    Great tutorial! I can't stress enough to everybody how important it is to know how to swing. You can't play along to a shuffle without it.

    Every body...this reminds me of the time, a great friend of mine from Peru ( no names ) played congas on the tune "Killer Joe" in a band I was sitting in with. They played the tune as a swing and he played straight 8ths as like a Cha Cha Cha against the swing and was oblivious how to fit in since he was not a jazz/ swng player at all ! lol. Imagine the odd mixture there !

      Absolutely!!! Mr Barretto was the go to guy for a lot of Jazz records. Producers used to call the swing tumbao “ a Barretto.”
      Was he the originator of the swing tumbao or were there earlier players like Chano Pozo when he was working with The Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra who did this kind of feel? Anybody know?

    Seems simple enough, but it still surprises me that many Salsa congueros still don't "get" this swing feel.

    Great video! I'm thinking about buying my self my first pair of congas! Any recommendations?

    • @BrotherKaban
      @BrotherKaban 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AwesomeThunder16 don’t buy cheap little sets, they don’t have full conga sound. The middle line models are very good and you can upgrade skins to take them to the next level from Meinl (Marathon or Luis Conte), LP (LP Classic II, Uptown or Matador). Sometimes you can get a used set in great shape from Guitar Center’s website used section.

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree with Kaban’s statement... but it really depends on your budget...

    Eric. Thank you for your careful and fun instruction!
    Question: what is the black “wedding ring” you wear? I thought wearing a ring while playing can damage the heads? Or does it provide some drum purpose instead? Thanks!

    • @APercussionLife
      @APercussionLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gerry Brimacombe Thanks Gary! So my ring is an “Athletic Ring”... so it’s made out of rubber which causes no damage to the head or my fingers... so I’m able to represent with no issues in my playing.

    Is there any way you could throw some kind of music behind this? Even if you were to sing something or have a buddy lay down some rhythm guitar, it would help to hear these rhythms against some music or melody. I know there are concerns about legal issues. Thanks!
