We're fixin' to get thunderstorms any minute now. It pretty much rained all last week, too. No standing water as of yet, so I'm hoping my property continues to drain well.
I got my potatoes in the ground March 1st they are about a foot tall now and thickly packed with 4 to 5 tops each. Slight frost bite on that last frost but survived, I'm in Hattiesburg MS.

We'll transplant zinnias and sunflowers in the spring just to get a head start. But if we're planting mid to late summer, we'll just direct seed them. And yes, you can plant all those squash varieties in the same area since they're different species.
I got my order of potatoes from you all last week! My husband laughed so hard at my tater plantin' dance 💃🏽!! Alas, it's gonna be about 2-3 more weeks before I can plant them, I think. Last year I didn't get mine planted until 4/3, but I do them in grow bags, so it's less work on my back. More work on my teenage son and husband that have to bring in the dirt for me, but 🤷🏽♀️ 🤫😁. They don't mind eating em when I cook em, though. So there's enough work to go around 😊.
We have about 4" of snow and expecting maybe 14" -17" totally unusual in SE Missouri. Lost the broccoli and other plants even though they were covered in the garden 0 degrees wind chill -11 has been down to -17.
Since it’s already a heavily tilled plot, after the rain you can do a really rough tillage on it so the sun / wind will dry it out quickly....a trick I heard from a Minnesota farmer that deals with wet heavy clays...then you just smooth it out before planting after its dry
We're in south GA. It's cold here today -- in the 40s and will get down to 31 tonight. The really cold weather that is sweeping across the south will push northward by the time it gets this far east.

I've mostly gardened with ornamentals, but I'm getting into and giving vegetables a try. If I have the energy, I actually prefer mudding in my ornamentals, particularly shrubs and trees. Central Georgia has been wet and cold too. It's been a long time since we've had so much rain in winter. I saw a man with a long white beard and wearing a robe walking down the rode yesterday. All these animals were walking behind him. Should I be worried?

I’m in the same boat you are Travis. Here in West central Georgia it looks like AT LEAST 2 weeks before I’ll get my potatoes planted. One quick question for you... I still have broccoli, cabbage, beets, carrots, etc. in the ground. With all of this rain ( literally almost daily as you know) what do you do about fertilizing. I’m hesitant to apply any 20-20-20 and microboost because I’m worried it will just be washed away. I do have some Calcium Nitrate which is granular but still don’t know about it just getting washed out. What are you doing as far as fertilizing? THANKS FOR THE HELP!👍

Seed potatoes are supposed to get dry on the cut face. You’re good. If you have a rear tine tiller they make a little plow point that attaches to your depth stake on the tiller. If you have a friend with a tiller, by the attachment and make a deal. They aren’t expensive.

Ours don't make it to winter. We harvest in May and they'll usually store for 3-4 months on the rack underneath our pole barn.

Much harder to work in the garden if it's muddy. And seed or transplants typically don't care for waterlogged soils.

If they're still under the soil, they might be okay. If there was vegetation above the soil, they would have needed to be covered with more soil.
Enjoy your videos. Are you in zone 8a or 8b? Thanks and keep up the good work.
We're in 8b.
Love the tarping to cut down on moisture but what’s your recommendation for keeping fire ants from taking advantage of your dry plot?
Terro ant bait. Looks like pancake syrup. Works on other ants. Not sure about fire. Never had those.
@@farmergirlofchickens8779 I’ll check it out, I sure hope it will work.
Ants don't like disturbance. If ants to congregate beneath the tarp, one cultivation and they're usually gone.
@@gardeningwithhoss okay thanks
After you plant them you could put the tarp back on until they start popping up out of the ground. Might be a good idea
Yes you could. You'd just need to check them pretty regularly so that you could remove the tarp as soon as vegetation appeared.
