THANK YOU SO MUCH!! My mom passed away before she could teach me how to make this. She would make this a lot for us when I was growing up. It was my favorite food growing up and a comfort food for me.
This is one of my favorite Thai dishes that is never seen on a restaurant menu! I used to eat it at Thai parties or weddings. Now i can make it myself!!
When I was little. I use to ask my mom to make that brown egg dish. This is one of my favorite and it always bring back memories for me too. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Cooking is art. No matter how many video tutorials I follow I just can't learn cooking. Following step by step should work but it is different than the video each time.
Not me bc there's variations of this & I doubt it's called the same per asian country. I just saw a short, clicked, & attempted to follow. So, this is on my feed now. I'm lao, & I really don't remember growing up on pork belly. Although I'm sure my elders used alotta fatty meats for this, I just don't remember it being that fatty. Bc as an asian, I think I've always been "funny" w/ food. Even for an asian, lol. Anyways, that short said ,"this'll bring you back." I cut up alotta ginger, & was surprised how much kick it had through all that cooking & how small I cut it up. But it was that taste that brought me back. I prob made a more diluted version but it was still pretty yummy. Almost $30 worth of pork belly... At least it's lasted me a week +
In Vietnam we have a variation of this dish and it's also a staple, pretty much always the first thing I think of when buying pork belly. We don't use five spices though, just fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, onion, and garlic. I'm gonna try your version, it looks delicious, and I love the adding of tofu, that's genius.
There’s also a similar dish that you can find all over China and Taiwan called hongshaorou, the liquid is more saucy and less soupy and is usually just flavored with soy sauce but also incredibly delicious
You don’t understand how grateful I am for this video. This is one of my families favorite dishes. I can now make this for my family. 💙 Thank you so much. 🙏🏽
I was just thinking about Kai Palo. My father used to make it when I was growing up and it was one of my favorite dishes. I’m definitely going to have to make this now. 😃
Pailin your making me hungry....! I've make this dish a lot. This dish is easy and simple to make. I do it a bit differently and get more of the aroma when I wake up the next day. The way that I cook it is by using a slow cooker to cook them. I would also add carrots, scallions, potatoes and dried red/hot peppers and set the cooking temperature to low the previous night and it will be ready the next day. It is the best way to cook whenever having kids.
Your right..every thai's favorite all the way from childhood. I make my own now but my mom makes it better of course lol. Next day batch is better..yes. egg will get darker and infused..so awsome! I also splash a little fish sauce on rice at the end.
In Vietnam we have a very similar dish, and instead of the brown sauces you are adding, we use fish sauce (pretty iconic to Vietnamese cuisine lol) and coconut water instead of the chicken or pork broth. The coconut water and the caramelized sugar would intensify the color to the pork and eggs.
I saw someone use that coco soda stuff in this recipe. I thought I could find it in this local grocery store chain, in the "international" section :/, in the Spanish folks section. But nope. I left & I thought damn it, I bet sprite would work. Bc improvise. Prob not. Prob close enough. But I was like wever. I'm gonna try some sugared powder that's just sitting away in the cabinet. 🤷🏻♀️ I still liked it. But cooking down meats, they seem like the have an excess of water ..
It's interesting to see how braised pork belly and eggs are in every East Asian cuisine. In Vietnamese, we have the exact same procedure to cook this dish. The only difference is we use fish sauce and sometimes garlic to season the broth. I really love being Asian hahaha
“Elementary school cafeteria” and “so good” are phrases not often heard together! 😂 I have an Instant Pot and I am thinking I could minimize the dishwashing by steaming the eggs in the Instant Pot before starting the stew, and by sautéing the pork in the Instant Pot.
I just found your channel today and I'm kicking myself for not knowing about it earlier! I've been dying for more Thai recipes, since I sadly don't have much experience with authentic Thai cuisine, but I've been itching to fix that. I can't wait to try some of these- thank you for sharing your knowledge and smiles with the world!
One of the best soups in the world, first ate it in Hong Kong, incredible. I believe this is a Chinese recipe but the Thai way has more punch to into it imo.
Ahh this is a favorite. My Viet parents have something similar but using parts that show up in beef stew or curry like stewing beef or carrots or onions.
Ms. Pailin, Thank you for doing this video. I'm now reminiscing sitting in my school cafeteria chowing down on it. You're absolutely right! This dish is every kids favorite in Thailand. Sure brings back good memories!! - A fan in San Diego, CA.
In Hmong, its called Nqaij Qab Zib, or Sweet Pork. Similar to this as well, but we let it braise in the rich sauce until it clings onto the eggs and meat. So delicious!
That dish is looking so delicious and I have to try making it and I have an Instant Pot and is beginning to use it more often to cook in and especially with the accessories I have for it. Boiled eggs is my favorite so far and I use the appliance to make them which I use in my salads.
This soup has a pleasant spiciness. My European palate experienced something very fine today. Thai cuisine ❣️. Greetings also to Adam. Thank you for the recipe idea.
Love this recipe! I come back to it all of the time when I’m craving this soul food of SEA dish. When I can’t find good pork belly or a just craving something lighter I’ve been using chicken wings. Other cuts of pork don’t really work well but the chicken wings have great texture and make the broth nice and silky. Thanks as always for such great and fun to watch videos.
Pailin, thank you, from Melbourne. Cooked this tonight, absolutely delicious. Now to find a Thai salad to serve along with this dish. Keep up the great work.
I recently asked mom to share her recipe for brown egg soup 🤣 she sent me Pailin's. Watching this video I can literally smell it from childhood. I will be making this for my fiancé!
It's kinda similar to the dish here in the philippines. We called it 'Adobo' same ingridients but the difference is we use less sugar and we add vinegar on it.
I regret not paying attention when my mom and sisters cooked Thai food when I was growing up; and they were trying to teach me how to cook. My mom and sisters made this dish, weekly. Now, my girls who are half Thai love this side of who they are, and always want to eat Thai food, most of the time. I can’t make this dish. When we went to Thailand, they ordered this dish multiple times.
I was watching this video because I wanted to learn how to make my favourite Thai dish and I realized you had the same bowl and tongs as me. Turns out you also live in Vancouver and that just blew my mind!! 😂 I'm so thankful for your videos because I've been trying to make more Thai food because I am Thai and should know how to make these dishes! Thank you so much!
New subscriber here. So belated congratulations on having a 6 month old baby! Your bubbliness is even more amazing, despite the lack of sleep from having a baby! 😍
As a new subscriber and horrible cook (me), but i got an instant pot and love pork belly, you sold me. I'm going to make this tomorrow night! It seems to have everything I love. As for you, great presentation with just enough comedy to make me laugh and laziness i can identify with, and even educational (I learned new Thai words today, yay). Loved it!

I love this dish. My Thai friend in Nottingham cooked it for me it before.
All the brown sauces is THE perfect description haha. Basically me whenever I braise anything

I love that dish!!! I had it in Thailand for the first time. It’s one of my faves!
My buddy married a Thai woman, and while I lived with them, she would make this, and sweet spicy eggs, amazing noodles. It was dope.
“Elementary school cafeteria” and “so good” are phrases not often heard together! 😂
I have an Instant Pot and I am thinking I could minimize the dishwashing by steaming the eggs in the Instant Pot before starting the stew, and by sautéing the pork in the Instant Pot.
that's how you know she went to quite fancy elementary school.

My FAVOURITE!! My mum makes this so much I never get sick of it. FYI, Ottolenghi has a surprisingly great version of this in Nopi.
Not interested in"Otto's" version quite frankly!
I had a craving for Kai Palo after moving far from my parents, so hopefully this tastes just as good. Childhood memories 🥰
Ahh this is a favorite. My Viet parents have something similar but using parts that show up in beef stew or curry like stewing beef or carrots or onions.
Yes the Vietnamese version with beef is delicious, like a 5 spice beef stew sometimes with hot pepper.
Yep! one of my favourite dishes growing up in Thailand. Love it when you admit 'laziness' and 'my way' cause that's how it is in my house. lol
This recipe is not unlike some Chinese recipe that I like. Thank you very much for the demo.
Ms. Pailin,

Like pailin said, it's so easy to make and tastes so good, so there's no reason not to have it this way.
I am trying to learn words from all Asiatic languages. I learned a bit of Vietnamese now, thank you!
