Bertie.....These drills look to be EXACTLY what I need. As a Canadian, stoked to see a hockey stick as part of your drills. I have been playing golf with a subtle chicken wing and allowing the handle to move away from the target at impact (had to see a video of my swing to realize it) to avoid hitting fat shots. Even though I play to a 7 handicap, I am always steering my way around the course. My ball striking is not crisp or powerful at all. We are in our covid lockdown.....so why not work on these fantastic drills to get the handle moving correctly and to properly activate the lower body? AWESOME opportunity.....thanks for helping me to work on my game.
Glad to hear that you got something out of the video. I'm in the process of editing the next one. Editing doesn't come naturally to me so it's taking longer than expected. Stay tuned.
What Bertie was saying in the final minutes was true for me. Having discovered DST golf and watched all videos and purchased the 8iron I had a golden three weeks of compressed irons. Unfortunately my bad habits came back and I lost the DST feel, and I was on to another fix. This video has motivated to follow all these drills and mirror the pros journey. I’m ready to start. Great video.
Thanks for commenting Scott, You're spot on with what you're saying, thats the reason why any good tour coach worth their salt will have their pro's doing three types of technical work. Firstly, they'll have foundation work focused on the fundamentals (grip, stance, posture & alignment). Second, their maintenance drills which are bedding in and reminding them of good feels in stock shots (this might be hitting fades and draws to enforce and remind the player of the opposite shot shapes and feels to achieve them and motion based feels like split hand grips drills etc. Lastly, they might have ongoing swing amendment drills to address the flaws and drills to correct them. Only pro's who are lost simply stand on the range and slug balls. Practice with a purpose and stick to it. Good luck.
This video was great. so happy you got a face on angle here. I've been having some success with only ball forward, taking it back about 1/4 backswing (but SUPER wide) , pausing a bit and then hitting , In order to hit the ball a fair distance from that short a backswing you have to really move your body and you have to be wide. Also seems like hitting lower trajectory BUT really concentrating on a shallow divot is really helpful. Also reinforce that as the handle starts to get more forward it will also have to get more left. I was doing that wrong for a while.
Thanks Jan, don't be tempted to change things too quickly though. Bed the drills and exercises into your movement pattern first and then build up from chip and pitch shots to fuller swings. Good luck
This -and the series-is unbelievably good and helpful! Especially bearing in mind the help is for a Professional! Bertie’s explanations are a huge help to any amateur who hasn’t been swinging correctly in the past. I have noted them all!
Wow...I paused the video at the hockey stick drill ...tried it in the backyard and immediately felt that "Pro Position" at Impact. So much more Power and Control. This feels like the Holy Grail for all us amateurs long search. Thank you so much.
What a terrific golf swing! I never would have thought that moving the ball forward would give you more room! Absolutely brilliant and... I'm now picking up my clubs and headed to the range this afternoon!
@@Dstgolf I'm in Frozen Canada... but, we have a heated outdoor range here to amuse ourselves while the world is locked down for kung flu fighting. I took your video ideas to the range, did a few of the hockey slap shot split hand drills and loved them! Thanks! I'm telling everyone about your video! Keep up the incredible content!
This is Brilliant, I've been applying lag into my swing about 2 years back and my mate said your really getting into that ball, I didn't know why it look like that, it just felt like I could get through the ball and get my body out the way, much the same as what your doing but I didn't know until now. What a great Video. PS most club pro's teach that the right elbow needs to point to the floor in the back swing, this is ok for amateurs to keep the club stable but for better players the right arm can lift more, this gives more extension at the top of the swing Keeping the left arm straight and not collapse. Ben has a great swing and could benefit from this at the top of his back swing as he has great control, he knew in the vid that something wasn't right, he just couldn't see it.....Boom!!! can't wait to see the results.
Great video! I’m reminded of greg norman who would always have the ball positioned off his left heel and vary the stance width based on length of club. He always had that nice forward press at impact…
Great video ! What helped me the most was the hockey stick swing feel. I practiced the hockey feel at home. It took me around 20 balls on the range to improve my impact position.
Have never heard it explained so well...I was a club pro for 20 + years and stopped playing for 15 plus years..I have started playing again at 68 yrs old. Have a tough time breaking 85 until today after watching this video...75 today and putting was horrible. Thanks
Hugh, Thanks so much for commenting. It's great to hear of your success with the swing thoughts and drills. Keep it going. Out of interest, I struggled with putting though out my time playing. Recently I tried something I vowed never to do, which was to use a line on the ball. I used never to be able to line it up correctly and always felt like I was taking too much time getting it lined up. Even when I did manage to line it up with my start line correctly, when I stood over the ball it never looked right to my eye. Recently, I committed to doing it and having the same routine and trusting the line irrespective of my feelings when I stood over it. The results have been incredible especially in conjunction with a putter that's also got the line. My start line is so much more consistent and now I feel I'm holing and scaring the hole a lot more often. Even when I miss I feel that I can blame a poor start line instead of blaming my putting stroke. If you haven't tried it I would urge you to do it.
@@Dstgolf I've done the same with trying the line. It seemed as though I was slowing the game down and once over the ball the line didn't seem correct so I stopped. I will give the line another try. Thx
The difference for me was aligning the line on the putter head with the line on the ball (I never used to have that). That's what helped me. That ensured the putter face and my shoulder alignment was all down the start line instead of just being conscious of where the ball should start but lining up poorly with putter head and body. I spoke to Ray Barrett on the phone about it (the inventor of TripleTrack) which Callaway licensed. The research and optics research he did with Dr Bassi was very compelling. I trust next time you update us with your results, to hear about a new course record!
AJP, remember, begin by getting used to the way that the club is promoting you to swing. So make it easy on yourself by starting without a ball and with a small chip/pitch swing. Get used to syncing your downswing movement to have a flowered handle position but with a square club face. good luck.
Really enjoying working on the drills Bertie....hope you and your followers will see some quality improvements in our next session. I have found that these movements are "easier" to fall into, if I work from just post impact to backswing and through to post impact again...the sensation is powerful and repetitive. Ben CC
Hi Ben, I actually meant to call you today, to arrange a time to do a Zoom call for our next session. I'll phone you later. I'm pleased to hear the drills are going well. I agree with you that by starting from a post impact position it provides some momentum to swing the club backwards as well as giving us the sensation of where we need to return our body and club handle to through the strike.
Excellent video, thanks for the tip. I´ve never practiced with a split hand grip, this again is an eye opener. Now, I´ll go find a sweeping brush and have a go with that. Thanks!
Handle drag! I have the DST wedge and was hitting a lot of what I call snap fades! I think I have rushed to hitting full shots too quickly without fully understanding the correct movement required to achieve the impact position. So back to drills , short swings and chip shots I think. Congratulations to Ben for doing this! I also liked how he thought the last drill produced a reverse pivot...feel versus real.
You're not alone Allan, so many new users of the DST Compressor are so eager to start hitting full shots they forget to recognise that the purpose is to try and help you feel a new movement pattern rather than apply your existing movement pattern to this club. Start small and work up. 10 metre shots with the DST Compressor Wedge is a fantastic way to develop this movement.
Catching this late - excellent instruction - the only thing I think and observation - is the leading shoulder I like to feel that my left shoulder at impact is going up towards the sky and not rotating around - which most amateurs do to get their chest facing the target.
I had to look up SCYTHE, They do show alot of different left hand holdings on this Medieval device. But did find a couple that show what was shown in the video. But all Photos do show that one must use left side BODY movement to move this Corn/Wheat/Rye, and Grass cutting device. You could always tell them at the Golf Course that you needed to instruct the person on using it to cut Down some of that tall Grass out yonder on what ever Fairway. LOL.
Fantastic, really really great stuff. He looked in such a strong powerful position. Obviously I don’t have a scythe or hockey stick but I have been working on something similar for a while with a broomstick.
Swinging a broom handle by gripping it in the middle and swinging through impact without bruising your ribs is a great way to improve leg drive lateral movement and rotation while keeping the handle forwards. Keep doing that drill its one of the best.
Years ago I took some lesson from a Pro by the name of ray Stocker; he referred to th 'power angle' atrying to maintain that angle for as long as possible. Bertie relates this to further down the power chain when he mentions the lag angle (or lack thereof) being possibly the main culprit in the leaking of shots and club head speed. Thanks to Bertie and to Ray for helping me to see some of what is wrong with my swing.
Great video! One thing that didn't come up on the backswing is Ben's shoulder turn. I know Rory has a massive turn, but could Ben turn a little more? I know that is a problem I have in my swing and it leads to lack of depth and occasionally a cupped wrist at the top
Good observation Adam, he could possibly but that extra depth and rotation won't come from his shoulders, it'll come from his lead knee flexing which'll make his hips rotate deeper, enabling more turn. I'll explain this in Session 3. Stay tuned.
Excellent information. I’m a master at this up to 1/2 swing speed. My full 8i would be 90mph. It just seems impossible for me to keep up the lag tension at that speed. Even if I feel I do, slow mo shows full extension when hands at the trail thigh! So bewildering.
Fantastic. I had seen the split hand grip method previously but the full swing context and body positioning and strike position really helps. I have used but don’t possess a scythe and so can relate to it totally. I’d love to introduce our pro to it lol (and to a few of our slower members) ☺️😉👍
So it's funny because a lot of people suggest a grass whip which would be the complete opposite of this! I'm wondering if this would work perfectly for more shorter clubs to midirons at the most and the grass whip is probably a better representation for a driver?
When I saw the 35 minute video IF YOU PLAY GOLF YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO, a gigantic light bulb came on. When Bertie explained in this video that to get to the correct impact position (the curtain drill) it's almost physically impossible to come over the top, a Chorus of Angels sung out.
Its exciting how quickly a player can develop and hone the downswing sequence to reach a lag impact when they understand and feel what it feels like. Working backwards from impact shortcuts the learning process. Good luck.
Rory is class at floating back to his left side BEFORE he begins the downswing. So he moves laterally to the left before he starts the downswing. Then it's turn and burn baby.
Nice old scythe you have there 👍🙂 Though, i understand that Melhorn and Penick was talking grasswhip. That is different tool and you use more wrist whipping action. Offcource you can cut grass many styles 😉
That didn't work much. Hit 200 balls.... Drill changed to "left and down" feeling like the left leg straightens and turns to the left. Down is - lowering of the head... USPGA tour average is 3 inches down. I got a couple of mad shaft leans through the ball. Covered the ball better, but still flippy. Hoping to drop my 12hcp down. Looking forward to episode 3 😋
Every drill should have a purpose, as much as these moves are part of a movement pattern that you might see in a PGA tour player what in particular are you wanting to address by doing this drill? I'm not knocking in the slightest I'm just interested to see how this fits into your plan of changing a movement pattern.
@@Dstgolf i'm trying to get a tony Finau lag tension, and release. I'm hoping it will help me hit the ball consistently on the course. I'm trying to utilise the great information from TH-cam channels DST golf and Craig Hanson. My current drill is mimicking impact position before i hit the ball, with like -5 degree shaft lean at impact. Interestingly it's hard to keep the soul of the club level to the ground mimicking impact. It's like the toe wants to point up, and i have to raise my hands while i flex the knees and lower the head. The more knee flex and head lowering, the more shaft lean i get. Your videos are sensational. Really enjoying your content.
@@Marky_Muk You'll need approx 10 degrees minimum to reach a lag impact. Don't forget that the shaft will develop downward droop due to centrifugal forces (the mass of the club head will pull the toe down through impact) But if you're worried you can check lie angles on a strike board. I would recommend the broom handle drill with a 10 finger grip. This is great for working out and feeling the sequence needed to unfold the lag angle correctly to reach a lag impact. It also helps body positioning and rotation so you don't bruise your ribs!
I have been "mowing" my lawn with a scythe ever since I moved to Italy; joking about how it has helped my golf swing. and now I know the rest of the story.
Again, very interesting. I would say, however, that Ben is not far off from a good, free swing and at 10.45 his impact position, distorted by the camera, indicates that his hands are slightly ahead of the ball at true impact, a fraction of a second after this photo. The reason for his slight over the top movement is easy to see at the top of the bs with his driver. Correct this and he will come to an even better impact position, play a high draw and, if he wishes, enable him to hit the ball harder. He can not hit the ball hard while swinging ott.
Correct, in addition they tilt the spine at the top (Colin Montgomerie was one exception). Ben goes slightly wrong with his long clubs, slight overswing, loses his spine tilt as his upper body moves slightly to his left, starts his ds without spine tilt and inevitably comes a touch over the top. If he was teaching someone else he would put it right easily.
It was annoying when he first posted his "review video" but the comments below his video left by his own followers and users of the DST Compressor hopefully made him see the error of his ways. Sadly not everyone who watches his video read the comments. They slate him for his intentionally misinterpreted opinion. It's short sighted to post such "tosh" trashing a product when it's used by 21 of the top 27 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Front of brain: Ok. I've checked all the things are we're ready to do this; commence take-away. Back of brain: This is all wrong, wrong, wrong. But, I'll fix it later during the coming milliseconds allowed, because I'm smart enough to make these savings adjustments but obviously too dumb to get it going right in the first place.
Ahhh...guys there's a much better and safer "training device" readily available at the same sporting goods store you bought your clubs. Yeah...it's called a Hockey stick!!!
I have wasted 20 years hating this game because my understanding of the golf swing was light years away from this idea. I had a club head speed of 151 when I was 25 and could not bring myself to play over 50% speed because I had no clue whatsoever how the swing worked and no confidence. F@#$%$#@#$%$#@!#$#@#$%K I had a new swing every time I addressed a ball. I became a mental case and unbearably frustrated.

Good luck.
This is gold! Now to De-grain years of flipping
No excuses now Paul! Even under lockdown you can practice these drills with a stick (just take the handle off a broom) and get doing the exercises.
Rory is class at floating back to his left side BEFORE he begins the downswing. So he moves laterally to the left before he starts the downswing. Then it's turn and burn baby.
… fantastic …
There's more to come Kurt, so stay tuned.
Nice old scythe you have there 👍🙂 Though, i understand that Melhorn and Penick was talking grasswhip. That is different tool and you use more wrist whipping action. Offcource you can cut grass many styles 😉
Well spotted juke. Turns out the scythe is even better than the grass whip at forcing a golfer to feel the correct movements to swing a club.
@@Dstgolf Thank you ☺ Yes, scythe is better if you want to practice more body rotation 👍
My drill I'm trying... 'lock and flex".... Address with legs locked, or as straight as possible, then flex the knees on the downswing.
Interesting Marky, are you a pro or was this drill suggested to you by a pro?
Bertie: you must agree with concept / ideas behind stack and tilt ?
When is next update??
Looks like Ben's shoulder plane into the back swing is maybe too flat?
When is the next video
I have been "mowing" my lawn with a scythe ever since I moved to Italy; joking about how it has helped my golf swing. and now I know the rest of the story.
Good stuff!
I´m missing one-handed drills, drills with very heavy clubs or very flexible shafts or shaft extensions from the handle.
Every single pro: Head behind the ball with upper torso tilting away from the target at impact
Yes, all that.... but crucially, the shaft trailing behind the lead forearm. That's the bit that gives club face control.
Forward press when putting! It’s the business
Dan Whittaker just posted a video on your compression aid club. Was very misleading 😡
Kudos to Ben. That scythe swing is tight!
You reap what you sew.
Ahhh...guys there's a much better and safer "training device" readily available at the same sporting goods store you bought your clubs. Yeah...it's called a Hockey stick!!!
Oops sorry...perhaps I jumped the gun with the last comment...my bad!!!
I have wasted 20 years hating this game because my understanding of the golf swing was light years away from this idea. I had a club head speed of 151 when I was 25 and could not bring myself to play over 50% speed because I had no clue whatsoever how the swing worked and no confidence. F@#$%$#@#$%$#@!#$#@#$%K
I had a new swing every time I addressed a ball. I became a mental case and unbearably frustrated.
