I really like SWAY which like i3 you have control over how new windows will be launched I like Hyprland for how it looks and performs, I find the config files much easier to deal with, especially after I split the hyprland, conf file into to smaller focused files and After living in hyprand for a few months on a slower backup PC I backup up my W11 PC, formatted it and installed garuda hyprland, Months later still on it and happy that I did But as always with Linux your mileage may vary pick what works for you the best, Thanks for this video
Hi Eric, great video. Hyprland looks great with its animations but it's always going to be i3/sway for me. I actually prefer manual tiling where I can control where my windows will go, and I'm also big into tabbed layouts. Master + Stack just seems way too limited for me. Random question, how do you find the audio quality on that Dell Lattitude? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad right now and only complaint is the audio sounds a bit weaker and tin-can like on Linux vs Windows. Been looking into a Dell for my next machine and wondering if they handle Linux audio any better.
Hi Chai, thanks! yeah the stacked layout is definitely nice and I can imagine you'll miss it if you're used to it but maybe they will implement it in the future. Who knows. About the laptop speakers. Indeed the ThinkPads' are not great. I have a t590 and can confirm. The laptop I use in the video is very old so also not super quality, sounds a little damp ( for lack of a better term). You say the audio is better on Windows maybe Windows loads in some audio enhancers but that's just guessing. You could have a look at pulse effects on Linux flathub.org/apps/com.github.wwmm.pulseeffects if you would like to tune audio. Not sure about the drivers myself (not a specialist, sorry). About the dell laptop speakers. I guess it depends on the model of the laptop. In general how smaller and thinner the laptop is how worse the sound is. Currently I have a Legion 5 and it's pretty decent in audio. Hopefully my response is somewhat useful for you and thanks for responding to my video. Have a great day!
Hi, I looked at it quickly but decided first to look at hyprland (both are new to me). I also saw more Hyprland screenshots shared on Reddit, so I figured I'd check that first. Could be a nice topic for a new video, thanks.
What is up with sway's containers? They're inconsistent, and sometimes you can't move a window out of them. Also, how do you change that god damn foot?! I don't get the hype, it's a featureless terminal.
I tried Hyprland once but opening Electron apps like VSCode or Spotify or Discord or almost any other app it required a bunch of "allow wayland" flags to launch so I left it and went back to i3.
Sway give a more solid ground to build my island around and hyprland just gives a volcano you have to start the eruption yourself and eventually you will have better than sway config Sway have a default definition you build around like status bar etc.
According to the documentation you could use global hotkeys. I've played around a little with it but also wasn't able to set it up for OBS. Although I make use of screen recording using a capture card and record using a separate pc I think it's a nice feature to use. I'll have another look at the global hotkeys soon.
Hi coming back to this, I checked a little further you can 'pass' a command to a program. Check the documentation wiki.hyprland.org/Configuring/Binds/#global-keybinds in my config I added: "bind = SUPERALT,r,pass,^(com\.obsproject\.Studio)$" and in OBS configured "Super+Alt+r" to start and stop recording. This works. So probably you can use your own preferred keybindings as well.
I've setup a comprehensive Hyprland install (on arch) and found it to be very nice, especially for its use of Wayland. The reason I won't be switching from i3 is because there are still no official Hyprland repos (so running it is risky) and the other is that I just don't like auto tilers. They just frustrate me by trying to optimize something that doesn't need an optimization. This is especially annoying on 4k screens where you are more likely to have several containers spanning 3 columns. I know some recent updates have addressed this problem, but it's still not as clean as i3's manual tiling.

Where did you get the static image for the video with the retro system?
It's one one of Oriol Ferrer Mesia (retro computer terminal)
Why not go to sway? As it's a I3 replacement in Wayland.

I've looked at say as well. You can check it out in my latest video th-cam.com/video/q1ZUeB33TT0/w-d-xo.html

Xwayland now fix it fully, just part of hyprland

I love the analogy and agree with it!
I would like to experiment with Wayland, but no keybindings in OBS is not practical.

You can switch to manual mode in your config. I use arch so obviously it’s in the AUR as far as repos.
