an experience! All the lions had been born in captivity and knew no different. They looked pretty bored to be fare.

We all know the first man and woman were given the responsibility of caring for the animals but were disobedient to their creator And lost that privilege. Everything you both have said is exactly how I feel. I follow a group in Africa that find elephants dying from drought or orphans from poachers and they nurse them and get them ready for release into the wild. It's amazing watching them work. I always wonder, how many are going to survive the next poaching season or drought after they've been released though. But I'm happy they have a safe place to grow and get strong while they are there. But at the same time, to see how many animals CAN'T be taken back into the wild is very sad. I saw that there are Zoo's that have a program where they're now doing artificial insemination in some tigers on the brink of extinction because their numbers are so few, that finding a non-related mate (so they can avoid health issues) has become an issue, especially if the female and male won't accept each other, which could lead one to killing the other... Things you just don't think about! I guess in that case, the first priority is getting the numbers up, second is teaching them how to be wild again?? I wish there were easy answers when it comes to this stuff. But as you said, it's not black and white and so much to think about and at least the people running these programs are doing something.
What an experience (another) guys! I grew up close to port lympne and loved visiting as a child in the 70s. I haven't been back for over 30 yrs as I moved away. It's great to see it flourishing and what a wonderful idea to build the lodge. And the lions make such an incredible beautiful sound don't they? It really vibrates through you. It is criminal that places like this have to exist at all but the reality is that until humans change their behaviour towards wildlife they do. Port lympne have been doing amazing conservation work for such a long time. I'm delighted to hear they've had such positive results over the years. Traditional size/type of zoos have mostly died out in the UK thankfully and there are many smaller zoo parks doing amazing work. They've all struggled through lockdown and need us to visit and support them in their conservation work. They also provide excellent educational platforms to teach youngsters how important these issues are. 🙏 for the days these beautiful creatures all get to roam free in their homelands where they belong ❤️
Don't look at it as I have to pay this for only two nights. Look at it as a donation to a worthy cause and as an appreciation for your generous gift you get to spend two nights there. 🥰
It is very expensive, but look at it as more helping with the cost of running the place. There are hotels out there charging that much just for a room, this has so much more.
I suppose they have to generate income to help with the running costs...If there were a group of 4 then it may be manageable, it is a unique experience.

Guys, I really enjoyed this! What a blessing it was to be able to enjoy this experience with you! I think my takeaway is that I view this facility like I might for our long-term care facilities and hospitals. Certainly, it’s sad that people need the care and treatment provided at those places. However, imagine our lives without them. While there are long-term care facilities and hospitals, we’d never want our loved ones to set foot in, we’ve probably heard or seen similar for animals. Fortunately, this place appears to be one of the really good ones! They appear to be doing it right. Always love Mondays with you two! Stay safe guys! 💖💖💖

I’ve always felt the same way you do about animals in captivity. This is the first time I bothered to stop and think about why they were there and maybe not every zoo or sanctuary is bad. I appreciate this perspective and I’m very grateful for places like this who help preserve and protect the animals and try to assimilate them back into the wild. Big love to them. Thanks for sharing this experience, I really enjoyed seeing it 👍

True. Poor things aren’t even on the right continent. There reservations in their own country if they need saving then that’s where people should send their money. But it’s not really about the poor lions.

This is what I respect about you guys. You never try and force your beliefs on anyone. I have many friends of different religions, political beliefs and that is what I enjoy. Listening and learning but able to keep my beliefs and opinions and not be judged. I love animals. I have a season pass at our local zoo and a place I feel safe as a senior to get my steps in. Fresh air and beautiful animals. Thanks for sharing guys truly a great experience. Also not far from here is an animal park that they room free and you drive through and feed the animals. This was amazing to go to after the little babies were born.

This place definitely sounds more like an animal sanctuary opposed to a Zoo. I think sanctuary's rescue from abuse and health risk situations. The guy you spoke with sounds like he is passion driven. I am grateful for people like him in the world.

We used to live near a lion habitat rescue here in Las Vegas. My husband didn’t realize it and, when I told him I wanted to go, a look of relief fell over his face. He had been hearing (when he would go outside to smoke) them roar while not realizing the habitat was there. He thought it was the sound of him losing his mind. 😂 And wow! What an experience! This is one of my favorites you have stayed at!

This is a great video. As a zookeeper in the UK it's nice to see behind the scenes of other facilities. It's great that you guys are showing the passion and hard work that goes in to caring for these species and how important good zoos can be.
Hi guys! I’m with you and in the ideal world the animals would be free to thrive with zero hunting. Seeing the Lions for example it’s clear due to their very low numbers, then where they are is the next best place.
When I was young I didn’t have an opinion but as an adult it makes me very sad and angry when some wild animals clearly do not live in safe, happy, well cared for environments.
The world has a long way to go and it’s unfortunate that hunting, removing tusks, horns etc are so sought after at such high prices. Some humans should feel ashamed.

All of the people claiming this is click bait are hilarious. No one who works with these animals for even an hour would think it's a good idea for strangers to spend the night with something like lions or tigers. Something terrible would happen, and then none of the animals will have a home. The lions walk right up to their windows multiple times though. They may as well be in the room at that point. There are far more obvious click bait situations than this. It's like when people complain about Tread the Globe not physically driving their van the circumference of the world. Really people? How do you think their van would survive a trek across the ocean? People's expectations are so weird.

My grandparents used to live near Port Lympne and so we used to hear the animals all the time whilst sitting in the garden.

I use to love going to the zoo but after seeing some of the animals, like you said, just pacing back and forth and looking so sad, I stay away from
them. The organization that is taking care of these animals are doing a fantastic job to maintain the species.

Hey Emma and Alec. As a kid I worked at a zoo and helped take care of the animals. The zoo fostered an environment of protection and care and would find animal welfare organizations that would release animals into the wild . Call it a Sanctuary if you will. Rescue and Release is the way to go. I think it's important that you recognize those animals who can be released and thrive.
Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve are doing good work. We have to be Good Shepherds in protecting our ecosystem. Thank you, Emma and Alec, for taking us there.

Years ago , my friends had a mountain lion named Brutus. They acquired him as a cub. I got to know him then, and was fortunate enough to be there as he grew into an adult.
He was wonderful. I’d play frisbee with him in the yard, along with their black labrador. They’d bring him to my apartment occasionally, as well. He knew to use the tub for a “litter box”, if you will. Finally, the city made them find a new home for him. They brought him to see me on the way to the airport. He was going to a sanctuary in California. I cried so hard. I hugged him tightly, & he nuzzled my face. He knew he was going somewhere, I think. It was the hardest goodbye.
My entire experience with him was magical. I remember it so fondly, & know how fortunate I am to have had that time with him.
Of course, I don’t condone any of this, but it’s what it was. I agree with you both, that we shouldn’t have exotic animals in captivity, save for rehabilitation, or saving the species.
I joke now that if I were ever to have an encounter, my dumb ass would be there like, “here kitty, kitty”.

Like you, I feel very ambiguous about wild animals kept in captivity, but I think the U.K. is pretty good at returning animals to the wild whenever possible, and supporting wildlife worldwide. However, I lived in France for a few years, and the situation was very different there. I remember sitting having a coffee somewhere, when a fleet of circus lorries arrived. This included a caged lion. I sat and sobbed, and have never forgotten how defeated the poor thing looked. Animal welfare in general was one of several reasons I had to return to the U.K. Your Port Lympne experience looked amazing, but I really didn’t like the pacing, although your lions looked healthy. It was good to hear how successful some of their rehabilitation programmes have been. Take care, and look after that baby of yours! Can’t be long now! Loving your videos by the way.

Thank you so much for this video. I have always refused to visit a zoo because it breaks my heart to see God's creation locked up like slaves. You have opened my eyes to other side of the story. As did a friend of mine who is a volunteer driver at the aquarium. He too explained that many of the animals are in rehab and later get released back into the wild. Allowing the public to see them is a wonderful way to generate funds to keep the project moving forward. Not to say that there are many zoos that are nothing but prisons for animals. Thankfully places like this one are there to rescue as many as possible.

Over the years, I have stopped taking my visitors to our local (excellent) zoo, because it breaks my heart every time. And it follows me, I agonize about their captivity. But you are right - it is important to realize that our natural world has been buggered up *by us*, and rather than leaving these animals to die in horrible circumstances, at least offering them good care and the chance to keep their species alive is our responsibility.

It is hard to see them in captivity but as you say if they are being poached or other things places like you visited are the best place. There are people out there who really truly care. That was a very beautiful sanctuary.

This looks like an absolutely incredible experience, but sadly the Lion Lodge rents for £3,150/night, so we may have to put it off for a while... or forever ;) Lucky you guys to have been able to stay there, and what a treat to be able to live vicariously through you!

Well, I came from a long line of rescue. Our family wildlife rescues for on shore and off shore. We do not want to keep animals and our mammals from returning home. But some we must to save their life, these decisions are not taken lightly. But the most important thing is the animals' well-being. I wished I could have been where you guys were, just amazing. There chuff just Pierce's your soul. Just loved it all the way around . Those animals there are well care for no doubt about it. Hug

As the modern world encroaches on places home to all animals, it is our duty to ensure their habitats don't become shopping malls and that developers are held accountable for shoving consumerism down our throats in the name of progress. So brave you two! Would love to work in a place like that, feeding and caring for animals but maybe not ones that want to eat me ...

What a fascinating experience, and kudos to the guys at the Reserve. I find it very strange that it takes countries such as ours to have places like this where we don’t have these species naturally, to try and conserve those species in countries where they roam free, and such facilities are rare.
The reason I like Yellowstone NP is that the animals aren't captive at all & you can still see them up close. This place you two stayed at seems pretty cool too, for what they do!
I have felt that same sadness you are expressing with regard to animals at zoos. It's put me off visiting zoos! But wildlife preservation seems to be for a different cause, in general, and doesn't make me near as sad. Thanks for bringing us along!

I really appreciate that you look beyond either end of the spectrum, examining the middle ground. I grew up in an era where orcas were just being recognised as being the amazing intelligent animals that they are, this was in part due to the exposure to them in aquariums. But life in captivity for these creatures was and is terrible, and is now so unnecessary and wrong. I am lucky to have seen them in the wild an experience thanks to spending time on the coast of British Columbia. I understand people wanting to go on whale watching tours but am wary of the impact on these whales, so like you I'm torn by animals in captivity for our entertainment.

This is so cool! We have a place near where I live (Northeast Florida, US), called The Catty Shack, and it's a preserve for big cats. While they don't have a place to sleep, it is possible to go and view the tigers and other cats they have there, and the admission goes to support the care of the animals. I think they even have yoga - can you imagine trying to meditate with a tiger checking you out??? Anyway, this is probably my fav video of yours that I've seen so far!

I recently discovered a lion park in New Zealand near a place called Rotorua in the North Island.
They had 2 cubs, male and female and i got to pat the male cub, what an experience!
All the lions had been born in captivity and knew no different.
They looked pretty bored to be fare.
Since I've been a kid, my dream was always to see lions or tigers in the wild... Thank you for letting me live my dream through your travels.
I truly enjoyed your video this week to the Lion and animal preserve! You ask out thought on the care of the Animals , It seems as though their very well taken care of and loved . I commend the people who are spending their time and funds to build a place for the animals. We all know the first man and woman were given the responsibility of caring for the animals but were disobedient to their creator
And lost that privilege.
I feel as though God saw to it that certain people with the knowledge and ability to do this enormous job were led to be the caretakers of his creatures of the wild .
So I am thankful for these dedicated individuals who are putting their selves out there to be used .

Everything you both have said is exactly how I feel. I follow a group in Africa that find elephants dying from drought or orphans from poachers and they nurse them and get them ready for release into the wild. It's amazing watching them work. I always wonder, how many are going to survive the next poaching season or drought after they've been released though. But I'm happy they have a safe place to grow and get strong while they are there. But at the same time, to see how many animals CAN'T be taken back into the wild is very sad. I saw that there are Zoo's that have a program where they're now doing artificial insemination in some tigers on the brink of extinction because their numbers are so few, that finding a non-related mate (so they can avoid health issues) has become an issue, especially if the female and male won't accept each other, which could lead one to killing the other... Things you just don't think about! I guess in that case, the first priority is getting the numbers up, second is teaching them how to be wild again?? I wish there were easy answers when it comes to this stuff. But as you said, it's not black and white and so much to think about and at least the people running these programs are doing something.

What an experience (another) guys! I grew up close to port lympne and loved visiting as a child in the 70s. I haven't been back for over 30 yrs as I moved away. It's great to see it flourishing and what a wonderful idea to build the lodge. And the lions make such an incredible beautiful sound don't they? It really vibrates through you.
It is criminal that places like this have to exist at all but the reality is that until humans change their behaviour towards wildlife they do. Port lympne have been doing amazing conservation work for such a long time. I'm delighted to hear they've had such positive results over the years.
Traditional size/type of zoos have mostly died out in the UK thankfully and there are many smaller zoo parks doing amazing work. They've all struggled through lockdown and need us to visit and support them in their conservation work. They also provide excellent educational platforms to teach youngsters how important these issues are.

It is very expensive, but look at it as more helping with the cost of running the place. There are hotels out there charging that much just for a room, this has so much more.
I suppose they have to generate income to help with the running costs...If there were a group of 4 then it may be manageable, it is a unique experience.
