I've lived my entire life in Washington, except for 5 years in Oregon. I'm not sure if I've ever even had an ancestor live in Tennessee. But I am so obsessed with geography, I just watched this entire video. I never knew that area had such rich manufacturing history. Excellent presentation!
Recently visited my grandfather in Kentucky from Illinois and stopped at LDL multiple times in the week I was there. The level of ignorance I had about this area will forever be outweighed by the knowledge I gained in my stay. I forever love this place
My dad's people were from Birmingham, KY, an inundated town. They relocated to Gilbertsville, but a lot of the old people never lost their bitterness about it. A gentleman buried near my grandfather has a tombstone that reads, "The TVA has made me a stranger in a strange land." He is buried about 6 miles as the crow flies from Birmingham. Now that's bitter!
I love the history of TVA, and building of dams, electricity, farming methods, etc. In this film and other TVA films, ( on 20:41), those tower power lines bring back memories to me. Those tower power lines were in the backwoods where I used to live, in the citico community of Vonore Tennessee.
Thank you. I remember most of the scenic shots because over half of them are in Chattanooga, Tn. I remember driving past those scenes as a child and it brought back many memories of an earlier time.
20:45 We were enriching uranium for the bombs. There were several plants in "Oak Ridge" (officially called the "Clinton Engineering Works") X-10, K-25, Y-12, etc. My maternal grandfather was a welder there, but he helped to do other things when needed. Several times they'd call my grandmother to say he'd been exposed and would be home late. On one occasion, he helped to bury a truck that was so contaminated it was better to dispose of it. He wound up with cancer, and died in the 70s. I was about 8 years old. Most people working in Oak Ridge did not even know what they were doing until after the bombs were dropped, then they were in shock. They knew they had been doing something majornfor the war effort but, it was hard to digest. There is now a huge ceremonial peace bell in Oak Ridge, donated by Japan.
Damn. It must have been swell to have such a firm grasp on the moral high ground. Chemical runoff? Atomic weapons? DDT? Toxic waste? 57% of what was supposed to be municipal power going to defense? Narry a word!
the tennessee does not flow out of Va or NC. the holston flows out of VA. the french broad, nolichucky and pigeon flow out of NC. the pigeon flows into the french broad near Newport Tn. a mile or so down stream, the nolochucky joins the french broad which is now douglas lake. below douglas dam, the three rivers are known as the french broad. the holston forms cherokee lake near Morristown Tn. a few miles down stream from cherokee dam, the the holston and the french broad join to form the tennessee just before Knoxville Tn. i know this because, living in Morristown all my life, i live within 30 miles of all five rivers and both lakes. they even call this area the five rivers area. sorry, lust a stickler for facts!
and, before someone corrects me, i know there is actually a north and south fork of the holston which join near Kinstport Tn to form the holston proper.
I saw a face that reminds me of today's people. A face of the People's Pharmacy. You guys are great! Body Electric is not? Yea for Greatness in the TVA. BAK
Wow, the so-called maps of the Tennessee river shown in this propaganda film put Muscle Shoals north of Chattanooga. Well, I did say they were propaganda films. Certainly someone could/would digitize the numerous photos and films that show a historically accurate picture of the development of the TVA. So far, I haven't found anything that even comes close. Only the government propaganda pictures and films like this one. Do a little searching and you will see/not see what I have been searching for... If they could do this much propaganda back then, just think how much they are doing now. (heavy sigh) BTW, thanks Travis for posting this propaganda. At least you don't claim it isn't a government propaganda film.
This nothing more than a propaganda film. Everyone who had family here know this is a fluff piece. The government came in and ran everyone out "for their own good".
