Absolutely magnificent. While I love all of the Tachibana band content on You Tube, the 2017-2018 group is my very favorite. They just seem to be a bit more precise, and appear to be having more fun. I don't understand how they did not receive the standing ovation that they so richly deserved.
After that session they took a short break whilst the stage was prepared for a sit down orchestral performance which, in my opinion, they showed their versatility and did just as well - and then received the ovations. By the way, a few months later I Music Director was "head hunted" and brought in to make them more of a "string orchestra" (not my words, the translation may not be totally accurate), and shortly after that the then existing MD resigned. ( He did not retire, and now works at another school). Developments since then he has shown his very different approach to music, and other things. Although the new MD had some instant success in the National Championships, deservedly so, within a couple of years the marching performances became rather different. It is a matter of taste what one thinks of the differences, but significant differences there are. These chiefly concern the arrangements of the tunes - a lot of toning down. Others have remarked on the recent lack of "spark" - I saw one reply which pointed out that "spark" was not taken into account by the judges in the formal competitions. But that bit of magic - a combination of musical arrangement and dance moves - was what seemed to grab most live audiences. (Again, a matter of taste - no rights or wrongs). I recently saw the O-Vils combine with another Kyoto band, in a stage performance but that band, at one stage, adopted the dance moves of KT, and boy did they look effective. What KT did achieve was a world beating performance by a bunch of Japanese High School Students, who would have thought it! But the arrangements are different now and the moves are rather different - more formal and staged instead of reflecting the mood of the music. But it must have been difficult to keep on producing that level of fitness, devotion, and musical entertainment, and although senior students were usually good teachers, there can be problems there (good coaches are not made immediately), as several videos indicated. (At the same time, some first years who were finding it very, very, difficult, but they persevered and even, after graduating, went with the band to the USA in 2017-18). There are some sit down performances in 2016 which I would say can compare with anything the present MD has produced. (Some may disagree). But in 2016 they were dressed smartly but, oh dear, they were in open necked shirts, now they have "proper "uniforms. For me, the music comes first. Some people praise the KT version of a Glen Miller swing tune in this performance - compare that with another GM tune in their first visit to Taiwan. Where did the "swing" go? But they are still miles ahead of other bands, for the moment, with a few getting closer with stage-type performances. By the way check out a video from 1999, indoors, which has some classical style stuff but ends up with the best version of "Tequila" I have ever heard, or seen. Even before they took up the dancing, they had a distinct "full of life" feel about them (even the Japanese audience responded well - they can be quite reserved). But that was with the teaching and arrangements of the previous MD. And the students themselves - no complaints, but admiration, but they can only play what they are tutored to play.
Glenn Miller wrote "In the Mood" specifically for the Tachibana band. ----------oh, you didnt know ??----well, he may not have known it at the time ,---but 90 years or so later, the song was received by the intended recipients !!!!!!!!!!!!
The song is a standard along with Auld Lang Syne, which came to Japan about 100 years ago. A high school choir in my neighborhood Tokyo is also customary to sing these songs at their farewell performances.
If Glenn Miller, Louis Prima and Benny Goodman were sitting there in the audience (with the biggest smile you can have), I can guarantee they would do everything they could to be on stage and play with KTSHS.
For those interested in the songs performed in this video after the D-M says 1-2 ; UP-2-3-4, and the rest of the band comes running out doing the "Tachibana Tension Yell", they are: 1. I Can't Turn You Loose - Otis Redding 2. Soul-Finder - Bar-Kays (Where they do the Charelston) 3. In The Mood - Glen Miller (Tachibana Style) 4 I Need To Be In Love - The Carpenters - The center Clarinet Soloist is none other than the D-M herself. 5. Cantina - Star Wars 6. Sing, Sing, Sing - Louis Prima (Tachibana Style) There are several more videos of this same performance, the main one being almost one hour long. In one of the videos one can clearly see the D-M leave her spot, and go backstage to obtain her clarinet. Then after the solo performance, return backstage to put it up and return to her spot. Then after this set, the performers go out into the audience to thank the families that opened their doors and sponsored them during their trip and stay while they were here. They also do it in the sit down performance. In the sit down performance one can clearly see the D-M in the 1st chair in the second row of the Clarinet section. The last song that they performed was their signature song - Sing, Sing, Sing, and the Percussion section was going nuts. When they practice these routines, they do them outside and in the sand. Because if they can remain upright and not slip and slide in the sand, then they can do their routines on just about any surface. They first do them without instruments, then with. All the band members play instruments, even the D-Ms, the Flag Girls, and even the ones carrying the School's Banner. All band members, except boys for now, rotate being Flag Girls and Banner carriers, so that all get a chance to play and perform. In the fall when it is time for the annual band competition, only the best are selected as Flag-Girls. In the Spring, when Kyoto holds its annual celebration, the towns-people gather to see the new Tachibana Band, and the Junior-year D-M will emerge as the Senior D-M, and they all wonder what new songs, and routines that she will present to them. After this performance and parade, the Freshmen class will choose a future D-M from among their ranks, and then she/he will start deciding what new songs and routines she/he will present when it is her/his time. To date that I know of, there has not been a male D-M. Kyoto Tachibana Senior High School Band is the only band that I know of to be invited to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade after the mandated five year waiting period. The only other band to be invited to perform at various major events while in Pasadena. Voted the best all around High School Band by their peers, and College bands. Quite impressive, no wonder they practice 40-hours a week on top of school -work and homework and will travel for hours to get to and from school. (I heard from a friend of mine who at one time that was stationed in Japan, that the train conductor went out of his way to wake up sleeping students on his train. All because they were part of this band. :) :) :) )
Thanks, Alvin, good to know all this information. I was in Kyoto in 2019, and did not know of this great band then. Should I return, it would have to be in Spring, when KT gives their public performances. They thoroughly deserve their reputation.
I was watching another one of this band and I couldn't make a comment so I will do it now. I love this band and I watch it time after time and enjoy the great music and timing of all of the dance moves. I would love to see them in person but I can't unfortunately 😕 😪

I"ve said the same thing, Casey. I would pay a LOT of money for a first row balcony seat to watch them in action. Front row stage is no good because you can't see the choreography like you can from the balcony.
@@CaseyRoche Many people have had similar pipe dreams of being able to pay to see their shows, but regretfully the Japanese system will never allow it. I understand why. Here's hoping the school will allow filming again whenever the band resumes performances.

Fantastic....hard training and enjoying yourself. It radiates from the creen that they enjoy every second of it..when you feel blue, just watch these girls for awhile and everything seems better.. Admiration for those girls and guys... Next year on the opening of the Olympics??? Flawless changing from intimate numbers to huge numbers...
(この動画だとちょっと分かりづらいけどw) 9:12 The trombone unit's moonwalk is super cool !! (It's a little hard to see in this video.) 8:27 過ぎに後ろから聞こえてくるトランペットの演出がまた凄い!! 8:27 The performance from behind the audience by the trumpet unit is also amazing !!
Thank you! I only wish I had a better shot of the other band members, the percussion section looked like they were having fun. What was nice for me was that I got to see that they really enjoyed performing.
Yep, they look like they were enjoying the moment. I wish I was there. I am looking for Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band Fans that might want to be a part of a FAN CLUB in the U.S. At this time, I am only trying to determine if there is a sufficient level of interest to continue the effort. If you are interested, please contact me at this email address - gmkosaka@comcast.net And if you know of others that might be interested, feel free to have them contact me also.
Hi just me aren't they great they are beautiful this is an old video I watch it over and over I don't get any of the new ones they block me out of it for some reason but anyway I'm proud of love the music love the girls love each and every one you don't take care and have a beautiful day good luck to
One day, I hope to hear this band play In The Mood all the way through. Not that their abbreviated version isn't good - it is good - but wouldn't it be nice to hear them play the whole thing. That would be amazing! The applause was well deserved. Love this band!
Thank you people of USA for received Tachibana girls(and some boys) and gave them great experiences. I'm not doing and relating to a band at all, but keen on a school club activity, that still doing a coach on my Univ dinghy sailing club, where I use to belong. I really appreciate for your kindness!
I had a comment sent to me as reply about this band dose not do stage performances, after I had said my comment on the diversity of band in marching, stage and concert. Well if he was to watch this video, he will see he was talking c#*p. I believe this concert was done for charity and special thank you to families in America who opened their homes to them to stay for several days. I not how people realise, but the band pay for themselves for the trip to Pasadena and those families assist in helping with their lodging costs🙏❤️
Orange Devils are almost set to participate in the Rose Parade 2025!!(∩´∀`)∩
In September 2022, the president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association visited Kyoto Tachibana High School and Orange Devils's entry to the Rose Parade 2025 has been decided. I think it's safe to say that their participation has almost been decided. They are currently in the process of applying for the Rose Parade 2025. Their official selection will be announced around September 2023. You can see footage of the president's visit to Kyoto Tachibana High School in the video below. In the video ,the president said "I'm looking forward to seeing you all again in Pasadena", and she was moved to tears when she saw their performance. 2025年ローズパレードに向けてエントリー開始!」 th-cam.com/video/eHq6SBdOyEg/w-d-xo.html

DOMO ARIGATO YOUNG KIDS VERY MUCH
9:12 The trombone unit's moonwalk is super cool !!
(It's a little hard to see in this video.)
8:27 The performance from behind the audience by the trumpet unit is also amazing !!
Thanks for the up close views of the performance. Very nice perspective of this very, very ENTERTAINING Band.
If you are interested, please contact me at this email address - gmkosaka@comcast.net
And if you know of others that might be interested, feel free to have them contact me also.
I wish they can play the music of the BEATLES. That would be awesome.
They did.... The 2015 or 2016 played Obladi Oblada and Hard Days Night.
Very nice! You really captured the event as if I'm in the midst of the audience, the audio is awesome!
Hi just me aren't they great they are beautiful this is an old video I watch it over and over I don't get any of the new ones they block me out of it for some reason but anyway I'm proud of love the music love the girls love each and every one you don't take care and have a beautiful day good luck to
They should have played this instead of the shortened version when they came to the US.
アースの曲は、「You Are a Winner」でした。
One day, I hope to hear this band play In The Mood all the way through. Not that their abbreviated version isn't good - it is good - but wouldn't it be nice to hear them play the whole thing. That would be amazing!
The applause was well deserved. Love this band!
Thank you people of USA for received Tachibana girls(and some boys) and gave them great experiences.
I'm not doing and relating to a band at all, but keen on a school club activity, that still doing a coach on my Univ dinghy sailing club, where I use to belong.
I really appreciate for your kindness!
They are wonderful to watch because you can see their enthusiasm when they play, I think that is why so many people have become their fans.
I should send my club boys back to high school for learn what the enthusiasm is...
Thank you very much for supporting the girls(and some boys...).

Me gusta

@@carp-boya
This is pure happiness! Such AMAZING talent! I am in love with this band! :-)

Nice to see cultural exchanges through music. This Japanese high school band performed Glenn Miller's In the Mood at 2:02.
