  • In this advanced styling we design a stunning Olive Bonsai tree (Olea sylvestris). It was collected in Mallorca, Spain, a few years before this video was shot. The work was done by Rafael Torres and Bjorn Bjorholm, who teaches several online courses on our website:
    www.bonsaiempi...
    Topics discussed:
    - Preparing the tree and making sure it is very healthy
    - Defining the age of the tree
    - Cleaning the trunk
    - Creating deadwood
    - Tools used to create deadwood
    - Using fire to enhance the deadwood
    - Design Process and branch selection
    - Wiring and setting branches
    - Cutting back to younger growth
    - Designing the apex
    - Care (including fertilizer, fungus identification, etc)
    - Repotting (at the end of the video)
    - Future steps to take
    Learn to master the art of Bonsai!

    First of all, let me be clear that I have the utmost respect for Rafael en Bjorn as a Bonsai artist and I love there work and videos! But this mighty old Olive creation is an exception to that rule! All that gnarly and ancient-looking deadwood that tell a natural and mighty old Olive story and then those needly straight downwards hanging Spruce like branches...well that is in my humble opinion fare from looking natural, quite the opposite! This remarkable old tree deserves to look like an Olive and not as a needly styled Juniper or Pine tree! We see too much of those as it is in my opinion! Why not style it like it is now but with more gnarly Olive like branches that grow in different directions like leave trees (especially Olives) do in general...only than you can call it (more) natural looking! Now it is styled way too formal looking in comparisons to that stunning deadwood! Hope you guys don't mind me saying all this, but I just had to state my humble opinion?!
    Cheers,
    Hans van Meer.

      I also thought it was odd that he'd cut natural growth and then say it looked more natural that way lol

    I am sure this tree is up from 250 years old ! Not 100 , we have many of them in our mountains here at Crete ! I know one person whom he has many of them for sale , he has many like them in the half size and they are 200 years old !

  • @marciptv9436
    @marciptv9436 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The tree is over 100 years old, why not take one more year and air layered those big branches instead of cutting them off?

  • @andrewtrumbley5462
    @andrewtrumbley5462 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wish they would have made it just slightly less horizontal when they repotted it. It is a beautiful tree though.

    Hello.. question.. My Juniper (I just transferred to a smaller pot) is beginning to turn brown... Am I over or under watering, it's outside..not harsh sunlight.. I spray and water daily.. water drains easily..? HELP.. ty Joe

    • @richardhorger5627
      @richardhorger5627 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe try just watering and hold off on the spraying. I read that only a few species of tree benefit from having their foliage sprayed. Not sure about junipers though.

    @pansepot1490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Is it me or did they make an olive look exactly like a juniper? The tree is beautiful but let’s be honest: all the beauty is due to the work of nature and time. Not sure the style chosen, however excellently executed, suits the species. Personally it makes me cringe.

    • @gutzboy1
      @gutzboy1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You wait a hundred years. Lol They must have known the history of that particular tree or made an educated guess. Even though I couldn't resist joking, you asked a very good question.

  • @gregoryh4601
    @gregoryh4601 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bjorn hate to be a Pain. Why would you not Airlayer the Branch that going away from the Main Trunk to help the Roots and Make a Second Tree. With all that Movement of those Branches you would Have a awesome Second Tree. But to the Boss.

    • @DeadBeatLoser69
      @DeadBeatLoser69 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's very hard to make air layering on such hardwood species especially one that old. Plus, I'm sure he wouldn't want to accidentally spoil the look of the tree.
