@@ScottFreeSBPespecially before all the netdecking and TH-cam streamers piloting decks for you to watch before you build them. Brian was definitely a legendary player. Making it to the finals of the protour at 15. Olle won the first pro tour at 17
I say this with all the love and admiration for this show, but this episode acutely reminds me of jon bois/chart party/dorktown in the best ways possible. This is far and away the best pretty deece to date.
This is one of the only videos that talks about the internal struggle of a player in their own head and I think it's something that deserves being talked about a lot more. I just punted an RCQ top 8 a few months ago to my own nerves... my opponent capitalized, sure, but it was my game to punt and I did. Beautifully spoken. I'm sad that we won't see more Pretty Deece videos
I love learning about the history of Magic. Truly the Wild West of MTG back then, back when the game was much less popular or renown, no sleeves, rowdy audience, no internet sites to browse for deck ideas (at least not to the extent we have now). Original decks abounded and created what we now know to be obviously insane combos but back then, no one seemed to understand thier worth. I'd love to see more videos like this!
The single best piece of MTG content I've ever experienced. This was so great I watched it 5-6 times in a row. Great job on the performance, music, production, script, supervision, editing, etc. Everything is perfect. Just put in an order. Keep up the great work!
I have watched this 5-game set at least 20 times and even still, watching this have me chills. The additional commentary is great and mirrors so much of how this game made me feel when I first saw it.
Magic complexity is amazing, two simple strategies against each other creates one immense decision tree which only the surface I can comprehend. I love this game.
What an absolutely beautiful analysis of a set of magic games. This was such a work of art to experience, from explaining the decks to showing David's obvious stress under the situation to even including the crowd reactions, you really highlighted what makes this era of magic so unique to watch and experience. Thanks for the video. I would love to see more like it
This is the only youtube series I repeatedly binge through over and over again. Even now I go back and watch 5~6 Pretty dece vids at a time because the flow is so good and the commentary is timeless. Exemplary work.
Love this episode and the chart party infulence but I think it still need a little work before it good. I think the slides showing the board states and the end of each turn dont convey what happen that turn very well. Especially with how fast they move to people unfamiliar with the decks. I think showing what spell were cast (or cards used like necro or treetop) each turn would do a better job at showing what actually happened each turn way better than lands + card in hand at the end of each turn. Like showing what hand destruction happen or what spell got countered need to be front and center when you are showing so many broad states and turn all at once. Keep of the fucking work tho, love this series
The presentation of a game is remarkably poorly done. At 9:42 why is Unmask shown for only 1 second? 9:45 What does Grief have to do with a subject? This shit at 17:17 is unbearable. Music is often too loud. I understand most cards used (not all) and can barely follow. Some better way is needed to make videos like this.
I could listen to hours upon hours of you very intensely explaining decks and matchups like this with that tense Necro music. Your passion is very visible in these videos and I can't get enough of this series.
Love the comments of astonishment playing with no sleeves back in the day. Was common to see the power nine and dual lands played with no sleeves while drinking Mt Dew and eating pizza lol. If we only knew 😅
I think I experienced a brand new emotion when you said the final scripted lines. "But you still gotta play the games. And therein lies the rub." I've never experienced that level of verbal despair in my life. It was bone-chilling. What the hell, Jon. You're a born narrator. Thank you for all the work you and your conspirators put into this show.
i cannot tell you how cathartic it was waking up to 46 minutes of Pretty Deece on a bad day. it smoothed my morning and the rest of my day in a calming and important way i cannot properly describe. Thank you, Jon
I don't normally comment on TH-cam, but the Pretty Deece series is some of the best, most engaging, and insightful Magic: The Gathering content available. Thank you for continuing to produce the series.
I feel for Brian Davis. There are a few things in which I am deftly competent; but even so, there are instances where I make boneheaded blunders. Exacerbated by the pressure of the spotlight, I think Brian just blundered. Unfortunately for him, it happened during the finals of a PT vs. one of the OG goats of Magic. If Bob were less skilled, he may not have pulled out a win. If Bob were a lesser known MTG player, this same match may have been forgotten.
Pretty Deece is the best MTG content. It's Magic Man Sam at a bit of distant second but you can feel the love in every video. Even the end of organised play one.
Davis was playing around disrupt the whole game. In game 1 he played around disrupt instead of using wasteland to get rid of a blue source. He left 1 mana open to pay for disrupt and got countered with force of will. I have watched this video multiple times and I’m still learning from this video.
Maybe my favourite episode of pretty deece so far, I adore this series with all my everything I’ve rewatched them all so many times. Love seeing videos this long and love seeing new pretty deece again, keep up the awesome work!
Best video I’ve seen in a while. Period. Man, the way this series mixes good MtG content, analysis, math, philosophy and good humor is outstanding. So glad pretty deece is back.
I remember watching this match in 2000 (you had to download the zip files back then to view them). The crowd was so loud during this match that the players could hear their reactions. You can hear Randy constantly warn the audience to stop being so loud. I started playing in 1994 and these were considered the new whipersnapper cards 😅
This sort of video is absolutely amazing It was greatly entertaining to see historical events reviewed and analysed Seeing historical formats is great and I don't just mean past modern etc, legit historical formats
this was pretty wonderful and told the story here well, but the problem is... audio balance. there are parts of this video where the music is overwhelming and drowns out the narration.
@@tcgplayercom this is especially notable at 28:20. But that's just a minor critique, this video is definitely my favorite of all past Pretty Deece videos!
About a minute in, I realized I liked it when funny John talk about funny banned card and I don't care about these two guys. About forty minutes in, I think I finally realized I had gotten more invested in an ancient game between two strangers, than any game I've held in person in ten years. More please.
Came into the comments to post the same. Super good video and absolutely in the style of pretty good. Pretty good would never touch magic though, so go ahead I say.
Awesome Video! This along with Randy Buehlers pro tour win are some of my favorite matches of magic to go back and watch. Just great gameplay all around and I love me some Necro lol
This was absolutely incredible. A testament to the beauty and power of older Magic. With the rise of Premodern these days, videos like this make me salivate and dream of the good old days. Thank you SO much for this.
Man, only 11 minutes in and I'm loving just soaking this old Magic. I truly wish I was able to play competitively then, just to taste being stomped by these kind of decks.
I started in 95' and I remember two matches: PT Paris where Mike Long won with ProsBloom and this match. When I was teenage, a little younger than Davis, I attended a good sized extended tournament in Chicago prior to Time Spiral's banning (Spring 2000 maybe?). In spite of all the Time Spiral Blue floating around, I made it to day two at that tournament with a rogue deck list, sort of like Davis' deck. I still have fond memories of that event, such as seeing people using Alpha & Beta Black Lotuses unsleeved (not part of the tournament). I'd never do it again, but it provided some interesting perspective.
In several screenshots of Brian Davis' decklist, there are 4 copies of Drain Life maindeck and 2 in the side. This is illegal and also a typo. The two cards unaccounted for are 2 copies of Dystopia from Alliances in the sideboard, not the 5th and 6th copies of Drain Life.
This was one of the best videos, I have ever watched, as a big magic fan. I saw the Games and they were very impressive. But this summary was very very good and very entertaining. Thank you

Amazing video as always. I was 15 when I saw this on espn2, and had been playing magic for 2.5 years at that point. I remember thinking how my heart was breaking for Brian Davis after the plowshares play, cause I was the same age as him, and I know I would have been fucking nervous as hell too. Poor guy
Mad respect for Davis, at 15 thats still impressive and i had trouble seeing those plays even with the narration 🤣
he's really good at magic. glad that didn't get lost in the shuffle
Man I played sligh in that format at like 16 or 17 at a ptq and still messed up heaps. Can’t imagine playing necro at a pt final at age 15
