Regarding Galileo, it ‘only’ took the Vatican 359 years to apologize for their actions. Apparently they wanted to make really, really sure that he knew what he was talking about!
Also Columbus did not believe in a flat earth and nor did the rest of the educated westerners of his time. It is a persistent myth that Columbus set out to prove the earth was not flat, but in reality he did nothing of the sort. But the shape and approximate circumference of the earth had been known since the ancient Greeks.
