As a ADK/upstate NY off road explorer for 50 years, my experiences are that it is hard to find legit free backwoods camping. NY is nothing like the famed BLM lands of the west. Most dirt roads are either private with posted signs and gates, or NYS lands with few overnight camping areas, they are out there, not as simple as you’d think. The woods of NY are far more guarded and posted than what you see on you tube.
@@ruffroads5392 As I recall you can reserve on the DEC website. We just drove in and found an empty space. We figured if anything was full we would just make our way out into the empty parts. We are leave no trace campers.
Looks like great fun....hey, you sound exactly like me when I say 'water' or 'coffee' so you must be from LI. We vacationed in upstate Schoharie County area as kids for years, so seeing your off-road camping trip has brought back tons of great memories.
I grew up in Mddleburgh NY. We spent countless days/nights camping in and around Schoharie county and all surrounding areas. Vroman's Nose is a destination for many tourists...especially this time of year. The views are breathtaking.
This looks awesome. I am down on LI so as you say, takes hours to get anywhere good. I am dying to take the wife and kids somewhere upstate to do some camping with my 4Runner!
@@OverlandCommand Thanks for your reply. That makes sense. And thanks again for your video! Before this I never knew of ANY DEP/DEC public lands in NYS that allowed motorized vehicles besides snowmobiles. You got me looking into things and because of that I just learned of the Trans NJ trail... 450 miles of off roading that runs the entire length of NJ, from up near Port Jervis/Matamoras all the way down to Cape May. Takes 3 days to complete. Might be able to do it in 2.
Just came across your channel, excellent video! I love the content. So many of these channels get off topic and have too much garbage and or non-camping related non-overland related content. Keep it up! Would love to know where the camping area was.
@@roberturban2934 I will be making more. This past year was a big transition as I moved from New York to Georgia, relocated OC World HQ, and embarked on a new career. More content coming, I promise....
@@OverlandCommand but then how did you know this specific area of DEC land was for overlanding/off highway vehicle use? thats the issue I'm having with finding off roading/overlanding/OHV trails in upstate new york. It is so much easier in other states like CO, TX, NM, UT.
Absolutely awsome. We do similar in the Berkshires. Great times
We loved this area on our trip to Newfoundland. Hope to get back and do more exploration up there sometime soon. Thank you for sharing!
Do you by any chance have directions to this area?

How do you get there
