Hey, that looks a little like Great Ol' Uncle Ernie's buckskin jock strap. He wore it in the trenches back in WWI for ballistic protection and it must have worked because he went on to have 37 kids. Great Ol' Aunt Bessie should have had a similar device.

It's always fun to experiment with things like that. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but at least it's fun to try. Just like trying the tanning of the burbot skin. The hook is being swallowed correctly. The fish tries to disgorge the hook subsequently and it comes out apex first. The fish is caught trying to retain the fish head. In nature, a fish intentionally swallows its prey head first to avoid getting the rays of the prey’s fins from impaling the throat and stomach tissues. I suggest you’ve proved the fish has the native ability to work out the hook in the reverse direction… especially with the help of some degree of cooperation from the jug on the line. And thanks for sharing your wonderful family!

I’ll give you the same advice I gave my cousin in back creek: tread lightly. Using a wooden fish hook, you’re liable to catch a wooden fish.

I've made hooks with a few thorns, they work ok, too.
Try making hooks with nails. They work well. Catch your baitfish with hooks from staples.

Sorry for my English but my mother-language is dutch. The reason why the fish is taking the hook like that is that he when he swallows he takes always the head first. That is why te hook is turned.

I think it must be that the Ling usually grabs their prey nose first so if you put the fish head on the wooden hook the other way around the hook would end up in the guts. Maybe, give it a try.

Maybe bait the hook with the fish head facing the opposite way…maybe the burbot is swallowing the bait head first?

Burbot wants to swallow its prey head first. If you turn the bait around on the hook the fish is likely to swallow the hook as you intended.

Only difference is the wallet will never hold anything nearly as valuable as the bikini would. (try not to go too dark with that...)

For the size fish you’re catching, I would whittle away much of that mass of the hook. It’s built for halibut, a smaller version would work better for burbot.
I wonder if using something like a balloon for stretching out the fish skin, for drying / curing... would that help? The idea just popped into my head. (haven't watched the whole episode yet, so if that comes up later, my apology)
Yep, you're right, two things I've never done with fish. Never made fish skin leather, never used a wooden hook. I have used a hook made from fencing wire though.

The hook goes in backwards because the fish head baid is easier to swallow NOSE first. If you put the nose of the bat down instead of up, you would likely get a better result.
Fish leather. Never heard of it. If it's see through leather. Everybody's gonna see that you dad is always broke, because he spent all his money on his kids.
