This album was such a refreshing metalcore record.
Beautiful one moment, powerful in every regard, brutal in another moment.
Kinda reminds me of Architects album, Holy Hell, with similarly harrowing lyrics and instrumentals.
Instant like! Mental health still feels so stigmatized. I battle myself and more so recently, so this was personally timely. So, thanks to the person who requested and opened up. This was so artistically articulate even though I didn't hear the vocals. I liked the music enough to want to look into them more. Nice analysis also. I like how you said it is something you don't want to listen to again but glad it exists or was brought to your attention.
The intro to this song always gives me chills because of how reminiscent the sound of whatever is doing the melody in the beginning is to the sounds of “Everywhere at the end of time”. The song perfectly conveys the idea of nostalgia for a time you’ve never lived, and the realisation that you haven’t. It’s like being haunted by ghosts that aren’t real, a phantom song, like a phantom limb, it’s just not quite right. The enitre album’s fucking great too, constantly ever so slightly waterlogged in its sound and seemingly just out of reach, a masterclass in production as part of an artistic message.
One of the best in the scene right now 🔥
Garrett is such a lyrical genius. He has a masters degree in Psychology and it shows. Haha. Really hope you continue to dive into their discography. Not a single bad song.
This reminded me of your oathbreaker review. These guys make such emotional music. It’s an interesting question, what makes music emotional, especially a song or band that tends to make LOTS of different people. Silent planet, IMO, do this to many reactors/reviewers. I think a big part is lyrical content and another, is the rawness of the artists. I’m sure there are musical techniques, but I don’t know toooo much about them to really comment.
Anyways great reaction and analysis Bryan!
That's a great question. There's definitely musical ideas (chords and melodies) that brings about specific emotions. My gut says it's a mix of that and emotive performance -- raw vocal deliveries would fall under this. As for this specific song I think the lyrics also play a big role, they're simple to understand but aren't boring to listen to -- there's still interesting metaphors and analogies.
nice to hear a lyrics focused song. never flashy always deep
Haven't heard out your entire analysis yet so you might have caught it. But the last flash of this video clip is the start of Trilogy which you reacted to a while back.
Just so you know the cleans are from the guitarist and bassist
I don't have any money but I love watching your videos, can you do when crows tick on windows by carach angren
I think the most interesting element here is just how heavy af and disturbing it gets in certain parts. It's definitely a very effective (and affective) rendering of the song's themes. However, I was less thrilled by some of the more standard metalcore (almost nu-metalish) elements that got into pockets where there was mostly just boring strumming on a single chord with really banal drum/bass support and without strong enough vocal hooks to carry it off. Still, the fact that it's able to communicate its themes so effectively at its best is still a laudable achievement, but I don't think this would be a band I'd return to (unless their other music is very different).
Definitely one of the more standard metalcore song in their discography. Would highly recommend checking out more of their stuff. Not sure what type of music you would prefer, but they cover all different styles within the metalcore genre. Hard to point you in the right direction, but maybe check out Visible Unseen, Understanding Love as Loss, Alive as a Housefire, and Native Blood Redux. Off the top of my head, those are all pretty different from one another.
