    I have the same problems with my Q-See camera . Thank You for posting this video!!! I will try it out when I have the time. I just hope the Q-See development teams see this and fix their camera issues.

    Nice fix G! Really excellent deduction on the problem and fix. Much better than a buck and change for a new camera on an outdoor camera (IP67?). Think you should submit it to them. That SMT photo diode is probably about 2 cents on a reel, but a pain to get the number off of & order it and then steady hand solder an SMT. Definitely a PITA for old shaky hands and trifocals. Your fix should last a while. If I were a betting person I might think the root cause is not the degradation of the photo diode itself but a solder bonding issue being an outdoor device. Weather, temp, pressure changes can create more resistance for the IR diode to come on appropriately, sealed or not. Even where the screws are placed or torqued evenly can create stresses on the board and eventual failures. SMT stuff is subject to all of that over time because of the small contact areas. You can reflow the PWA in the oven if you are careful...there are some YT vids about it. Either way G, Nice fix and share with us. Happy Holidays to you all! ~PJ

      Thanks PJ! IP66, but yes- much better of a price for sure. If I recall correctly, these were about $150 at that time.
      You may be onto something. I did try to look at the connections using my optivisor- but still couldn't really see well. If this one, or another, exhibits the same problem- I'll dig out my microscope for a better look. So far, it's still working fine- though time will tell. Yeah, the size of the components in these things are crazy small.
      I've actually resurrected a couple of laptop motherboards by re-flowing in an oven. The on-board video was on the fritz. It corrected both. The board in my laptop worked great until my daughter spilled a drink on it and I didn't know till I opened it up and poured it out....lol. I've still yet to eBay a replacement over a year later! I wonder if the LED's could stand up to that treatment?
      I have a couple of other cameras were a portion of the LED's aren't lit- one with about a 1/2 and another with 1/3. I didn't think to inspect this one while I had it open to look how they were wired- if I could tell. They may be in series on a 3 or 4 circuits and a some burned out. It doesn't seem to affect their ability to see, so until they're all dead- I'll probably not get around to it...lol. Take care, G.

      I can see the IP66 at that price point for sure. The LED issue may be a problem if they are Pb free as the reflow temps are higher. The specs should tell you if they are RoHs compliant. Nice to know you fixed a laptop that way. Almost did that for my son's old XPS laptop (same issue but the vid was a daughter card) but ended up finding a new board on the bay...that thing is a Juggernaut, but slow to today's stuff.
      As for the LED outages it is likely a similar issue with the resistors/packs rather than the LED's themselves because they are through hole and long lived. Hard to tell how they are wired with a multi-layer board. It's kind of a toss imho whether to just touch them with a good SMT iron and tip or reflow the whole board and because I didn't see the other board or undersides clearly enough. I personally like the Hako Irons and tips if you go that way. For a buck and a half+ a pop I'd definitely be trying something before throwing in the towel. Another alternative is to see if you can get replacement boards for them? Again Great Fix G!

    Isn't this internet thing amazing!? Back in the day , we would take something down to Bob's fix it shop and let him try to figure it out. I remember working in one when I was 10 and we/he fixed all kinds of things. He sure had lots of thick manuals in a bookshelf I was never allowed to touch (fear of me tipping it over on myself pulling a manual out). We also sold all the stuff nobody came by to pick up or want to pay for. Lots of toasters, mixers, vacuumes, lamps, lawn mowers, washing machines, etc, even the old wind up watches sometimes. You name it we fixed it (or tried to). I remember the new realistic hand held radio we fixed and I wanted so bad that the owner wouldn't come get it. Well they did but good old bob (xNavy with one wooden leg) got me a new one for Christmas. After that I got in lots of fights when the other kids called him old peg leg. Back then our prices were astronomical in 1960. $3 an hour for labor, woo hoo!
    Nice fix buddy, I knew you could do it. Now just keep that tubing available for the next one of your massive security system cameras - haha!
    BTW, did you ever get that shotgun (that is wired into your motion sensor) adjusted to only shoot trespassers that you didn't know?

    • @ghostses
      @ghostses  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That it is! Interesting story Mac! You've probably got about 15-20 or so yrs. on me, but I do remember the Bob type shops when I was young. It was probably about the time they were all starting to close up shop. Very cool of him to get you that radio! And certainly someone worth fighting for.
      In high school I was really into high-end car audio. The high end tape decks were 4 -700 bucks which I didn't have. I would get a smoked unit for cheap, or even free from classmates, then take it into my Bob's shop to get it fixed. I think it was about $100 at that time.
      I don't know how long this fix will work, but working is working!
      The shotgun idea had to be scrapped. It was taking out too many friendly's. I was really only trying to target the postman- since all he seems to bring me are bills....lol. Take care Mac, G.
