    - I'm sorry for the audio cutting out at the end, for some reason TH-cam has been copyright striking my supposed 'copyright free' music more and more lately.
    - Happy Kidstv is free with Roku, but the last 4 episodes of Monkie Kid season 4 don't work for me. Yeesh

    The most annoying part of this movie is the fact is that not only did it show that BlueSky could’ve seen a resurgence like Sony, but that the studio could’ve demonstrated their craft even further in future works. Who knows where they could’ve gone. I think they always had that talent in them to make something great like with “The Peanuts Movie”.

    Annapurna definitely did Blue Sky justice. I'm so glad this film got a second chance and had so many thought provoking messages. Big metaphors/analogies to fearmongering and propaganda against minorities, using fear to control, the victors writing the history books, use of excessive force, maintaining tradition/the status quo at all costs, gaslighting, and hiding the parts of yourself that aren’t “normal” enough for others’ comfort, among others. It’s pretty spectacular.

    To me, Nimona is proof for two things!
    1) we should not be afraid anymore to make LGBTQ+ animated movies and shows

      #2, it's okay to have complex villains, but yes, it's nice to sometimes recognize what is unredeemable.
      #1, this is what Stevenson does, and it is why we actually need more LGBTQ+ writers of this caliber writing content rather than having it covered by well meaning outsiders who can't help but treat it as something "other."
      When Disney slaps it into a movie with no other LGBTQ+ themes, it feels slapped on and awkward because it feels so tokenish. But Stevenson's work puts it front and center and normalizes it. Everything from Nimona to Lumberjanes to She-Ra makes it Just.Another.Normal.Thing. And that's what we need to shut the phobes up.

    The specific thing I liked absolutely best about Nimona (there are many reasons to love it) is that you see her difference in her eyes first. The way they reflect light is different to human eyes. I just think there is something nice about showing a character's genuine difference to those around her in such a subtle way.

    • @GrahamChapman
      @GrahamChapman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The highlights in the eyes appear to represent different states of mind, with Nimona's shape (which Gloreth shared with her before her parents taught her to fear and hate, and Ballister also gets at the absolutely last shot of the movie) appearing to represent an open, accepting and embracing mind... I like that she is shown with those eyes, and that she figures out Bal and Ambro's relationship without having to be told and also doesn't judge Bal's and Ambro's relationship beyond the fact that arm-chopping is not a love-language... The T community has always been there to support of the LGB communities, and I just think it's tragic that some LGB people are trying to repay Trans people by attempting to saw them off the LGBT+ umbrella and struggle, arguing that Trans people are holding them back... As far as I'm concerned, there is no LGB without the T... United we stand. Divided we'll fall.

  • @345635356
    @345635356 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The more subtle part of the commentary that I loved is that Balister and Ambrosius' relationship in the world is treated as ok because they are both knights in service of the realm but starts getting questioned a little when Balister is thought to be a villain, as if difference is only ok if its in service of targeting a greater "weird" (Nimona) and as soon as she's not the focus the realms distrust will fall onto other, accepted parts of society, such as commoners or gay people.
    Its an aspect of how these dynamics work that doesn't get discussed enough, and we see it a lot lately.

    I'm a trans guy living in Florida so seeing a movie who's themes are directly about the demonization of the other, and fighting against that, that really hit hard.
    The humor also just felt really good, I've never had a movie make me laugh and cry so much
    I really enjoyed the art style and the animation, it just felt so fun and nice to look at

    saw some post on tumblr saying that ambrocious and ballister's relationship would be more frowned upon due to classist reasons rather than due to be a homosexual couple, even before the whole queen killing thing ballister clearly wasnt seen in a good light by high society and other knights due to being a commoner and well ambrocious is the direct descendant of the kingdom greatest hero, one could say he is basically unofficial royalty so a lot of people would have most likely been against the idea of them being a couple (notice how for most of the movie most of their affective interactions are either subtle when in public or more open in empty areas vs at the end of the movie where they openly kiss and walk around holding hands in public)

I genuinely enjoyed the movie because I’m a sucker for novelty, animation, and giant Kaiju (huge Godzilla fan). But I can look past the sprinkles and see the dough. The worst part was definitely the marketing, and Chelsea as a villain was kinda ruined by it.

Or maybe I'm just sappy and wished Chelsea and Ruby could have ended the story as friends

    I'll be completely honest with you: When Ballister had his hand on Nimona's heart in her kaiju form after she was about to off herself, and tells her "I see you, Nimona... and you're not alone" that was the moment I legit began sobbing. I would kill again and again to be told that by the people who once saw me as "wrong," people that I used to trust. It's different than the people who support you from the beginning, it's the hope that those people that hurt you can also change. I know I'd probably be asking for too much there, but I can still dream.

    We need more of these character. This movie some serious interesting world building. Loved the soundtrack, loved the action, and the story was pretty solid especially with its message. Honestly, my only complaint was the “twist villain” as it’s so easy figure out who framed Ballister. I do feel like they could’ve handled them better, but they never really hurt the film. It was just a bit obvious in my opinion.

    Rarely have i watched a movie that brought me up and down so hard. I did not expect it to be so good. I did almost send it to the ignore yard. Looked like a cash grab, my goodness was i wrong.
    Watching Nimona, there was so much relateabillity hidden inside. So many things i could put myself into. I have been there, not with the gold statue, but with most of it and it hit hard. I had to recenter myself afterward. Did not prevent me from watching it 4, later a fifth time. So many little details were hidden in plain sight. I loved it, i love everyone talking about it.
    It is a very short movie, which makes it exceptional - and i was smitten to the core to realize, i won't be seeing more of them afterwards. Let's watch it a 6th time i guess.

    • @NobodyC13
      @NobodyC13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It managed to get away with some of the original's trademark black comedy and unsettling ideas, like the one gremlin stuck in the wretched existence of concious sludge in a jar (after the villain's botched consumption of it), or the body horror of the gremlins cutting off the villain's hand and magically rendering the other a fingerless stub. And while some are mixed on the children's adventure fantasy tone compared to the movies' comedy horror, I actually think it's a logical idea given the mogwai and gremlins were inspired by old school fairies (the kind that go bump in the night that would gladly see you suffer out of disproportionate retribution or amusement), which the show reinforces that idea. I also appreciate the show for being probably the first in years since Jackie Chan Adventures that's a mainstream adventure fantasy inspired heavily by Chinese folklore and mythology (Avatar the Last Airbender is more of an amalgamation of Asian mythologies, but never directly references things like a Jiangshi or Nuwa).
