As an engineer and a senior member of a 4WD Club I agree with your point.....partially. firstly the elephant in the room, that recovery point installation isnt fit for purpose, and yes the tow point on the vehicle is far superior, if I inspected that car before a club drive I would declare to the owner that its not fit and strongly reccomend they get it properly installed. BUT, not all vehicles have snatch recovery rated tow points, often they are only suitable for flat towing and many do in fact have fairly weak tie down points, and heres the real problem, when a vehicle needs recovering on the track we always instruct the driver to remain in the vehicle, but this creates an issue where those outside the vehicle may not know it well enough to clearly identify the recovery points, so bright colours make it really easy for them, especially if the car is covered with mud, so if the tow point on your vehicle is professionaly assesed as suitable for ALL types of recovery, including snatch recoveries, get a can of spray paint and paint it a bright colour, also, if you have a recovery point fitted get it professionally assesed before you use it, and whilst your about it make sure that the rest of your recovery equipment is properly rated to your car.

From South Africa I disagree with you entirely. Prpoerly attached at the correct point, through through chassis welded mounting supports, at least 2 / attachment points is done correctly.. don't advise people based on incorrectly / badly fitted accessories. Tie downs are tie downs snatch rated attachment points and their correct and proper fixing to the vehicle are an entirely different thing.

As an 4×4 off-roader i refer manufacturer tow points over can't tell you many times they saved my life and I have pulled many people out of a ditch and I must say nothing compares to manufacturer tow points but they could make it more of an easier access point for them especially if you in knee high in mud.

Thank you 👍 I've been arguing about this for years.
I've never heard of anyone breaking, bending or damaging the factory points.
And yes, if people must insist on them , the new Kaon ones for Prado/FJ Cruiser do utilise the existing tow points, as for the rest of the pretty coloured ones, and yes even the expensive 'name' brand ones, absolute waste of money. Well done.

Friend of a friend broke down in a half ton chevy truck about 4 miles out in the desert, southern AZ. We went out to grab him with my friend's k20, and we pulled him from his front tow hooks with a chain. Went up a big hill, he started to roll back at the exact second my friend started to gun it to make it up and one of those hooks sheared straight off and flew sideways never to be seen again. Kind of an extreme scenario but it'll happen. I'd bet anything this same weakness exists with aftermarket recovery points as well. Ive been towed a bunch of times out of some rough spots from the exact same tow hooks on my own rig, never had an issue. Shock loading is gonna break stuff eventually, you've got to be smart about how you're pulling and be aware that you can't always avoid something breaking.

YEEESSSSSSSSS ! Favourite video ever. Been saying this for years. If you search videos on ACTUAL recovery loads, in REAL recovery situations, you only need a half decent pair of tow points with a bridle. AMPLE, but not red or yellow 🙄 so must be only for tie down.

This is why I like watching you vids, I not even own a prado, You always give real good advice, which I have taken on board with maintenance and general 4wd driving. Thanks for putting the time in to make great videos in a time when accessory companies and social influencers try to tell you what you need to buy to go 4wd driving. I was told by a sale person once that you can not recover from something that was welded and needed to buy their product so I ask why can you recover from your tow bar? He seem not to have an answer for that.

We winched the Hilux n80 with camper trailer full of gear from a mates vehicle weighing about 4.3ton 150m through black soil mud 500mm deep using factory tow points for 2.5 hours and after inspection with my mechanic son on the hoist later on there was no twist, no cracks no problems at all! This guy is absolutely correct! Don’t be brainwashed about these aftermarket expensive rated tow points when your factory ones will do the job no problem at all on a Toyota that is. I can’t go off other brands. They will argue until they go blue in the face but we proved it. Yes that’s 4.3 ton winched on factory mounts…

Those factory tow points are the only solid things about a Prado. Toyota designed the tow points solid like that because they know Prados would always get stuck offroad. 🤣
But yeah, not all 4wds have good factory tow points like that model Prado, most are fairly light duty and are actually tie down points or for light towing, never for extreme recovery situations like snatching or winching off.

But regardless of what your vehicle is equipped with, if you don’t understand sling angles and recovery forces, you’re gonna be dangerous. Like this video. Get used to it, 4wding/off-roading in this country is going gangbusters and won’t slow down, it’ll get worse before it gets better - that’s a big if. Unfortunately businesses that look after the off-roading fraternity don’t get it right either so always double check the work. As for recovery I wouldn’t let anyone snatch me period - unless it was the old man.

Good move, take it out stock first, if you need mods to to what you plan to do, it will become apparent and you can get them later. I have been impressed with my new MUX bone stock, the only upgrade I am considering is decent tyres. Only small percentage of 4x4's get sent beyond their stock limits, even fewer brand new ones. A lot of mods designed for offroad make the vehicle worse on road where they spend most of their time anyway. I reckon how you drive is way more important.

I wish I’d kept them but I did do set of stress calcs based on the complete tow train i.e. kinetic rated rope, D rings, side pull, straight pull and 5mph snatch. Basically the rope will break before Prado recovery points. I also took into account that the bolts on aftermarket rated recovery points are in shear. All in all, the aftermarket recovery points are a waste of money.

Interesting. In general I agree 😜
You could manufacture a truck specific snatch attachment point if you really wanted to but you would have to do a bit of engineering and testing for every application.
Chassis steel isn’t typically mild steel. You can attach plates to it if you spread the load out correctly - including multiple bolts and a long plate extending much further back. Many truck manufacturers expressly prohibit drilling holes in the chassis however 😜
Also there’s clamping force where the attachment is way stronger if the multiple bolts are correctly tightened to ensure a friction bond between the two plates.
You would probably require gussets on the other side of the chassis steel. Bit of a snag on box section?
When you sit down and consider the effort required to do it correctly you realize just how deficient the orange plate is 😂

I think a lot of folks don’t understand that the factory recovery point is DELIBERATELY on a part of the car that is sacrificial (the crossmember) compared to the main body of the chassis. Recovery is pointless if it means the chassis will be destroyed in the process. In addition, recovery points, bolted on, massively increase the pressure (called it PSI if you like) on that part of the chassis where the bolts are fixed. So much of what we see is people wanting to adorn their vehicle with bright painted bolt ons.

  • @MJMAC

ffs I'm not a vehicle technician. I'm not a 4x4 expert and I don't even have a popular youtube channel so feel free to ignore my common sense and basic knowledge of physics and steel work. I've been using those "tie down" points on my vehicle for towing couriers back up my steep wet clay driveway they never should have driven down, snatching mates out of wet sand, dry sand and mud. They're only on the front though. On the back I just slip each end of a tree protector over my tow bar (not the tow ball, the steel bar that the hitch comes off that forms the rear bar work) and slide it down to where the mount points attach to the frame. As for ratings, all I know if I distribute the force across two points, I halve the load on each point. Reckon I'd snap my 8 ton snatch strap before I pulled either "tie down point" out of the frame of my 4x4 at the front or pulled the tow bar and rear bar off the frame at the back. Pretty sure if you sprayed the "tie down points" bright yellow, firetruck red or lime green and slapped a sticker on it 99% of the "experts" would shut up.

Yes, but what you guy's fail to realize is, if you go away on a 2 day trip by yourself down to the local river bed and load up your truck with 5 spare wheels, 2 high lift jacks, 4 gas bottles, 2 fully stocked fridges, a selection of 47 different cast iron pots and pans, the twin roof top tents and the dog ! ... That factory "tie down point" is gonna need all the help it can get 👍🤣

You should have mentioned to viewers that not all tie down points are welded on like the tow/recovery one in your video.... Quite a few are weak as piss and only bolted on with mild steel 17mm head bolts. It pays to check.

When I visit my inlaws in the U.S.A, I see quite a few 4wds with bullbars that have welded recovery points on them. Most are manufactured and some are owner mods.
This makes more sense than to recover from than from the factory or a/market recovery points because there is a lateral support through the bar and the mount points along the chassis are well placed.
It'd be cool to see an Arb bar with those built in...

Got an NX Pajero DID. Being a monocoque chassis, they don't make aftermarket recovery point kits for these vehicles. The two towing points under the front of the vehicle is good enough for any recovery. Mitsubishi don't state this in the manual but mitsubishi Australia have stated that these two points are more than adequate for recovering your vehicle even though the book says otherwise.

    Excellent piece of work.
You may have confused some with facts an logic but for the rest of us, that was excellent.
I have often puzzled this question over.
We are told by the un-educated that they are tie down points not recovery points. OK, tie down to what and when. "Oh, they are used when they are shipping the vehicles by sea." Oh, OK, so why don't all cars have tie down points then?
Toyota sell their 4x4's to all sorts of countries where lot's of people can't read Japanese or English or in fact, can't read at all.
Toyota know exactly what customers are going to use those loops for.
I think it is blatantly obvious what they are for.
Not sure where the expression "Tie down point." Comes from but I suspect it was invented by people trying to sell aftermarket extra's, or, as you said, it is for legal reasons.

Anyone who calls those tie down points have never transported a vehicle without driving it. You don’t tie a vehicle down from the frame, you tie it down from the suspension or tires to a trailer or whatever your transporting it on.

Love those aftermarket bolt on hooks, they hang down low to catch on trees and rocks for that sudden stop on that outback track. They add weight, waste money, perfect to prove you have no idea.

I bolted mine in place during my front end build and then when everything checked out and fit good with no fouling and easy access to all components around it I cleaned the area and bolted back on and welded all around it.
Never bent never broken even when dropped onto rocks and doing angled pulls.

Why do you recommend the KOAN recovery points I looked at them on the website after you recommended them for the Prado and have a really thin twist point they looks like it would take less force to twist and snap? and they use the same mounting points/ bolt holes as the other coloured ones?
