    So we had a DI AR fail just above 800 rounds, and we had a good AK 47 fail just above 800 rounds, and now we have a piston AR failing just after 800 rounds. Of course all 3 guns failed for different reasons, and the DI AR was the worse failure of the three, but at about the same time all three weapons would have been out of the fight. I guess in the end it doesn't matter all that much what you pick, as long as it's a decent rifle, your odds are pretty good . Great video as always.

    In my opinion that was probably the best video for 3 reasons.
    1. Steel case ammo works fine with no issues, even under full auto.
    2. As you said, now manufacturers can resolve any issues with products.
    3. Simply awesome to watch a gas piston system run like a champ.

    So if you ran a thick barrel on a Di you would probably get over 1000.
    On the old test, it wasn't the gas system that failed, it was the skinny barrel.

    Watching the AK, AR gas-impingement, AR piston meltdown test it was interesting that all three rifles seem to fail around the 8 minute mark and roughly similar round counts. You could make a career testing different components in each rifle to improve the results (i.e. the barrel mentioned in this video). Can't wait for the next video in this series.

      Daniel Jones The WASR was garbage... They did another meltdown with a VEPR AK and it lasted 900+ rounds.
      The AK-74 shoots the 5.45x39 round, which is basically Russia's version of the .223/5.56x45 NATO used in ARs. I think an AK-74 has the potential to last longer than the AKM and AR, while possibly giving the Glock's 1,200 rd count a challenge.

      THIS

    • @NavySturmGewehr
      @NavySturmGewehr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Nam Nguyen I believe you are absolutely correct.
      Either through heat soaking into the bolt, incorrect heat treating, or insufficient material, the material was soft enough to mushroom. As the bolt carrier started to mushroom there likely would have been more space between the bolt carrier and the piston, adding to the pistons momentum before striking the bolt carrier. Due to the small amount of material, the bolt carrier mushroomed towards the top, moving the divot upwards. The piston would be forced to the center of the divot by the impact, bending the piston rod.
      From a design standpoint this is a direct advantage to the internal short stroke piston of the DI system, which has the piston concentric to the boltcarrier. The force can only act on the bolt carrier in one direction.

    • @NavySturmGewehr
      @NavySturmGewehr 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      mastalee If the mushroomed burrs had been removed, yes the rifle probably would have continued to function for a while. I imagine that the piston is captured for the most part, so it would take the piston actually bending enough to bind up in its normal path. This probably wouldn't have happened, it's more likely it would continue to mushroom over the bolt carrier at an accelerated rate until the bolt carrier bound up again against the charging handle.

    Cool vid, guys. It takes guts to run a gun at over 1,000 degrees and I'm glad that AR didn't turn into a grenade on you. I used to be a huge piston fan and now most of my ARs, except two, are DGI. My SR-556 has gone over 1,500 rounds without cleaning or jamming, but I broke down and gave it a thorough cleaning. I notice that DGI ARs can run into issues at 400-500 rounds or so without cleaning, depending on the components being used. Nickel-boron BCGs work well for me, and I'm a fan of stainless steel barrels.

    Eric says: "And they say, oh well, it's a piston AR you never have to clean it or anything like that. Yeah, they can go a little longer without being cleaned, sure they provide a little bit more reliable operation under adverse conditions. You'll get a little bit more longevity in terms of continued use in the field without maintenance but at the core, it's still the same gun."
    Let's make it simple -
    - A little longer without being cleaned (bullshit Eric, they can go a lot longer).
    - A little bit more reliable operation under adverse conditions.
    - A little bit more longevity in terms of continued use in the field without maintenance.
    Geezus…I'm sold. And, guess who owns a POF 416 Edge? I think your round count was 2,737? If my math is correct and it is, that's 3-times the round-count of a DI. I popped an ACOG TA01NSN on that POF 416. Is it heavier? Yes, but when all the CLP is gone and there's no gasoline and/or diesel fuel to siphon, you'll be sorry. There aren't any ultrasonic cleaners to dunk your BCG into out the field. Maybe you can rob or swap parts with Gas-Tube-Johnny to make your DI serviceable?

    you guys should do a video about how much pressure/power is lost from behind the bullet when a portion of the gas goes through the gas system as opposed to if there was no redirection in the gas flow. maybe use an adjustable gas block to close off the system for a couple rounds, or compare it next to a bolt action of the same barrel length and caliber. you know.. for science or whatever.

    That's pathetic. I expected a lot more from LMT, they're suppose to be a "premium" brand in the AR-15 market. That bolt carrier obviously wasn't heat treated properly (if at all) the deformation of the key clearly shows that. I've have a love/hate relationship with LMT ever since they patented their monolithic upper receiver. Mega Arms was the first or one of the first companies to offer a true monolithic upper, and they had the best mono upper on the market at the time. After the LMT patent anyone manufacturing a mono upper had to pull them from the market which pissed me off. Now LMT is selling garbage like this? Seriously LMT handle your shit!

    Post script- an M16 magazine loaded with 18/20 weighs 11 ounces each. 40 mags = 760 rounds = 27 1/2 pounds, or 3.3 gallons of water. In terms of kit, 20 round magazines are shorter and straight making a more compact package, with less volume; also, a lower profile in prone position, or traveling in wait-a-minute brush. It's easier to put 3 20 round mags in your pocket (18+54=72) than two 28/30 (28+56=84). That's only 12 less It isn't just the total number available, but time spent into moving to the point of contact while maintaining situational awareness; if you drop a reload, it's better to get a new one off your person without taking eyes off the threat.

    I don't think it was an issue with the piston, more so the push-rod bending. I have an MR556 and the piston is contained in the gas block and the operating rod is what acts on the bolt carrier. Not sure if that upper was designed for full auto operation, as stated by the author the likelihood of using a rifle in that manner are pretty much a non-starter.

    A very decent approach to know the meltdown point of a Fire Arm, but there is no ending to these episodes bec. when the barrier is broken, another comes in the way. Improving the fire arm will increase the amount of ammo absorption but it will "ultimately" fail on another point. In practical, such a catastrophic situation never comes, either a person dies or the fire arm. And you are the person imho, who has fired record rounds so far in a man's life. Great work.

    Interesting. So it looks like the DI and the Piston meltdown experiments went just about the same amount of rounds before the rifles couldn't fire any longer. So much for the superiority of the piston guns! I'll keep shooting my Colt M4 in its original DI configuration. Accuracy is better than a piston gun and as long as I have a small bottle of lube with me, I should be able to shoot as much as I want without any problems. Eric, your published experiments are outstanding! The proof is truly in the pudding, Sir, and you've served that pudding up for all to taste! Much appreciated!!!
