ALL I want to do is steam FROM MY PHONE (hi-res FLAC, or lossless Apple) to something I can connect to my vintage receiver. Isn't there something simpler than this WiiM? Like a Bluetooth adapter but with WiFi than can handle hi-res? I'm confused about this need for STREAMERS with apps etc. PLEASE solve my mystery!
A device like the WiiM really is the simplest solution. You get much more complex when you start tying to integrate a mobile device as a streaming source in a vintage set up.
Great video. I am definitely interested in the Wiim pro plus after watching this video. I noticed you only used RCA cables to connect it to your amp or receiver. Both my amp and receiver are old school. I have a Marantz 1060 and Onkyo TX8511. Is there any different way I need to know to connect it? I do have a newer type cd player with digital optical and coaxial connections. To connect the cd player would I just use either one of these? I am thinking the coaxial would work the best. Many thanks Jiles, you have helped me through HT(external amplification) and now with streaming and understanding DAC's. I have found your videos informative and easy to understand, again, many thanks.....cheers Paul.
Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. One question: I have a vintage hi-fi setup. I have been looking at getting a WiiM as a streamer and running it through the aux port on my receiver. This is the only way I plan to use this device. Would the integrated DAC in the pro plus make a big difference in sound quality, or could I get by with a mini? I've never used a DAC before, so I'm not exactly sure how it might improve things.
Hi, Nice review. I have a particular problem I need a solution for, and I’m not sure if this unit would resolve it. I have four B&O active speakers that I would like to continue to use, the original CD deck gave up years ago and up until recently I have been using two Sonos connect units, I want out of Sonos as it drives me mad for a hundred reasons. Would this unit enable we to activate the B&O speakers and control volume. Thanks Nick ( not very tec minded)

My streaming (such as it is) is Apple Music on my Mac, through an Apple AirPort Express and via toslink to my audiolab 6000a. What would the Wiim Pro give me the the AirPort Express doesn't?
I think you are limited to 16/44 output on that device. So you can’t do high res streaming. And you have to use you Mac as the source. It’s the real streamer. The airport just is part of getting the streamed music to your audio lab. With something like the WiiM all you need is it, the internet (or your own server) and your HIFI gear.
Hi Late to this review, but quick question => I want to play Apple music lossless. How can I do that with this device? Can it be with BT or need a direct connection?

My LG OLED55C9AUA TV is notorious for optical signal drops. My current SMSL D100 DAC allows for internal clock adjustments to compensate for this (DPLL). Will this WiiM Pro Plus DAC handle my television optical correctly?
Great Video. What I can't seem to find any videos on is how to share my own (FLAC) files to the WiiM Pro Plus. I don't want to spend the money for the NAS if possible or dedicate a laptop or PC. I don't want to use BlueTooth either. It doesn't seem to be a good solution to put FLAC Files on Phones either. Is there an easy way to share these and play on my receiver or is a NAS the only good solution. Appreciate thoughts.

great vid! Just got my wiim pro yesterday and they released the pro plus one day later ?! I have it connected directly to a class D amp no external DAC. would it be worthy to upgrade? I can still return the pro
Yes, either go pro plus or external DAC on the pro.
Just get an SMSL SU-1.
Both of the above options are great suggestions. If you want an all-in-one, get the Pro Plus, but for maximum SQ… you may find the SU-1 is still a better DAC than what will be included here.
I use mine SMSL U8,It's sound fine

You would use the Wiim app or something like Roon.

Thank you for your review. Very helpful! Is it a good match with active speaker? like Edifier A200?
Edifier Airpulse A200? Would you recommend any active speskers to match with this WiiM?
Sure, as long as the speaker will take optical, coax or RCA in.
Great video Jiles 👍. I am currently using Macbook Pro connected to SMSL SU-1 DAC to listen to apple music, do you have any idea if replacing this set up with Wiim Pro Plus will yield better result? Since Wiim Pro Plus also does not have apple music as native app, only through apple play, the music is not pure lossless, if I am not mistaken.
I doubt it would yield a better result in your situation.
@@JilesMcCoy gotcha, thanx for the prompt reply 👍
Great review. You have a very good, clear delivery.
Can you PLEASE help me with something.
I was all set to purchase an SMSL SU 1 DAC but after seeing this video I could have a streamer and a DAC with an AKM chip all in one. Thanks again for a great video. 👍🏼
I would try this DAC before buying another one.

I stream Apple Music lossless over AirPlay from my iPhone to my Denon AVR-X3700H in two channel pure direct mode , I wonder if streaming through this would improve sound quality ???🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for watching!
Many thanks Jiles, you have helped me through HT(external amplification) and now with streaming and understanding DAC's. I have found your videos informative and easy to understand, again, many thanks.....cheers Paul.
Glad to help!
If you plan to use the integrated DAC I would go with the pro plus for sure. It does represent an audible difference, albeit slight.
@@JilesMcCoy how do you use the DAC? Do you just hook the WiiM rca out into the aux on the receiver? Or is there more to it?
If you use the integrated DAC you simply take the RCA out from the WiiM and plug into the RCA in on your preamp or amp.@@Ryan-vw6et
Its like hooking up a CD player or a tape deck.
Which speakers do you have? What inputs do they have?
@@JilesMcCoy Hi, Thankyou for the response , I have checked out the speakers and can't find any reference numbers. I do have photos but can't see how to attach them. I'll send a link to them if thats okay.
Would I notice any different streaming music through this compared to listening through a Fire Cube with Amazon Music?
I’ve never used a cube before.
If you are in your late 60s or 70s don’t expect any audible differences, people talk about soundstage differences in dac’s, I’m in my 70’s my elac ub5’s do a total disappearing act
Speaker placement makes a greater difference then any dac, I own a meridian dac it doesn’t sound any better then the smsl su1, then again I’m 72 but age doesn’t change imaging or soundstage
Thanks for the comment!
If you connect with Bluetooth the quality will be determined by the Bluetooth connection.
DACs and streamers? Ive never had a reason to buy one so i feel like im missing something? I use my firecube to stream amazon. Is that not ok? It just plugs into my processor.
Its a streamer too... so you are already there!
My LG OLED55C9AUA TV is notorious for optical signal drops. My current SMSL D100 DAC allows for internal clock adjustments to compensate for this (DPLL).
Will this WiiM Pro Plus DAC handle my television optical correctly?
Good question. It worked with all the items I used but I don’t have a LG TV.
Do you have to connect it to your Wi-Fi or not What are the options for your phone
I use wifi yes. It can take audio from Bluetooth though.
@@JilesMcCoy can you stream high res from your phone to the streamer without Wi-Fi?

Great Video. What I can't seem to find any videos on is how to share my own (FLAC) files to the WiiM Pro Plus. I don't want to spend the money for the NAS if possible or dedicate a laptop or PC. I don't want to use BlueTooth either. It doesn't seem to be a good solution to put FLAC Files on Phones either. Is there an easy way to share these and play on my receiver or is a NAS the only good solution. Appreciate thoughts.
You have to get it over the network somehow. I use Roon.
Thank you. Going to check it out now.. R
You mentioned that you compare the internal dac to external dacs. What external dacs did you use for comparison ?
SMSL, Gesheli, Schiit, Topping - Options in the price range compatible with this streamer.
@@JilesMcCoy thanks for sharing
The internal DAC is great. It’s now my endgame DAC. It’s that good.
I wanted to send vinyl TO Chromecast devices - no go. It will send an analog signal to all of the other services such as Bluetooth and Airplay, but not to Chromecast devices. That's the one thing i wanted to do.
You want to play a record player in another room maybe?
@@JilesMcCoy yes. I was trying to help someone do that and we tried it with Chromecast devices but it was not possible. It seems that it might have been possible with Airplay or a second WiiM product, but we didn't have the hardware to try that.
Is this also a preamp? I was thinking whether I could pair this with the FOSI Audio V3 but could I just pair it with a power amp? More specifically, if I purchased this, could the remote control the volume on both my active subwoofer and passive speakers?
Hi, it is a preamp if you want it to be. The remote controls the Wiim box.
Can i use this to turn my stereo amp on and off? If I'm too lazy to get up but i have my phone in my pocket? I have a rotel A11 tribute.
I don't know the capability of an A11. Does it have 12 v trigger?
How does by pass my dac in receiver Yamaha also what kind of dac is inside
If you use digital out on your preamp that will bypass the DAC in the preamp.
Thank you for this. Sorry for a newb question, but if I had an amp (with no digital connections, such as the IO) and wanted to connect a CD transport, could this be used as a serviceable DAC? Cheers.
Absolutely. That is the reason you buy the pro plus version… becuase you want to use its DAC.
I have the Wiim mini, and have to reconnect it almost every day. It’s very frustrating. I’m wondering if the newer unit would be more stabile
What do you mean by reconnect? For me both the pro and pro plus are always ready to play. I never do anything other than push play.
Yeah. It cannot find the player at all, and I need to set it up as a new device every time I use it.
@@t3dewys I'd call support for that issue.
@@t3dewys I have mine fail to show up as an Airplay device on occasion, I just remove the power for a minute and reset it. It’s not ideal, but it really only happens maybe once a week.
That's not normal. Sounds like a Wi-Fi issue or a glitch with the unit itself. Is it getting a decent signal from your router? Have you tried a factory reset?
Many of us would use the wiim exclusively to stream a streaming service like amazon music, spootify etc into an old amp would one notice any difference in sound between the wiim pro and the wiim pro plus in this context?
Yes, the output stage is much better on the pro plus.
@@JilesMcCoyI want to use its rca output directly to my old Yamaha amp. I listened to a guy from another you tube channel who said that "pro" rca output was bad...so I decided not to buy it. If you watch mu channel you ll see how excellent sound my ps3 spotify.
Great video! Is it possible for the Pro Plus to play through multiple zones in my AVR? Could I send signals through SPDIF and RCA line outs simultaneously? The WiiM Pro doesn't do it unfortunately.
You can always use a Y cable on the RCA outs.
Hi! If I use the Wiim Pro analog inputs just to send the the Signal throught the analog output, would it cause any degradation in the Signal? Would it be converted to digital? The use of this connection for me would be useful to have Wiim as a sort of a receiver, through which I could select different inputs. Thank you very much for your attention.
If you use the analog outputs (RCA) that will be an analog signal. You need to use the digital out (fiber for example) for a digital signal.
When you say the pro plus doesn’t have room feature what exactly does that mean?
It means that still have to get that approved from Roon. Not sure on the current status.
Thanks for the informative video. I ordered the Wiim Pro Plus from Amazon. I have two different stereos in my house in two different listening locations. I'm considering ordering a second Wiim for the second location. I do have one DAC as well. Should I order the regular Wiim Pro for the second location since I have one DAC already? Also, is it true I can link the Pro's to have the same music playing in both locations? We like to entertain and I'd love to have the music sinked in both rooms. Lastly, I'm currently using Apple Music for my digital music. I'm assuming the Wiim will be compatible with Apple Music. Thanks in advance for your answers.
If you have a DAC then get the pro. Yes, you can party mode. I do t use Apple Music so I don’t know much about it. I am a Qobuz guy. Enjoy!
I’m in a similar situation. I’m going to buy 2 Wiim Pro Plus units because both external DACs that I own for each room is old from years ago and the the Wiim’s internal DAC is more up to date
I have some old iPods 2nd and 3rd generation, can I connect them to the pro plus
I've never tried, but bluetooth is bluetooth right?
Any talk of a new WiiM Mini Plus?
Nothing that I have heard of. If I had to guess a WiiM Ultra or similar would be next. With additional connectivity features. Just a guess though.
