This is an idiotic idea. Cut out a major highway in favor of a "grid" system. Aka, force motorists who want to just get through the city to stop at 20 lights routed through the 'hood. Reminds me of Clark Griswold when he took a "tour"' of St. Louis. Glad I don't live in NYS anymore.
Those neighborhoods would be the hood if you didn’t build those highways. Also if you are going across the city, you shouldn’t be going through downtown, you should be going around the city, not through it
All bicyclists get is a glorified sidewalk which forces bicyclists to stop at every cross street and get run over by cars turning right, or cars pulling up to a signal. Yeah, it's really safer for pedestrians to cross an at-grade arterial instead of crossing a grade-separated freeway. LMAO!
Are you sure? Because there are two arguments against the grid: 1. All the traffic now on 81 will go AROUND Syracuse, so Destiny and the 7th North St. hotels will go out of business. And... 2. All the traffic now on 81 will STILL GO THROUGH Syracuse, resulting in massive traffic jams. Everything can't go AROUND Syracuse and THROUGH it at the same time. This is highway engineering, not quantum physics. Pick one.
@@TheCNYMike Traffic which has no need to stop in Syracuse will use 481, going around the city, not having to deal with the lowered speed limits and dangerous interchanges that exist. The traffic which needs to get to areas of the city north of 690 can still do this on the highway, as 81 north of the 81-690 interchange will not be torn down. This allows for a highway connection to Destiny, and to the hotels that you mention. This will increase travel times by just about 15 minutes, which is not a large change. I agree with Energy Sword Sunday, this will hopefully increase the walkability of the city, encouraging more people to move into the city itself. Combine this with the new Micron deal and I see a bright future for Syracuse in the coming decades. Seeing these arguments parroted by people who do not understand the plan(not yourself, but OP) is incredibly frustrating. There are very real concerns about the community grid, but almost none of them relate to transit and travel times.
So these people are removing a US interstate that goes through the city and replacing it with NO interstate and have everyone on street level? How are trucks going to get through? Is there a clear path with no stops for them?
There is an interstate bypass that goes the full way around the city for trucks and others passing through. There's basically no reason for the interstate that tears through downtown to continue to exist.
@@AGP335 You're referring to 481 and 690 I assume. Yeah, that'll take care of a lot of it but there are still going to be backups for commercial traffic that has to go into and through the city. I'm sure they said they did but people do like to lie to get what they want. Either way, traffic in Syracuse isn't very bad anyway. Not at all.
@@mneugent7658 Any traffic that needs to go through the city will go around on what is now 481. The majority of traffic on 81 does not stop in the city, and this traffic will be rerouted onto 481. 81 north of 690 will still exist, so it is only the sections north of the 81-481 interchange and south of the 81-690 interchange that will be torn down.

Unless, of course, no one is "forced" to do anything. It's a choice at an exit ramp. And which way you go depends on where you're going in Syracuse when you're heading into it.
They cite these reasons, but the main reason that the interstate is being demolished is that it's really expensive and rather pointless. It goes right through downtown, lowering property values and causing noise and air pollution as well as discouraging residents and students from going and spending money there. All the while it costs the government tons of money to maintain, hence its terrible condition, and has no reason to be there considering there's another interstate that goes around the edge of town and serves the exact same purpose for through traffic.
@@mneugent7658 So what is currently 481 between the two 81-481 interchanges will become 81, and 81 north of the 81-690 interchange in the city will become 81-N, still a highway, and only the sections north of the southern 81-481 interchange and south of the 81-690 interchange will be torn down.
Yea great way to make wayyyy more accidents than there is already leave 81 alone more confusion more, accidents, more injury.... Why dont you guys fix the roads that f**k my car up every time i go a certain way how about the 298 off ramp by destiny that has hundreds of potholes and the roads in the city that need proper fixing instead of puting a little asphalt in it and not packing it down whatsoever
Because the viaduct is deteriorating, and someday it could get so bad it would be closed to traffic permanently. Why not do something before it gets that bad?
The I-81 Syracuse viaduct should be demolished and turned into a tunnel under Syracuse to link I-481, I-690, and I-90 with the rest of the city.
Cool

Those neighborhoods are only the hood because they ran a highway through their neighborhoods
general motors bulldozed the city to make highways back in the 50s. Barely anyone uses the highway and it costs so much tax money to maintain

I-481 (to become I-81) is going to be a congested parking lot since it isn't being widened.
Adding more lanes to highways does not decrease congestion, in fact it's usually the opposite which happens. This is called induced demand.
Get ready for moving through syr to be way way slower, and massive traffic jams.
