Segregated Houston: Black Life Beyond the Hedges

The world outside of the hedges profoundly impacted the state and nature of life at Rice both in its iteration as a whites-only institution and in its later incarnation as a desegregating university. In this first of a series of events on black Houston, two eminent historians of the region explore neighborhood life in the Jim Crow city and the place of sports as a lens through which to examine Houston’s twentieth century transformations.
