When I was in school there was this tournament held in Madurai TVS Nagar grounds in 1986. Srikanth & WV Raman played in that tournament . The six that Raman hit was the biggest in that ground ever ( The ball landed in the street atleast 100 mts away from the ground) I wont be surprised if that is not broken till today. He did not get enough opportunities to play for India
TVS sundaram and Lakshmi. The school grounds where district cricket happens. My under 13 district match was held there. Indian cricketer Vijay Shankar and myself opened the innings for kanchipuram dist. We won the tournament. Golden memory 👌

He used to be a part of Indian team for a long period of time without consistently playing in XI. One time, Gavaskar openly criticised him as a traveller. I played for Madras league second division during his peak. He was a wonderful domestic player; no second thought about it. I saw his double century in a Ranji final against Bengal in Calcutta. Many league matches in Chennai. Amazing hitting. This is the problem with TN players. For some reason, they become nervous and not so driven at the highest level with the notable exceptions of Ashwin, and Venkataraghavan. Even Srikkanth was a pedestrian in his last phase.
B Krish i disagree. In all the home tests Raman was excluded from the XI and included only in SA tests. The flat tracks were enjoyed by Kambli and Manjrekar. Even in flat pitches in England he was excluded. He started with a 83 in his first and how many home tests he played in? I think Vengserkar destroyed the careers of many TN players.
The day Ravi Ashwin retires our proud home record especially those from 2011 to 2020 where we lost only 3 test matches and 1 series will change. We will start losing at home, same will happen with England when Anderson and Broad retires. We will never get another Match winner of his callibre.
Ashwin is so good and humble. He has won Indian world Cup title ,IPL title and many international awards but still trying to improve the Tamilnadu state game to best in the country. Hi Ashwin, i am following TN cricket since 1994 from the days of S Sharath for Ranji titles. Many times TN came to finals and semi finals . It use to fail at crucial stages. But last 2 years TN is struggling even to cross league stages of Ranji trophy. I used to wonder about one player Balachander Anirudh. He was permanent top order batsman for Hyderabad. Since He is from TN origin he shifted to TN, but not given enough chances,he is struggling to find a place in TN ranji side now.He wasted 2 ranji season after shifting to TN.
The reason is TN is more focused on white ball cricket now. They reach reach knock out stage of every white ball tournament let it be Syed Mustaq Ali or Vijay Hazare infact TN has won it 5 times most by any team. Also CSK has had a big impact on young cricketers who prefer white ball game more. Also TNPL which is a white ball platform for upcoming players. For example someone like Natarajan is TN's match winner in the above tournaments but not in red ball cricket.

I am a 63 year old cricket-fanatic, who has played some serious cricket in my days, both in the City League (II Division), Districts (Madurai Dt) and for my University. Yes - there were rumours that only Iyers and Iyengars would play for Madras - but that comment happenned even when P K Belliappa was the Captain (he was not even a Tamil!!); when Micheal Dalvi and Rizvi could not find spots in their own states, they came down and played for TN!!! Bharath Reddy was probably the most popular guy in the team ever, for years together. Not to mention the Tamil Singhs - right from Kripal Sigh, Satwender Sing, his nephew and a whole lot of their family. And so on. It is just a myth that has been propagated like in any other walk of life - in Tamil Nadu. So, dont worry about Caste Politics in TN; if they are there it is only because the entire TN Society has the same Caste Politics. What is today lacking probably the 'can-do' attitude that existed earlier - and a more easily available 'defeatist' attitude. Play your Cricket well; your caste does not matter. Ask the boys coming through the various camps from the districts. Vazhga Tamizhagam.
