How Beavers Evolved to Build Dams

  • Beavers build dams to help create a deep pond of quiet water, where they then build their home or lodge. A beaver dam is a marvel of engineering that changes the surrounding landscape. But how did this behaviour evolve? And what were the selective pressures that led to the evolution of dam building?

    Years ago I spent a summer in a cottage on it's own large lake up in Northern Ontario. There was a beaver dam at one end with a pretty big lodge nearby inhabited by one enormous beaver. I spent the first days paddling around in an old wooden canoe and trying to get close to the beaver, who didn't like that at all. Lots of slapping of the water with the tail if I got too near. Then one morning I got up and walked down to the edge of the lake and saw that the canoe, which I had pulled up onto the gravelly shore, had an almost perfectly circular hole gnawed out of the bottom.

    Beavers will sometimes dig channels out from the pond giving safe ways to reach more trees. Their predators can't swim very well.

    2:23 Well, maybe there are more than two. Back in 1946 Canadians sent 10 beaver couples for a fauna enrichment experiment to Tierra del Fuego and they have been wreaking havoc ever since and at some point they are going to diverge from Castor Canadensis, if that hasn't already happened considering how we haven't been able to exterminate the pests.
    P.s.: If you ever feel like helping nature and get yourself a nice pelt at the same time, hop on up to Tierra del Fuego and get those *dammed* beavers.

    Only a couple of video by this author, but very impressive, of high quality in images & contents. That indicates considerable amount of time for research. Several notches higher than others.
    Here's a thing to be addressed in future: before dam-constructing behavior was established, semi-aquatic lifestyle preceded. That may provide them with protection to a large extent. Then, what was the construction of dam for, or how did it have to occur, if it was the case? A few steps more to be filled. This series is always very successful in suggesting further thinking. Inspiring!

    How did giant beavers help in prehistoric times. I bet they had some huge dams if there were beavers the size of bears. I bet there were some huge swampland areas from them too. I’ve been trying to find stuff on the prehistoric beavers but not finding much

    • @Skeif13

      the giant beavers didn't build dams and lost their appetite for woody plants, which might be why they went extinct since they weren't able to have food stored in a winter-proof bunker

    Is climate change responsible for every unexplained evolutional twist?

    • @secularidiot9052
      @secularidiot9052 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any change in the environment is an answer for changes in evolution, as evolution is ultimately dependent on how well an organism is able to fit into their environment. Shifting climates is one of the biggest influences on evolution, so it's a plausible explanation, especially since the beavers lived through an ice age, which would've introduced a plethora of evolutionary pressures.

    I'm sorry, but the idea that a program such as modern beavers run came into being purely by accident is impossible for me to believe. I spent many years trying to make computers do things, and one thing I learned early on is that there is no such thing as a program that almost works. You need the whole thing at once. No evolutionary approximations along the way.

    For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
    16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
    20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:14-21
