BMW Scrambler Full Timelapse Build (R80RT)

  • I purchased this 1983 BMW R80RT off of craigslist in pretty decent shape. It ran perfect mechanically other than a small exhaust leak where the header pipe had rusted through. Cosmetically it was not in the best shape. It had been repainted atleast 3 times from what I could tell and there was red overspray on every inch of the bike. Most of the original panels were cracked, broken, or repaired. The footage is a compilation of all the work I did to breathe new life into this machine and convert it into a scrambler/bobber. Thanks for watching! If you want to see more details about the build head over to my instagram @baycityrestorations

    Mate, love the bike. Great build. Especially like that it looks like your family was involved in the build, got a cx500 in the garage at the moment that my brother and I are about to start tearing down so we can completely rebuild it. First bike my brother and I will do..... hopefully one of many, he doesnt ride and has never shown interest in bikes. But with the virus going round and me having a pretty sever back injury I need help to do this now, and he jumped at the opportunity.
    But thanks again, when I'm bed ridden with pain I watch you tube builds and yours is one of my faves, inspires me to keep going with it. Thanks, look forward to seeing more builds!!!

    So, I freaking love the transformation of the bike. I grew up on the back of my Pop's BMW's He passed away last month and left his entire estate to me which included 6 BMW M/C's a Kawasaki a Goldwing G1 1200 and a Moto Guzzi. All of them have utility sidecars. He was single and 77 so the bikes were a bit heavy for him to manhandle, the
    sidecars evened things out for him.
    I've made my living as a Welder/Fabricator I think I'm going to retire and start building bikes like yours with custom handmade sidecars for touring. I think I have a nice start...

      @@joaoxufre9296 yeah? Thank you for your input, seriously! They all are 1980's- early 90's in beautiful condition. The utility sidecars are cheap aluminum diamond plate. I think brings down the value and beauty of the bike. Your opinion does make me think.

    I appreciate the guys artistic direction and the result is something to be proud of. At the same time we lose another classic BMW in the process. These days a lot of customizers strive for a situation where the car or bike can be put back to original condition and thereby preserve the future value. Having said that, I'm sure this dude thought of that and was willing to lose future value to have enjoyment in the present.

    • @andrewbaker8342
      @andrewbaker8342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had this situation with my 100 all original down to the bolts 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe sedan. It sucked. Slow, unstable, unable to just drive with modern traffic. I didn't care what so ever about future value in my case because I never ever plan on selling it as it was my father in laws car that was passed down to me. So present enjoyment was the name of the game. It's a hard decision sometimes.

      I work for a BMW vintage motorcycle shop on Los Angeles and I spent 3 days hunting down shocks like these for a guy who wanted a custom job on his bike. What I found, talking to the company that makes the shocks, is that they're the shocks made for quads/ATVs. Ordered them and they worked perfectly. I hope that helps in your search.

    beautifull, only thing it's missing are the stripes on the engine.. the aluminum part needs to be same color as the wheels

    • @EricRShelton
      @EricRShelton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I get what you're saying, it would've been kind of difficult to do- maybe especially with hi-temp paint. I would have done the entire cylinder head and belt cover to match the wheels and then ground back down to have the aluminum stripe contrasting. (I don't care everything blacked out.)

    How is it driving with Those offroad tires?
    Love The Work you did.

    • @BayCityRestorations
      @BayCityRestorations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you! aesthetically the tires are exactly what I wanted. They are pretty good on the road but of course have more vibration at higher speeds 65-70mph. Since this is mainly a bike that I plan to do local trips with they work perfect for me. If you were building a bike to do on/off road cross country riding I would probably get tires with a little lower tread.

    What an amazing job! Well done!
    Cant wait to start my custom build of an old R65 LS and make it a sweet looking scrambler.
    Lucky you, for living in the US with a lot less safety regulations than we have here in Germany :D
    I would, to improve my own safety, add more visible front blinker. I feel like they could be "too hidden" to be noticed or just add buckeye blinkers to that current setup.
    And maybe also hook up a nice, clean speedometer. There are some real nice aftermarket ones. I couldnt imagine driving around not knowing if I'm going too fast, or too slow ;D
    Nonetheless amazing build man! Keep up the good work!
