    Jessica was the baby daughter of the song's composer, Dickey Betts, who also played the lead guitar.

    Your reaction is perfect! I love the words that you use to describe it: pulsating yet relaxing, beachy 😄. The talent is incredible in this band: Gregg Allman on organ, Dickey Betts on guitar, Chuck Leavell on piano, Lamar Williams on bass, Jaimoe Johanson and Butch Trucks on drums. They are Southern Rock royalty.

    The Allman Brothers are one of the few bands when taking off on their long instrumental flights of improvisation always kept it interesting, they never just meadered. Again they had an almost telepathic understanding where each other were. Each musician spoke and didn't talk over the one speaking. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is my favorite example of this type of playing in a different example in a different genre off of their excellent Live At Fillmore East album. Great analysis Kirti and Savio you make my day today.

    • @scottmcgregor562
      @scottmcgregor562 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Gerald H absolutely jazz was a huge influence on all of the Allman Brothers. I seem to recall reading an interview with Dicky Betts saying that "...Elizabeth Reed was influenced by composition by Miles Davis. I don't recall which one.

    • @TheBigjohn527
      @TheBigjohn527 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottmcgregor562 ... Dickey B said years later that the title "Elizabeth Reed" was actually the name of a deceased lady with a nice tombstone/area in a gravesite (probably somewhere in Macon Ga) where he would take (at the time) Boz Scagg's girlfriend there. Yeah, he was hittin' that secretly for awhile.
      Influence & also inspiration, you betcha!

    That's Chuck Leavell on piano. Some people believe this to be the very best piano play on a classic Rock album ever.

    Perfectly stated: “magical and mystical”. The Allman Bros. hit incredible grooves while live jamming- Greg: great keyboard and voice, his brother Duane: one of the all time best slide guitar players, of course Dicky Betts, and 2 drummers.

  • @tommathews3964

    Jessica was Dickey Betts' daughter and he wrote this happy song for her. At this point in the Allman Brothers' history there was, are you ready for this, ONE guitar in the band. That's how good Dickey was/is! Chuck Leavell is the piano player on this album and Lamar Williams is the bassist. These two were added after the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. You must do "Blue Sky" from the "Eat a Peach" album, matter of fact do the whole album along with Live at Fillmore East. The soundtrack of my life!

    When I was a kid, one particular tv station would go to the test pattern from time to time due to technical difficulties and they'd put this song on. This was the first exposure I had to the Allman brothers and it was years later I found their whole catalog and Jessica always makes me chuckle when I hear it, coz it reminds me of technical difficulties.

    I had the privilege of meeting Gregg Allman (organ, piano, lead vocalist) and Dickey Betts (lead guitarist and writer of Jessica) after a concert in 1986. These incredibly talented gentlemen were friendly and easy-going, and it was an honor to speak with them and shake their hands. In 1993, I had the privilege of meeting Gregg Allman's son Devon Allman and doing a concert video of his band. Devon was the little blonde boy shown on the cover of the 1973 Allman Brothers Band album titled Brothers and Sisters.

    Jessica - I love this song - it just continues, has such great melody, such lifts and dips, and the way it moves almost had you both dancing ! It is pure and clear enjoyment. Solid drumming, super guitar riffs, rockin' piano...introductory phrasing that we return to in the end. Great Patreon request !

    This was (and still is) used by the BBC for Top Gear. The classic series used more or less this version right up to the 90s, but I recommend another song by Elton John called Out of The Blue from 1976. This was used as the closing them to original Top Gear (with Jessica as the opening)

    Love Love Love it. If you listen closely,most of those lead parts are two guitars playing in harmony,lick for lick. Amazing to watch. I saw the Allman Brothers and Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes were playing this together. The whole band so great. Love how they kind of wander off and jam and the circle back to the tune. They did this in a lot of their songs in concert,to point where you may even forget what song they were playing:) We would laugh about it,@nd then you hear it coming back. Love the band,and miss Gregg Alman. It was blow to lose him and Tom Petty in the same year. My two favorites. RIP

    There was a documentary a few years back about Tom Dowd; the legendary producer from Atlantic who recorded so many greats his words matter. He said the Allman Brothers had a musical empathy that was magical, and the musicianship to go with it. In his words, 'Dickie would be in C, Gregg would be in Flat, and Berry would be in D, and it would swing!"

    A lot of great music exploded during this time as a tribute in the memory of Duane Allman. Dueling guitars, expert dueling keyboards backed up by a trilogy of wall of sound of percussion. Make the audience feel undeserving. First rule of entertainment.

    That classic piano solo was by Chuck Leavell, after Duane died he was brought in as a keyboard player. Chuck had a band called Sea Level, who's first album was fantastic!!1....A few tunes stand out on that one, Grand Larceny, written by Neil Larsen, then a tune called Rain in Spain, and a instrumental version of Scarborough Fair, a Paul Simon version of the song.....They were a great band!!

    A lot of the Brothers' work is kind of heavy or bluesy, which I love, but on the other hand they had some really uplifting songs too. You've already done 'Jessica' and 'Soulshine', I'd also recommend 'Revival' and 'Blue Sky'. All of these songs lift me up when I listen to them.
