I almost didn’t write this cause I don’t want too many people blowing it up, but Sunkissed by Gui.tar is an obscenely underrated album, and frankly it’s the definitive benchmark of this whole micro genre.
Curve and Bowery Electric in the video essay let's fucking goooo! Toni Halliday is such a good lead singer for Curve's entire style. Much love for my Come Clean CD and their beautiful wall of sound.
For me it was the short lived baggy scene and stone roses that started the progression into shoegaze influenced by 60's and rave and electronica of the 90's Brit pop became its own animal resulting from patriotic British originality of the last of British music creatives a stark contrast to today there is literally a different landscape today of British based musicians and creatives trip hop was the last extension of all these subcultures in sound that emerged. The 90's was such a melting pot of experimentation of music and was literally the greatest time for music that influence is still felt today. It's so good and refreshing to see a channel that ventures into this genre it is like a needle in a haystack to find people still interested in this retrospective movement. Im still lost amongst it today. Thanks for the trip back in time. Even the goth subculture was thriving during this time which influenced a lot of bands sound and visual and sonic appeal the scenes and subcultures were somewhat silently appreciative of the music that was coming out at the time.
Candy Claws released an EP called Two Airships/Exploder Falls that mixes shoegaze and electronica and it blew me away. Their music in general is really innovative and unique.
Amazing video as always! I was thinking about the combination of shoegaze and electronica, specially due to new brazilian duo Paira exploring this sound, and it's incredible that now we have a very well curated timeline of this blend with your video. Thank you!!
Great video! I took that picture of Sarah and Mark Seefeel for my interview for KALX Berkeley. They were the loveliest people, as were the opening act of WaqWaq Kingdom.
awesome video, this made me want to relisten to sweet trip's halica again lol the best electronic shoegaze album is the radio dept's lesser matters, imo; the sound is so nostalgic and timeless
Amazing video!!! I resonate with it deeply as a nobody bedroom electronic shoegaze producer; I make Drum & Gaze music, much like what's mentioned in the later part of the video, and it's heavily inspired by many of the artists shown in the video, specifically Coaltar of the Deepers, Ulrich Schrnauss, TURQUOISEDEATH, to name a few, but mainly Supercar, and the original mikgazer album. If I had to name a single electronic shoegaze release that I love, it'd be Futurama by Supercar, it's the one album I would bring with me to a deserted island, it's such an amazing listen.
Great video! Many bands I love, several I need to check out. Curve deserved more attention here - from the start they backed their shoegaze guitars with heavy dance beats. Also, small correction: the reverbs used by even the first shoegaze a bands were digital, though in those days they were bigger rack-mounted units not pedals. (Catalinbread's recent Soft Focus pedal is modeled on the Yamaha reverb used by Slowdive.)
This is true. Even the Cure used Boss digital delay pedals live, from very early on. (And of course what we think of as the "classic" MBV sound uses a digital reverse reverb.)
Great video, thanks ! Rollerskate Skinny's wonderful second album Horsedrawn Wishes was released in 1996. Granted, not really a crossover with electronica, but a late and worthy addition to the shoegaze canon.
Another band exploring a similar sort of territory as Seefeel around the same time were Insides. Their ‘93 album, Euphoria is well worth checking out. And in 2002, a band called Guitar released an album called ‘Sunkissed’ which combines shoegaze and electronica really beautifully
Great video, i would have add the unique album Dynamo by the argentinian band Soda Stereo a really ambitious project that blends shoegaze with latin rock and also a particular use of sampling tecniques. A very powerful spanish shoegaze thing,
really good video! another track i want to point to a potential reader of this comment is global communication's remix of slowdive's 'In Mind' ttiled 'In Mind - Reload Remix (The 147 Take)' which you can find on souvlaki's deluxe edition. It is genuenly one of my absolute favourite electronic tracks, combining slowdive's dreamy instrumentations and vocals with ambient techno beats and synths. Bliss captured in sonic form.
This deepdive was great! Thx. Fun to see Bowery Electric from Darla Records included....I have a suggestion: Darla Records' Bliss Pop Series was by far one of the dreamiest electro/ambient/bliss pop collection of music I ever heard. I recommend doing an entire 30-minute video just on this!?
Shout-out to Silvania, a Peruvian/Spanish band from the early nineties. A prime example of shoegaze meets electronica. Their 1993 release En Cielo De Océano is one of my favorite shoegaze albums. On their following albums (Paisaje III, Delay Tambor, ...) the influence of electronics becomes increasingly greater, until they eventually become a completely experimental electronic band. It's sad that a main band member (Cocó) was the fatal victim of homophobic violence. Curve was a shoegaze-combined electronica band from the start. Worth mentioning is of course SPC.ECO, a shoegaze/electronica group with core duo Dean Garcia (of Curve) and his daughter Rose Berlin. Anyway, great documentary. I have a lot of listening to do!
I was looking for somebody mentioning Silvania before posting, they were amazing! On a slightly less electronic but still Peruvian side of things, worth mentioning the mid-2000s output of Resplandor.
There's a Christian band from the early 90's called Raspberry Jam who kinda sound shoegazy, i had their tape Oceanic as a kid and the first track called Now Watch The Man was my favorite. I looked them up on youtube a few years ago and you can find that album on here, i mention all this to recommend that you check out that first track i think you'll like it🙏
There are 5 Seefeel studio albums, latest released in August this year...... Quique is pronounced 'keek'. Please read some interviews with the bands mentioned before making your videos & please try to put some intonation in your voice & slow down! Its not a race....
The narrator mispronounced "depreciation" - it's not "deprecation", it's dee-pree-shee-ay-shon. This isn't really shoegaze, but I found it interesting: a dance remix of early Cocteau Twins song "Blood Bitch", using stems extracted by AI. It's impressive but I wish the guitars were louder. th-cam.com/video/n0QL8OWEk6M/w-d-xo.html
I had to pause this like fifty times to get the song recs. So deep and thorough - thank you!
Bowery Electric mentioned!!! awesome band with such a unique sound.
Agreed! They are so underrated
this video is insanely good! I'm a long time shoegaze and triphop fan, yet still didn't know many of these things. keep up the good work!
I almost didn’t write this cause I don’t want too many people blowing it up, but Sunkissed by Gui.tar is an obscenely underrated album, and frankly it’s the definitive benchmark of this whole micro genre.
Michael Lueckner in general is an awesome musician
why wouldn't you want more people to listen to good music? get over yourself

Great research and execution! Thank you!
Amazing video!! These two genres are my most favorite of any other style!

Sun Organ spotting!!! Fave Philly shoegaze band rn
Awesome video, i learned a lot. Thank you for the electronic and gazy trip. 🎸🖥️

the monomara EP is awesome!!
Slowdive will b in DC tomorrow night-supr excited!
Yaaaaay have fun!
I love when music can't be quantified or labeled. It really pisses off the record executive types.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Henry! We appreciate your continued support a lot 🩵🩵

my favorite album that blends dance music and shoegaze is the man i love by plastica
Loved it!!
My favorite blend would be the first 2 albums (and all their early eps) that Curve put out.
I totally agree, Curve was awesome. Did you ever get on there old website that had a page you could make different sounds and mixes?
So grateful for your channel. Well researched, thorough, and relaxing exploration of the music I love. I feel like I'm home. ❤
Ps: It's Depreciation not Deprecation 😊
God I love this TH-cam channel so much. Thank you for existing! Such excellent and extensive research as always 💙

Super great video I think Bows Cassidy is a great combo of shoegaze electronic music etc. especially the track DJ.

I thought the band Curve blended shoegaze and elec. better than most. Should do a vid on them.
