    Not exactly on topic, but I just wanted to say that since switching to plenums in all the tanks, I've never had new plants melt so little or establish so quickly. I've been in the hobby since the 80's, was afraid of plants until the late 90's (I used to only keep cichlids and catfish, so they weren't really a great option anyway) when I decided to expand my horizons. I can't believe I was duped all this time into believing undergravel filters were bad for plants. I even remember asking my old boss when I worked at an LFS how that could be when you'd think they'd suck all the nutrients in the water to the roots, but he insisted the plants hated having the water running past their roots. Ugh, I feel dumb never just trying it.

    I keep peroxide on hand so in case I see any algae
    I can knock it out B-4 it takes hold of my plants.
    I learned that trick a few years ago when I had
    started a planted tank & haven't had seen any
    since, but every other month I'll dose the tank
    with peroxide to kill what algae I see on the walls
    when I do a water change & it does a good job.

    For me the best thing for controlling algae is by the rule "an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure".
    What that means is during my weekly maintenance after cleaning the rocks and corners with a toothbrush (if needed) and cleaning the glass with a plastic card, I'll waft the card through the plants to lift up any wasts solids from the substrate into the water column so it can be removed during the water change or let my filter catch it.
    I don't gravel vac anymore because I have too many plants. I also never leave my lights on longer than 8 hours. I keep snails and mollies that are constantly grazing for algae keeping my plants clean too. The only algae I get is a little bit of green spot if you try really hard to find it lol.
    I no longer have to treat anymore slimy red algae outbreaks since I installed my plenum. That tells me the system really works!
    Another tip for those who don't want to get their whole arm wet or if you have a deep tank. Take a turkey baster and add a piece of tubing to the end making it longer and gently blow water into those hard to clean areas under plants and into bushy plants like moss or carpeting plants to remove the muck that gets trapped inside. Otherwise uneaten food and fish waste can build up out of sight breaking feeding more algae.

      You made a statement that you don't gravel vac anymore because you have too many plants, I've often said the same thing. How can you gravel vac if your tank is just full of so many plants that it hinders you from doing it?

    • @vanissaberg5824
      @vanissaberg5824 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anoxicfiltrationplenums a lot of videos I've seen people say you don't ever have to gravel vac planted tanks. I guess the logic is all the waste will eventually make its way down to the plant roots feeding the plants. Especially tanks that use soil or dirt. Those are impossible to gravel vac without pulling up the soil and making a giant mess. But as it builds up so much rotting material you'll eventually have a crash.
      I went through that, so that's why I switched to a slow moving plenum to keep my substrate from becoming a ticking time bomb and killing all my fish like it did in the past. Plus gravel cleaning is basically impossible to do without disturbing the plant roots.

    Good info on phosphates!
    Ever since I decided to start my tanks with ONLY tissue culture plants I’ve never had any filamentous algae despite some plants being exposed to full Sun light. I do change water partially once in awhile.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard the same thing with tissue cultured plants. However, they cost 2 to 3 times more than just buying a normal greenhouse growing plant so they're not quite that popular only for people who can afford it.

      @synthesaurus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anoxicfiltrationplenums I buy a few and grow them in a grow tank with some CO2 and grow light. One cup produces a lot of plants to eventually plant in a bigger tank. Pays off in the end ;')

    I love your info on moss maintenance, I have heard of using peroxide before, but never exposing the plants and spraying directly on them. If the moss is mounted on a smaller piece of wood, it may be practical (not always) just to lift the wood out of the aquarium and spray it, rather than in place, but this may not be practical for a larger setup like you have.

    'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
    The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
    In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
    The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
    While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
    And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
    Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
    When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
    I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
    Away to the window I flew like a flash,
    Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
    The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
    Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
    When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
    But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
    With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
    I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
    More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
    And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
    "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
    On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
    To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
    Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
    As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
    When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
    So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
    With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
    And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
    The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
    As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
    Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
    He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
    And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
    A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
    And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
    His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
    His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
    His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
    And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
    The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
    And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
    He had a broad face and a little round belly,
    That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
    He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
    And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
    Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
    He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
    And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
    And laying his finger aside of his nose,
    And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
    He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
    And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
    But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
    "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

    Could you do a video on the biology of the fish slime coat, its role on fish health, how to improve it, etc. Also I've noticed my goldfish at times peck at each others slime coat. The fish being pecked stays completely still while being pecked & it doesn't seem to adversely affect them but is this natural and what is the reason for this?

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here's what I've noticed when you see other goldfish picking on another fish. The fish that they're picking on usually has something wrong with it and may not be showing it to the point it's obvious to the hobbiest. Keep an eye on the fish or remove it because it could have a medical problem that may end up to its demise.

      @@anoxicfiltrationplenums Thanks. I will keep an eye on it. However, it is the weakest one which seems to be pecking on the slime coats of the healthier more robust looking ones.
