Hey Hey, was from about 1987-1997 the biggest variety show on Australian tv so any big name who was in Melbourne would appear to promote a movie or show theres a very famous clip with Tom Jones and John Farnham singing together which is worth a look.

I never watched Hey Hey much as a kid but I remember my grandparents watching it; my favourite was Ossie ostrich even though he didn't do too much. I like Red Symons on the show as well he has his own humour.
I think you would find many people of the American entertainment industry of the day; if they visited Australia; that they would get a guernsey on this show.

I remember this ! It was always funny watching overseas guests trying to keep a grip on what's going on around them.... They always got points for effort in my book. Particularly if Dickie Knee popped up..

Just wait until you discover, and try to understand Dicky Knee from HHIS. The original co host was a zany Queensland girl called Jackie McDonald. Her and the Host, Darryl used to exchange double entaunt (meaning) jokes while doing a kids show, it was originally on Sat mornings, only in Melbourne, before it went nationwide on Sat evenings. Probably more adults watched than kiddies. Cheers

Pretty sure it was national in the mornings in late 70s and into the 80s (may have been Melb only in the early 70s) before it switched to the evenings.

Hey Hey used to be a kids show on Saturday mornings. After a while, the producers realised that adults were watching it as well, so they rewrote them for Saturday nights. That’s why it has Ozzy the Ostrich, Dicky Knee and other kid style comedy. They kept the essence of it but changed the jokes. 😂😍

Hi Rita. It's not that female comedians were not that popular, it's that there wasn't many around back then. Love your work.😊

Overseas artists like musos and comics used to ask their agents if they could get on Hey Hey. It was that popular and fun to be a part of, many requests were sent in and the legend of the show became bigger.
The female comics of the day never got into man bashing, I hate men type of content to get their laughs. Australia had many good female comics in the 80s and 90s.

One of the great things about Hey Hey is that it wasn’t scripted. They had a run sheet, that had a list of what segment was after which, and what guests were going where, but otherwise it was live and unrehearsed. Many of the regular cast would chip in comments unrehearsed when they thought of a gag. One of the cast never appeared on screen but he lived in the control room with a zillion sound effects. There was a character called Dickie Knee who consisted of the back of a head on a stick. When the guy who made Dickies voice had a smart idea for a remark he’d just open his mic and say it. The floor techno responsible for operating Dickie had to dive to the floor and put the head up into shot, not knowing what was coming up or how long it was going to be The who,e show was riotously chaotic Many guests specially musicians from overseas loved the show because it was live to air and wisecracks were coming from all over the place. If you can find one somewhere you should try to find a whole show to watch. It’s an example of what great tv entertainment we had before reality tv ruined it all

Dickie Knee (John Blackman) interacting with Daryl (Somers) was a weekly 'institution' ... but often, the real star was Ozzie (Oswald Q) Ostrich (Ernie Carroll, RIP). Plucka Duck was a ratbag but funny as a lot of the time.. and be sure to check out 'Red Faces' - an often woefully bad but funny 'talent show' segment in the program that was the starting point for some very popular, professional musicians, comedians, etc.

Hey hey started out as a kids show on Saturday mornings and basically it became an ‘adult’ show because it’s original demographic also became adults. Pretty much every famous person who was touring Australia would appear on this show. Meatloaf was probably the worst American to appear (he acted like an obnoxious American) and they took the piss out of him. Harry connick jnr got upset when a white comedy act blackened their faces to do a minstrel show on red faces. Lots of great memories of that show.

beside of rita rudner as one of australia's adopted favourite american comedienn.... american magician/comedian "the amazing jonathan" was so much loved by the aussies as his shows were belly aching sold out for years in the 90s to early 2000s, as his popularity in australia made him as one of most successful act in vegas, but he kept returning to australia year after year (he sadly developed a heart muscle problem that made it hard for him to keep coming back to aus, and died in 2022 from his ailment)..... should do a reaction to one of his many "hey hey" appearances.... example this.... th-cam.com/video/dm7d7Zdfjdc/w-d-xo.html
