I love the fact that Dave stuck to the original'ish drum rhythms, especially during Higher Ground and Tell Me Something Good. Nothing too crazy, just right in the pocket where he should be. That beech kit really sings with his playing. Also, Yolanda… Just amazing.
Wow! A must hear for those who like bass. Yolanda Charles ... innovative groove maestro on the bass. Faces off to the drummers. My favorite was the one on the left. Great job by everyone....
What a great idea. Yolanda is top bassist. I've watched other vids where she explains how best to sing a melody against a contrasting bass rhythm .... This lady has charisma and comes across as humble (all the best musos do)
Was just watching an old video with Yolanda playing at Jools Holland with Paul Weller, I just didn't recognize her. Stumbled across this vid which was great to watch. Love all the different styles going on. TGFYT! (Thank Goodness For TH-cam)
Love the playing styles here. I'm definitely going to bookmark this vid and use some of those fills live now! And all 3 kits sounded great in their own right
Middle one for me, it's crazy how tastes can change from one to another, I would NEVER play the two other kits if they were tuned that high. And still some people love it. It's weird
mark simmons I'm assuming it's an older series snare? No problem, contact us through our email on our website www.gurudrums.co.uk send us a few pictures, & we'll do our best to tell you what you need to know :)
@@frankspikes7858 I have to agree 100%! He was absolutely atrocious, in just about every way possible. His timing was child-like, at best, his drums sounded awful and that wasn’t just because of the way he was hitting them, which was seemingly as hard as possible - don’t think he’s ever heard of dynamics - he didn’t at any point play with Yolanda, rather he played at her and most definitely on top of her. He’s also no doubt, never heard of the concept of playing *with* someone, probably like far too many these days, they learn in their bedroom, alone, playing with either band minus one type recordings or just with regular recordings, but not actual human beings. Worse still, it seemed like he played pretty much the same thing for all the choruses, regardless of what Yolanda’s groove was like. Contrast that with the 1st drummer and he was truly a very skilled musician. The way he was toying with the beat, playing in front of and behind it, both subtly and obviously was beautiful. In fact, I think the only time I saw Yolanda smile was when he was doing just that, and very well. His technique and use of dynamics were both excellent, he was constantly listening to what Yolanda was doing and they were definitely playing off each other, unlike the other two who might as well have been playing with someone else because they sure weren’t playing *with* Yolanda. At all! Both those other two drummers had simply no place being there and having the privilege to be in the same studio with someone the likes of Yolanda Charles. I’m an electric bass player myself, and don’t really listen to her stuff much but I’ve heard her enough times to know she can really lay down some lines. True, she doesn’t have super incredible technique and she her solos aren’t the kind of thing which will be studied and transcribed and learned and played by bassists in their struggle to get proper, horn-like phrasing and vocabulary but that’s not what she’s about; she knows it and she sticks to what she knows and does it well. Just my 2 cents worth.
I have NEVER HEARD drums sound like the middle set! I LOVE THEM!!! Is that a 22" or 24" in the middle set? What are all the sizes? It sounds like THOR himself. Please tell me they are somewhat affordable - if not, can I be a slave to the company for few months to get a free set?
Fun to watch. Newbie bass players, watch her thumb. She holds it mostly parallel to neck. This is proper and will save you much grief and allow you to play much easier and better!
Nice. Yolanda Charles is a great bassist, she has great time feel, tone, groove. The drummers are very fine players too, however, other than Yolanda herself, I don't like the way any of them 3 interpreted the groove/feel to Herbie Hancock's 'Hang Up Your Hang Ups', 4:41-5:39.
All online Nicholas. www.gurudrums.co.uk Please check out the series of honest capture videos on our site & on our TH-cam channel for accurate representations of the drum sounds. Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us through the site. Best regards, Andy.
Howy, this was recorded old school, & not really designed to feature the true sound of the drums. We really loaded the room without isolation, & of course, we didn't go for any impressive EQ or production stuff. I encourage you to check out the "Honest Capture" videos of the individual kits where you'll hear exactly how they sound with zero manipulation. These videos are unique in so much as they don't employ any of the usual "official" drum company production techniques. Hope you like them :) Peace - Andy.
I guess I should just use ear goggles, truly...most music sounds pretty lame on a cell phone. :-) not being a drummer it was bass guitar , Yolanda to be exact that I came for and it just never showed off her as much as she deserves.
+Renascent Man Ok, fair comment, & thank you for having the decency to reply. I'm sorry my reply to you was based on irritation. As for Yolanda's performance in this video, she's in a supporting roll. The idea is to feature the drums, but in a fun way. If you follow Yolanda, you'll already know that she's a phenomenal player, & can stretch out with the best. Here, she's being the professional session musician, & doing exactly what was called for on the day. As a footnote, I've lost count of the number of times comments have been based on listening on a cell phone or similar device. It's a modern danger for both producer & listener :(
Hey no problem Bro. I appreciate your work with percussion and the finer points of tuning. Truly it is good to see un-edited interplay between musicians. So much is just stacked on tracks these days.
+Bigchuck678 This is the only video we've ever put up that does have some mild EQ applied, but lower frequencies were removed, not added. All our other videos are completely without manipulation of any kind, but this one was more for fun than a fidelity study of the instrument's sound. We removed some lower frequencies because of the excessive bass loading in the room, especially from the 24" walnut bass drum. Are you getting too much bottom end uniformly, or mainly from the centre kit?
in the left corner we have the RIDE GUY , in front we have THE GROOVE guy and in the right corner we have THE *TECHNICAL GUY*
Lol so true!
the guy on the right reminded me of Marco Minnemann.
You can feel her struggle when it’s his turn.
In the audience we have the listeners the most important of them all because thats who they are Playing for.
I dug the dude in the middle's style the best. I kinda wish the drummers had swapped around, though, so we could hear them each play all three kits.
I love the fact that Dave stuck to the original'ish drum rhythms, especially during Higher Ground and Tell Me Something Good. Nothing too crazy, just right in the pocket where he should be. That beech kit really sings with his playing. Also, Yolanda… Just amazing.
The 3rd set has an AMAZING sound! Well done, guys!
The kit on the left... Pure perfection in sound
Can't stop listening to this..... Yolanda you are fantastic!! The boys are pretty good too. Thanks for recording this. It's brilliant. Paul x
Glad you like it Paul, & yes, Yolanda is fantastic! :)
She's a dream, saw her live at Zimmer, cracked a smile every once in a while.... 🥰
The second kit is my type.
And I just loved all the groove lines. Three great drummers. :)
The first I like I would say it's the 3rd but my style of playing coz along with the 2th drummer
Wow! A must hear for those who like bass. Yolanda Charles ... innovative groove maestro on the bass. Faces off to the drummers. My favorite was the one on the left. Great job by everyone....
3:23 padu groove bassline part ni
I find this endlessly entertaining. And completely agree on GatoPaints drummer characterizations. And love her creativity. Drum sound quality...wow!
I love the sound of the drum kit in the middle!
Thanks Nicholas :)
Guru Drums what's the size of that kick? 😊
Nicholas Dentato 24" x 14" :)
Nicholas Dentato Guru Drums In-Tense series American walnut stave - Honest Capture This is a more representative capture :)
Fuck the sound - I love that guy's playing!!!!
Amazing bassist and drummers, middle kick is bee's knees
Love that bass tone!
What a great idea.
Yolanda is top bassist. I've watched other vids where she explains how best to sing a melody against a contrasting bass rhythm .... This lady has charisma and comes across as humble (all the best musos do)
+Kick biker Yes, she's utterly wonderful :)
And all 3 kits sounded great in their own right
Well put... and they all rock the pocket !!! And It's Miss Charles if your Nasty !!
You appeared on my recommendations! Next time I would be able to join in, me and my Meinl cymbals.
What is missed in her? Nothing: she's talentous, she's elegant, she's beautiful. I think i've fallen in love. Lol
She is a really heavy snorer ...
All the 3 drumkits sounds very impresive. Really liked the sound. Thanks for the vid.
As from 3:23 it is like honey. Pure beauty of the sound and groove
agreed
I like that this is groove based/musical and not just chops.
Thank you ❤️
Crazy.....so good!!!!!!
For me both sound and grove wise, its something in-between 2 and 3. Leaning more on the two side :D
Wow!
Super fun video!
That was awesome! There should be more videos structured like this one!!!
with just one word.... awesome..
Wow great - well done, I liked it. ;)
I LOVE THE FIRST DRUM SOUND
Just awesome stuff right here :3
Lovely video. superb
Thank you :)
drum kit in the middle amaze
Good God that center kit( and player) sounds big but tight.
those are the best kick drums i have ever heard!! the one in the middle, so much oomf!
amazing work andy!
Thanks :) Almost too much oomf actually (is that possible?)
Yesssss
Middle one for me, it's crazy how tastes can change from one to another, I would NEVER play the two other kits if they were tuned that high. And still some people love it. It's weird
+Amélie Le Roux Something here for everyone :) 3 different kits, 3 different tunings, 3 different playing styles.
Amélie Le Roux very like his bass drum)
Que bonito !!
amazing i am proud to own a guru snare
We're proud to have you playing one of our instruments Mark :)
it is indeed a keeper but who can i contact to find out a bit more about it
mark simmons I'm assuming it's an older series snare? No problem, contact us through our email on our website www.gurudrums.co.uk send us a few pictures, & we'll do our best to tell you what you need to know :)
Yyyyyeeess, good! Sa déchire
try and keep up fellas >=;)
I bet the bass player had a blast !!!
1:40 RHCP Higher Ground or is it just my ear?
toll! Groovie! Nice!
Yolanda grooves for days!
The dude in the middle blows the other 2 out of the water, everything he played was so solid and tasteful.
He was the most basic. Lol. The kit he played was too low tuned for me. I understand they were going for that low thuddy fat back sound.
@@frankspikes7858 I have to agree 100%! He was absolutely atrocious, in just about every way possible. Just my 2 cents worth.
the guy on the left did really nice interpretations. liked him the most by far.
so smooth and not to complicated
also dat snare sound, so crisp :D
She is amazing, those tasty basslines, grooves or whatever deserves heaviness from the drums ... like dale crover
Not heard of Yolanda before, but amazing playing!
She's wonderful in every respect.
Cook is one of the best drummer I have seen in my life. Is he playing in any band?
+Verucarock He plays with Marika Hackman.
After I watched the Hanz Zimmer live in Prague... i just fell in love with her.... she is my new crush.... now that was an awesome music session!!!
Same here
the middle drum set has killer sound
Fucking awesome!!!
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeesss))

The 3rd set is my sound :)
The Swagger Is Strong With This One..
for me she's a beautiful bassist..
easier to pull out of the mix than trying to add them!
Fun to watch. Newbie bass players, watch her thumb. She holds it mostly parallel to neck. This is proper and will save you much grief and allow you to play much easier and better!
melhor vídeo, foda!
Só uma palavra: FODA!
1:49 this bassline too

2:07😍
Yolanda is so great! The middle drummer has the fatback sound ;-)
Bassist funky yes, the drums are all over the place most of the time.
What is the song of the first jam? Feel familiar with the first jam, but i can't tell what song it is
What song is the bass lick at 1:18 from?
Higher ground
THANK YOU
No worries man
the guy on the right rocks
Yolanda is so sweet !
this is the weirdest gang bang ever and in a best way too
galing

The 3rd drummer in the left complemented with the bass chords the most, in my opinion.
That's the ticket...
Damn, I wish I had money so I could buy me some muthahuggin' drums, yo!
4.o8 funky as fk
you mean 4:08 ?
I NEED MORE THUMBS TO PUT UP! apologies for yelling....
2nd jam tho
middle guy had the best flow I thought lol
i only really like the drumset on the left, mainly because the others are not tuned to my liking, but im not a fan of any of the bass drums

4some?
Bass drums are not sound/mix compatible with bass guitar...
Yolanda please be my girlfriend
+Alexandre Pinto Join the queue ;)
too much bass on the kick drum. They sound muddy and unnatural with my subs turned on.
