Sequestrum is to be completely separated from parent bone in xray and Involucrum should be formed strong enough. I read that these two conditions should be satisfied before opting for sequestrum removal. Please how do we determine via xray that involucrum is strong enough or not?

Thank you for the video Dr! I really appreciate you taking time to make it. My 10 yr old son just had surgery on his distal right femur. They found scant pus outside the bone and inside. Is this chronic or acute OM? They are prescribing 3-4 mo of oral antibiotics. What are the chances of it recurring and requiring additional surgery? How long after surgery can it recur? Wondering how long we have to really keep a close eye on him for any fever or complaint of pain. Sent an email with more details also.

Thanks for your comment. This seems to be acute osteomyelitis which has a good chance of being cured completely. However, as with any infection,it is very hard to guarantee that. This is general statement and not patient specific. Thanks

Hi! I dont know if you know this but QUESTION: Can chronic osteomyelitis come back? And can it come back in another bone than it did the first time? My son (now 13) had chronic osteomyelitis in his hand after surgery. Now 1 1/2 year later he got pain in his hip. (also complaining about his back and left lower rib)

chronic OM after surgery can come back in the same affected bone. It is also a chronic focus of infection that can send bacteria to distant area, however, this is not common

Thank you so much for this video! It cleared up quite a few of my questions even though I worked in the medical Profession myself. My daughter has just gone through a severe hip/pelvis Osteomyelitis! First the diffentialdiagnosis was Osteoblastoma/Ewing Sarcoma which shocked us all! My daughter was in so much excruicating pain that even Fentanyl did not help much. Late at night she had surgery with a fever! The head orthopaedic surgeon drained her abcess and said he had never seen so much puss in his life!
