The most embarrasing situation is when you get humiliated from people whom you treated whith respect and they turn against you and hurt with bad words and behaviour with no reason ! I've had 2 men in my life i was supposed to marry. They both before marriage not only humiliated me but also showed me why my marriage was being delayed. It was Allah who was saving me every time in getting into bad marriages. I couldn't be more thankful to Allah. Till date they speak bad about me and my character . But I pray and am connected to Allah and when I look at them , they just don't even feel like praying or showing kindness to people. No, that's actually wrong,what is done intentionally and repeatedly is a mistake,cuz you didn't learn from the first mistake,the whole point is actually that we are not meant to be flawless,it isn't in our nature to not make any mistake but it's a commandment from God to learn from mistakes,if you don't sin anymore God will remove you and replace others who sin and repent.

All the chronic stress caused me getting Cancer n PTSD. I never felt safe even in childhood. I couldn't marry, have kids, work etc. All I have been kind, hard working, loyal n trustworthy. What about when almost everything said to you by your peers when you are young, easily influenced, and haven’t fully formed your identity, is always hurtful put downs, that even now as an adult it’s hard to overcome because it has been drilled so deeply into you? What if you still can’t figure out how to build self-esteem after your chance was already stolen before you even knew it?
I had the exact same thoughts ! When you are a child and grow up in a chaotic environment, full of violence and insults and toxic people, your brain will not develop correctly and you’ll end up with serious mental health issues that Sometimes people are not even aware of ! They end up having bad coping mechanisms not because they want to destroy themselves or do bad deeds but because they don’t know what is going on and how to deal with it properly…

Towards the end he answers your question. I recommend you watch it. However, i would also advise you to objectively look at your situation and ask yourself the question, "did i really do something wrong". Because a lot of times family (especially parents) think they own you and you should obey them like you are their slave (especially if you are a woman) and they use Islam to manipulate you and make you obey them. This is plain oppression. You are not anyone's slave but Allah cc's, even if they are close family, Islam tells us that no one has the right to control you (not even your parents!) and you are your own free person, free to live your life as you wish (ofcourse while keeping it Halal) and make your own choices. Don't let them manipulate you into thinking you are the bad person and should feel guilty, whereas they are the real bad ones. If you are in such a case, stand your ground, dont even apologise, don't ever feel guilty and live your life however you want. If you truly did something wrong (to them), then ofcourse apologise and follow the path Nouman Ali Khan describes in this khutbah. I wish you well. P.S. Also keep in mind that sometimes family uses "not forgiving" as a tool to punish you, for example for not letting them control you, it's just manipulation and an ego-trip or power-game to show you who's really the boss. Don't fall into that trap. If you can't talk sense into them, just walk away. Know your worth, you are Allah cc's best creation, don't forget that. Don't beat yourself up for people who don't deserve you. Sometimes you will even see that when you do that and stand up for yourself, (after a while) they are "suddenly" willing to forgive you, in a suspiciously miraculous way ;)
I must say forgiveness comes from Allah SWT in the heart of those whom you hurt... just be genuinely apologetic and pray for softening their heart in the matter you hurt them once. I can not forgive some people who hurt me and my life at some point yet I pray to Allah SWT to soften my heart.

What if you still can’t figure out how to build self-esteem after your chance was already stolen before you even knew it?

When you are a child and grow up in a chaotic environment, full of violence and insults and toxic people, your brain will not develop correctly and you’ll end up with serious mental health issues that Sometimes people are not even aware of ! They end up having bad coping mechanisms not because they want to destroy themselves or do bad deeds but because they don’t know what is going on and how to deal with it properly…
I've been a victim of the same. Fight it. Rise above it all. This is coming from a 35 year old. If someone middle aged like me can find the will and trust in Allah to start working hard and trying to pull my own weight, you can too. May Allah make it very very very simple and easy for you. Ameen

Sister, this is a very beautiful khutbah of Nouman Ali Khan about holding grudges, asking for forgiveness and forgiving. Towards the end he answers your question. I recommend you watch it. However, i would also advise you to objectively look at your situation and ask yourself the question, "did i really do something wrong". Because a lot of times family (especially parents) think they own you and you should obey them like you are their slave (especially if you are a woman) and they use Islam to manipulate you and make you obey them. This is plain oppression. You are not anyone's slave but Allah cc's, even if they are close family, Islam tells us that no one has the right to control you (not even your parents!) and you are your own free person, free to live your life as you wish (ofcourse while keeping it Halal) and make your own choices. Don't let them manipulate you into thinking you are the bad person and should feel guilty, whereas they are the real bad ones. If you are in such a case, stand your ground, dont even apologise, don't ever feel guilty and live your life however you want. If you truly did something wrong (to them), then ofcourse apologise and follow the path Nouman Ali Khan describes in this khutbah. I wish you well.
P.S. Also keep in mind that sometimes family uses "not forgiving" as a tool to punish you, for example for not letting them control you, it's just manipulation and an ego-trip or power-game to show you who's really the boss. Don't fall into that trap. If you can't talk sense into them, just walk away. Know your worth, you are Allah cc's best creation, don't forget that. Don't beat yourself up for people who don't deserve you. Sometimes you will even see that when you do that and stand up for yourself, (after a while) they are "suddenly" willing to forgive you, in a suspiciously miraculous way ;)
Just try to be better to them dispute of what they do because that’s what Islam teaches

I must say forgiveness comes from Allah SWT in the heart of those whom you hurt... just be genuinely apologetic and pray for softening their heart in the matter you hurt them once. I can not forgive some people who hurt me and my life at some point yet I pray to Allah SWT to soften my heart.
