2ND EDITION
France ’40 2nd Edition is a major upgrade to the original game. The rules for Extended Movement, Combat, Advance After Combat, Breakthrough Combat, and Determined Defense have been updated so they are more in line with the recent games in the 19XX series (such as Stalingrad ’42 and Salerno ’43). A new scenario has been included designed by Mark Merritt that combines both maps.
In addition, many new units have been added and some old units modified to provide a more accurate order of battle for both Sickle Cut and Dynamo. A few minor cities, some roads, and a fortified hex were added to the Dynamo map.
And most importantly, both scenarios have been sent through the playtest cycle again to make sure they are better balanced than they were in the first edition.

Love your cat's penchant for the dramatic. She decides to go for a niiiiiiiiiice stretch just as you're unfolding the maps. Just so you know who's in charge.
Thanks for this; I just got my shipment notice today for this, so by Tuesday I'll be checking this out myself (sans the mounted maps, which I have no use for). I have most of these Simonitch games, still in shrink, and am just looking for the opportunity to actually devote some time to them!!!!
Hi Stiglr, exactly...lol
This is the last one I need. I've played them all. Almost. Confession. I've just done a small scenario for Stalingrad 42 n haven't touched the expansion yet. It might be in shrink.😳
its my second in the series. i got North Africa '41 as well.
Nicely done, the map explanations are helpful! I'm looking forward to mine arriving on Tuesday. I hope. My GMT games tend to get waylaid in the Rockies.
Hi boss, thanks for the visit. Thanks, looking forward to you video. =}
Appreciate the insight into he limitation with the mount maps alignment.
Hi Peter, you are welcome. As cool as the mounted map is, and I am glad i purchased it, you would be hard pressed to use it for the combined scenario. I don't think GMT did anything wrong and they made a fair compromise (IMHO) to offer a mounted map(s). Maybe I should have gotten a second mounted map?
@@HissyCat Ah, second maps; they often don't fit in the box when you have two copies. But listen to us, carrying on, when many people wonder where their meals will come from today 😟 . I just like the game. Thanks again for posting your thoughts online. I'm retired and terrible with technology, so I rely on people like yourself for help. Appreciate your help.
@@peterixon8708 i never forget how blessed i am. Thanks for watching and glad my videos help, even if just a little. =)
gorgeous cat mine often interrupts as well
Hi GH, thanks for the visit. Cabby loves to involve herself whenever she can...sounds like yours does as well. =)
Lovely box art! Mine should be here in the middle of the week. I am very big into the early part of ww2 and France 1940 in particular is of great interest to me. Hope you enjoy this when you get it on the table! Simonitch's games are a lot of fun. I've only played Salerno 43 but enjoyed it so much I quickly purchased North Africa 41, Normandy 44 and France 40.
Hi Nordic, thanks for watching. That is quite an endorsement of the series. I have North Africa '41 and France '40 and like you have an interest in the early war. I hope to get it to the table soonish. I am looking to buy the old AH France 1940 game as well.
@@HissyCatI am not sure what it is about the system that I like but I was hooked after the first turn of Salerno 43. I would like to get France 40 on the table asap but I am playing Great Battles of Alexander deluxe and hope to get at least a few battles done before switching.
@@nordicmaelstrom4714 you are getting me hyped to play it. I have 2-3 in the queue, but it will get played this year.
@@HissyCatWhat games are in the queue? Well get hyped even more! You have the game! Start punching and clipping the counters and before you know it you will be playing it!
@@nordicmaelstrom4714 SOE: Lysander, Western Front Aces and Nach Paris, I actually started to clip the counters yesterday. =)
Getting mine Thursday. I'm in the midst of a play through of Stalingrad '42, though. Need another table! Haha.
Hi Kurt, thanks for the visit. I am clipping the counters now. I think we all could use an extra table...lol
Trying to finish rules for MMP Storm Over Jerusalem. Then NA 41 on big table then France 40. Back table Napoleonics, then the solitaire games on order.
Great unboxing sir
Thank you sir. I'll drop your game off soon.
@@HissyCat have had lots of grandkid, youngest, watching this week. Like 3.5 hrs today, then about two to recover.
@@charleslatora5750 Sounds like a wonderful day my friend, grand kids are simply the best!
Busy man... =)
My friend Harry just bought this. He's bringing it over tomorrow when we will play Russia Besieged. If he didn't get the mounted map I'll rag on him...
Hi Phalanx, thanks for watching. LOL, be nice, the paper maps are actually very nice.
Your assistant was purrfect.
Hi Magnus, thanks for watching, and yes Cabby has to get involved in my gaming… lol
I have the 1st edition of this buried away somewhere ... I will have to try to find it!
Hi Boss, thanks for watching. Sounds like an adventure in the man cave of madness. =)
nice unboxing, my copy shipped today. Can't wait to get it on the table
Hi CardboardCommander, Thanks for the visit, its a beautiful game. I hope to play it later in the year, my play list is currently full. lol
I hear you with the playlist. I have had a great start to 24 and have gotten a few games knocked out. RAF, WWI, Breakout Normandy, Monty's Gamble, Manila The Savage Streets, A House Divided, and now Imperial Tide is on the table. I also play ASLSK and Combat Commander on VASSAL in my spare time,, so I get the full play list. haha @@HissyCat
@@CardboardCommander awesome, i am playing Nevsky vs Zilla Blitz on Rally the Troops, got Sea Wolves played, a mission in Western Front Aces... so many great games, the hobby is very healthy. =)
every gamer needs a cat gaming buddy. My Black Cat, Diesel, is my work buddy and my gaming buddy. if I am working to long or hard, he knows how to turn off monitors, and re-arrange the axis of attack of the panzers..
Hi Richard, thanks for watching and you are 100% correct. Cabby doesn't turn off my monitors but she likes to get between me and my two computers while I'm working so I can't type on the keyboards and likes to knock my pencils off the table every chance she gets...lol I bet Diesel is the same, the cats have a secret union.
I’d love to hear what you think of this played solo. I’m always wary of a game that isn’t specifically designed to be played solo.
Hi Shane, thanks for watching. i plan too after i do a play thru of SOE: Lysander, the game that is next in my play queue. I will make sure and share my thoughts about solo play. I am like you, i don't mind playing both sides, but for solo i prefer solo specific designed games.
I'm waiting for my copy to arrive as well. I looked at a number of games on the subject and decided on this one
Hi Chris, Thanks for watching. This is one of my first early war, wargames. Looking forward to playing it. I really love the early war French Tanks.
@@HissyCat Some of the French tanks were superior to the German tanks.
@@chrisb.1116 yep, and very cool looking as well.
I didn’t get the new edition, but it’s pretty fun. I assume I’ll pick it up at some point.
Hey Boss, thanks for the visit. It looks fun, i hope to play it before the end of the year. =)
I have the 1st edition and have not gotten it on the table yet! ...not sure I can be convinced on an upgrade.
Hi Grumbling, thanks for watching. I am not sure you need to upgrade, save the funds for other games you don't own. I didn't own it, so that's why i picked it up.
Love the art
Agreed, the box cover is awesome, and the counters and map are top shelf.
Would like to see you do a top ten style video about the main manufacturers and designers
Great idea! I'll have a serious think about that. Thanks for sharing the idea.
Well done
Thank you Boss!
Looks great!
Thanks, it looks like a fun game and the components are beautiful. =)
this is great... thanks so much...
Hi Jester, thank you sir. =)
I think it's safe to say, cat not included.
Hi Ken thank you for watching. No Cabby is not included... LOL
My cats love to get on camera as well.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for watching. Cabby loves paper and the maps are her favorite thing to stretch out on… lol what kind of cats do you have?
@@HissyCat Two siblings a ginger male and a calico female. They love sleeping in game boxes and climbing on the table during videos.
That’s their job!!! lol
why didn't i order the mounted map? am I dumb or what... I have not idea how that happened... geez..
lol, I don't think it's a requirement. I mean it's a beautiful map and I am glad I ordered it, but if you play the new scenario, you will be using the paper maps, which are very good quality!
@@HissyCat I just went to GMT Games and saw they had Great War Commander in stock... so order that plus the mounted map for France 40...
@@idjester lol, All is well that ends well. =)
@@HissyCat it was because I didn't order the mounted map that I went there.. and I was thinking I wonder if they have Great War Commander yet.. so yeah without that I wouldn't have known they had that game... so it was good in the long run..
@@idjester I love a story with a happy ending. =)
How is this game solo? I know some are more suitable to solo than others.
Hi dreadknot, thanks for watching. I have not played it solo yet, but I will at some point later this year… I hope. Lol I suspect it would be the normal two player game played solo experience, I didn’t see any hidden info or fog of war aspects to game play.
@@HissyCatI would second the request for a solo review of France ‘40 and/or North Africa’41
@@shaneintheuk2026 Hi Shane, thanks for watching. I will. I have two games ahead of it in my current queue, but maybe both before the end of the year.
Where's my copy?
That is your copy, i stole it from your porch.
Darn. Me very jealous.
Kitty!!!!
@@HissyCat hahaha...not funny...
@@charleslatora5750 i know, i also didn't escape
Hey, teach your cat 🐈 how to play and you'll always have an opponent.
That's a good idea!
