It's tragic but the truth is, whenever people evacuate an area quickly there are inevitably a few pets lost on the way. For those of us who batten down & stay put, sometimes a dog or cat will bolt out the front door before you can stop it...it is heartbreaking. But such is life.
Some will die, but good news is animals can feel this stuff before it happens and will typically make a break for high ground, or a safe spot. So as some may die. A lot I’m sure will survive.

This is worse than Wilma in 05. I hope everyone that stayed put makes it out okay. When I saw the predictions last week that it would be ~950mb my jaw dropped. This thing formed into a beautifully organized monster so quickly. Best of luck from the East coast of the state.
@@mchiang74 I’m just giving my opinion as a Floridian. Katrina only hit us, right by my house, as a weak cat 1. Andrew, while powerful, wasn’t as large. And most of the destruction came from South Miami-Dade, since the county had just weakened building codes to allow stick frame homes again. So while Andrew was an incredibly destructive hurricane in its own right, most of it’s specific destruction isn’t seen much anymore since everything in this area is built with CMUs again. I remember watching the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans though, talking with my mom about it as a 14 year old kid, and just breaking down crying. Also a highly destructive storm, and I think a lot of the blame for the “worse than it should’ve been” title goes to the government’s handling of it, before during and after. Really, it’s hard to say “[x] is worse than [x]” when it comes to weather. There are too many variables involved.

wtf , not for broadcast then broad cast. so sad , but we have had here in australia too. fires , pandemic , then non stop rain. some ppl on their 6th flood in 12 months . they forecast another year of rain, here. its so hard to imagine after so much rain. in australia we call this a cyclone , ive been in one , not for the faint hearted, horrific. we had hailstones here as big as a rock melon , smashed cars ,trees , roofs, concrete and people. super cells that shredded houses , trees , boats . nature in its full fury. stay safe mate!

From what I’ve heard Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda have held up much better than they did for Hurricane Charley back in 2004, which almost completely destroyed those two towns. That’s exactly what I would hope for considering the much stricter building standards put in place after Charley. Unfortunately, I don’t care how strong you rebuild a town. When you have 150mph winds you’re still going to see damage. However, based upon what I’ve seen the damage after Ian isn’t anywhere close to being as catastrophic as Charley was. I think other towns that rebuild after Ian like Ft. Myers Beach need to put in the building standards that Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda now have.

That last shot of the RV park shows how practical it is to get an RV. You can pack up and drive away days before the storm and if the area isn't damaged, drive back again. Makes me reconsider my original plan of buying a home in FL.
But this doesn't happen to every coastal town every year.....anywhere ya live will you have crappy weather....the pros outweigh the cons when living on or near the beach....Floridians know the risk ..and they'll rebuild n continue to live in paradise 😎

There needs to be rezoning no modular or mobile homes. They just brake apart in a storm and flying debris is so dangerous. Prayers for all the families in S Florida from N Florida.
This is Florida. We go thru this every few years. Sometimes multiple times a year. Some years are worse than others (Andrew, Ivan, Michael, Irma, now Ian). But in the end we clean up, we rebuild, and we press forward. That's what we Floridians do. This year will be harder with all the economic crap caused by the left but Florida will pull through. We have a good governor and experienced hurricane survivors.
We've got a shit governor who has allowed insurance companies to pull out, some as recently as 8 weeks ago. He hasn't spoken a word, instead campaigning across the country and fighting for identity politics.
I am surprised all the trees are still standing and the power poles aren't snapped in half , I went through hurricane Michael and there was nothing left standing most trees were gone and all the cell towers and power poles were taken out and houses flat on the ground

Not for nothing but considering the size, strength and duration of this beast of a hurricane, so far it looks like the damage to building structures isn't too bad.... nothing like after Hurricane Charlie leveled the area

Hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles flooded and never again drivable. Damage will be in the billions. That said, I see no reason whatsoever to rebuild in these flooded areas. Sea level rise and increasing intensity of hurricanes means South Florida will soon be uninhabitable anyway. These coastal towns need to be abandoned and the climate refugees resettled in safer areas.
Just wait till tomorrow. The wind still shook the house till about 940 or so. So nobody could get out to get footage. 6 1/2 straight hours of wind that shook the walls and actually vibrated the damn slab. It was bad but here I'm alive. I think if I would have stayed at my house it would be different. I probably don't have a house to go back to.....but I'm alive
Having been in Florida in 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons in Florida, including Katrina, NONE of those storms that hit Florida held a candle to this monster!
When nature is at its strongest there's little or nth we can do to counter it! Just try and be safe everyone I know many will lose alot but as long as you have life material things will come

So nobody could get out to get footage. 6 1/2 straight hours of wind that shook the walls and actually vibrated the damn slab. It was bad but here I'm alive. Having been in Florida in 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons in Florida, including Katrina, NONE of those storms that hit Florida held a candle to this monster!
