One of the Greatest Forgotten Bands of All Time. 2 years later on Mott’s 1974 Tour , Bands Queen & Aerosmith we’re opening Acts to Mott’s Headlining Tour. Another Great Mott song is All the Way From Memphis. You will Love it

I saw them at the Palace Theatre in Waterbury Ct on May 4th 1974. The opening act was this new to the US band called QUEEN. We all knew which band was better when we left.

Hi guys, Mick Ronson was the connection between Bowie and Mott, he was a big fan of the band and would later record and tour with Ian Hunter, Mott's lead singer. As with most of Bowie's production work with other artists (Lou Reed etc.), most of the actual knob twiddling and arranging was down to Mick, while Bowie would provide backing vocals, sax and guitar parts. Speaking of which, just sat through 'Moonage Daydream', a just released music documentary on Bowie's life, and it's fantastic if you are a fan, full of very rare versions of some of his best known songs. The Roxy track is one of their better late period songs, but Ferry took the band too far into the mainstream for me, I preferred Manzanera's wailing guitars and Eno's contributions to the early albums.

Mott went on to turn down Drive In Saturday as a follow up. One of Bowie's greatest songs of all time.

I heard Def leppard once say that they was huge fans of Mott the hoople in their youth.

Two massive songs that would win a song battle against most. Roxy Music just shades it for me.

  • @trufflehund

All the Young Dudes shades it for me too. Bowie will always tip the scales. Slightly off-key singing means Lou Reed could easily have sung this.
Love is the Drug was a breath of fresh air in amongst a whole heap of over produced songs at the time. Wonderful bass and sax. Ferry is, and was, so cool. Very good live as well. Saw him in Perth, Australia, December 12 1980, 3-4 days after Lennon's death. He sang his first live performance of Jealous Guy during the show. Elton John was on a few days later. He was very distressed and, like many other rock stars at the time, very frightened. He still put on a good show.
I had the best part time job in 1980-1983. Was part of security at Perth Entertainment Centre. 1 hour running up and down stairs showing people to their seats, then free concert, cash in hand (enough pay to buy 3-4 jugs of beer after the show). Saw anyone who was anybody during that time.

I could never figure out the rejecting "Suffragette City" because it didn't "suit their style"...It sounds like a song Bowie obviously wrote for Mott the Hoople. It even has that sort of Jerry Lee Lewis piano that they would make a trademark on "All the Way from Memphis"...Glad they ended up choosing "Dudes", though, that is the definitive version of that song for sure...

Both classics, but different enough that it is difficult to compare them except for the shared partying/clubbing theme.

Roxy! Love that whole album. If, if Bowie were singing All the Young, Id go there, even though I own the Mott album, going Roxy. Whew long winded. Thanks guys, as always.

I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads was a fan of Roxy Music, that makes sense...And I could see Bryan Ferry being an influence on David Byrne's singing style...

That’s a tough one. I’ll give Roxy Music the nod by a nose . Both these songs were a staple on AOR, that’s album oriented radio for you youngsters. Fun fact Ian Hunters song Cleveland Rocks was the Drew Carey shows theme song. Ian Hunters album You’re Never Alone with a schizophrenic is worth a listen.

There's another song on the Siren album, "Both Ends Burning", that was not a hit in the US but was a single in the UK that Wikipedia says got to #29 there, which blows me away and I think is better than "Love is the Drug". I discovered "Both Ends Burning" while listening to a Canadian rock music program in 1975 and later heard it one time on a US FM radio station, maybe as part of a concert program. Anyway, I love that song to death. Check it out!
Here is what Wikipedia says about "Both Ends Burning"'s critical reception and legacy:
"Both Ends Burning" has seen critical acclaim since its release. The Quietus called the track "sweeping and feverish," while Vulture has praised the song as "defin[ing] the mature use of synthesizers during this time."[7] Paul Sexton of uDiscoverMusic wrote, called it "a less celebrated Ferry composition [than 'Love Is the Drug'] but was cutting-edge in its own way, with synthesizer detail by Eddie Jobson, Mackay's ever-urgent saxophones and Ferry’s impassioned lead."[6] Dave Thompson of AllMusic called it "one of Roxy mach one's most unexpected triumphs" as well as "the undisputed highlight of the otherwise sorry Siren album -- 'Love Is the Drug' notwithstanding."[8]
Johnny Marr of the Smiths spoke glowingly of the song for its fusing of pop and the avant garde, stating, "You listen to 'Both Ends Burning,' that was a pop single! And the attitude of the singer and what he is saying, and the way he is putting his voice across, and just the start of it... That is the best kind of avant-garde, I think."[9] "

You know, just being able to say "The first time I ever heard 'All The Young Dudes', it was from David Bowie playing it in front of me sitting cross-legged on the floor with an acoustic guitar" is pretty much the only lifetime achievement one person could need...

He is officially credited with backing vocals and in a subsequent release on a boxed set years later they mixed his guide vocal more prominently into the song. Thanks

Whoever Fran is, this should have been All The Young Dudes vs Virginia Plane, both from 1972 not 75. Roxy were heading more towards the mainstream in 1975, as opposed to 72 when they were far more experimental & exciting, just saying.

I also thought "All the Young Dudes" was an anthem for gay men. I guess it just goes to show, never trust Lou Reed.
