The Naxos American Classics series has so many excellent recordings! I love that Naxos cares about this vital part of American culture. So, so important!
Wonderful coverage on Piston who has fallen into obscurity. I have nearly as large a pile of Piston CDs and LPs. I particularly love Symphonies 2,4, and 6. My favorite work is the Piano Quintet, especially when it is performed with romantic emotionalism rather than neo-classical detachment. Older fans like me, who grew up with Piston’s fine books on Orchestration, Harmony, and Counterpoint, also feel gratitude for him as a teacher.
I have quite a few of these Piston recordings - great stuff. He may be my favorite American symphonist. I wonder how many times I’ve listened to the second and sixth symphonies. I also “do not understand” how Walter Piston and his best contemporaries, such as Roy Harris, are so completely ignored by orchestras, record companies, and smart classical music listeners.
Here's a wonderful idea... Next time you're chatting with Leonard Slatkin, you need to convince him to record a complete Piston symphony box...with plenty of extras 😮 I'd luv for it to be with St. Louis 😊
It's not up to Slatkin, but the record companies. There was an impressive broadcast 2nd he did with the Cleveland Orchestra. Very different from the classic MTT/BSO recording, but shows off the glory of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Speaking of Naxos, I heard some of their new releases are CD-Rs. I hope that is not the case. CD-Rs are disposable junk and if I ever receive one, I send it back for a refund. It really irks me when labels are not honest about what they are selling. If they sell CD-Rs, they should let the consumer know they are CD-Rs.
Found the Koch on Tidal! Completely the wrong cover (Orchestra, Conductor, and pieces). Search on Royal Philharmonic & David Amos, or the Gould Dance Variations. Always spelled with a capital i ?
Hi Dave, I like Piston (a review got me when you said he was the american Roussel). Found it awful and weird that there's not a complete cycle. Listening to his symphonies right now, from here and there. Just enjoyed the one directed by Yanassos (N° 3). Will wait "forevaaaa" for a Complete Orchestral Works (LOL). Will check his string quartets soon as I'm done with all the symphonies. I've been watching all your Dvořák videos for a whole week. Damn, I love his music. Thanks for everything. Best wishes for 2025 for you, your family and Milfred & Finster. Ignacio.

That Munch Piston/Martinu/Menotti disc is by me one of the Greatest Recordings EVAAH!
Such a fantastic American neoclassical composer. So many great symphonies and other works to his name.
Sure wondered where the Incredible Flutist would show up -- and upstairs is a great place for it!

Hello David, As always very informative.
Happy Holidays.
Our new MD has program the Piston 4th for an upcoming concert in May. I'm really looking forward to playing it.
You're producing Mini Discs? If so, glad to hear of it....😀
