    I think the reason the Orville is so successful is because like you said, Seth McFarline respects and loves Star Trek, so he'll do Trek fans good.

      Seth is a mega star trek fan... it is basically his religion. He has never made anything funny about Star Trek on his shows... Star Wars, other movies.... have all been comically parodied and ridiculed with his excessive need to be funny.... but you can tell Seth zealously worships Star Trek.

    STD is following the modern formula of most of the modern shows. Like the new Battlestar Galactica or GOT, a continuous story arc that basically involves unhappy people being mean to each other. The Orville is optimistic and presents a future world that you would want to live in, and a crew you would love to serve with.

    • @BullSession
      @BullSession  6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      that's basically the thrust of what MacFarlane says in the interview I took some clips from. (though, he doesn't name Discovery of course). Bringing sci-fi back to the happy place it was in before everything had to be grim-dark.
      I actually quite enjoyed Battlestar Galactica back in the day though.

    Season two is even better. Every episode has more and more to offer, and they have fun guest stars each episode like Ted Danson and Jason Alexander. I usually describe it as "Star Trek for normal people." It is NOT a parody of Star Trek. It's not a parody at all. It's just a sci-fi show that has slightly more comedy than Star Trek, but a lot less than, say Red Dwarf.

    Word on the grapevine is that Macfarlane has stated for Season 2, he plans to shift the series even further towards sci-fi driven plots and less emphasis on comedy.
    From what I've gathered, Macfarlane deliberately placed more comedy in the opening 6 episodes so he could convince FOX it was a "parody of Trek" and not a serious sci-fi series similar to Trek. If you recall, the trailers for the series billed it as pretty much a televised "Galaxy Quest," but by episode 6, the comedy had become virtually non-existent (honestly, no more than it was in TNG). Apparently, since the network didn't seem to mind the shift to more serious sci-fi, Macfarlane plans to have season 2 lean further in that direction.

    • @BullSession
      @BullSession  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yea, that wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. MacFarlane is a savvy business man.

      P I honestly have seen and read about this planned shift today for the first time and it absolutely was what I thought watching the 2nd season including last nights episode. The more serious tone is very noticeable and if it stays like that, it will make The Orville as highly enjoyable as SG1 for me (sry sci-fi nerd here, love trek but stargate and SW more). This show rocks

      @@ThePrimeMinisterOfTheBlock Post-S2 comment:
      The rumors were true. Season 2 shifted further away from comedy and took a darker, more sci-fi approach, even introducing a 2-part story.
      Season 2's episode _"Home"_ is an absolute delight; arguably the best episode of the season with guest appearances by Robert Picardo (The Doctor on _Star Trek: Voyager_ ), John Billingsly (Dr. Phlox on _Star Trek: Enterprise_ ) and Molly Hagan (the Jem'Hadar Eris in _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_ )

    I just finished binge watching the first season of The Orville the other day and watched the first couple episodes of the second season last night. I'm loving it so far. During many of the episodes, I found myself thinking about parts of various episodes in terms of the Star Trek universe...
    "Captain isn't (usually) supposed to go on away missions!"
    "Why don't they just use the transporter room?"
    "What about the Prime Directive?!"
    but had to keep reminding myself "this isn't the Trek universe!"
    They do seem to take extra liberties in bending the rules of physics, or doing things that don't quite make sense. For example in the episode with the 2-D portal, they allowed the shuttle itself to flatten into 2 dimensions, but used a bubble to keep the occupants of the shuttle in 3-D. Wouldn't the ship fail to function when all the electrical components get crushed into 2-D?
    All in all, it's a great show. It feels a lot like Star Trek, even though it's not. We need MORE!

    Am rewatching all the episodes again. In hindsight I must admit the comedy felt a little forced, The drama a little stilted. But season 2 came out much stronger. The humour flowed better, the characters felt more natural. I think that they realised being funny AND serious wasn’t working, they have to be serious at times and funny at other times. Now it’s brilliant.

    It's rather interesting how The Orville and STD are basically polar opposites. While STD calls itself Trek and tries to act like a serious entry in the series, it barely has any touching points with any previous Trek. You know, beyond taking the name and insignia.
    Meanwhile, excepting the amount and type of humor, The Orville bleeds Trek in every aspect and at every step, despite not being Trek "officially".
    Hope we get a dozen more seasons, at least.

    Orville is basically the MCU to Star Trek Discovery's DCU. One is full of joking, full of optimism and focuses on character over plot. The other one is dark, gritty and focuses on plot over character. Both can work but one is just more appealing than the other.

  • @WilliamHostman
    @WilliamHostman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    coming at this as a die polytreknic, i honestly like Orville more as a setting. Better continuity. More relateable characters. More optimistic tone. Discovery is great in seasons 3 & 4, but merely very good in seasons 1 & 2, and not a good continuity fit. Picard is great, but dark, pessimistic, and while character driven, not aiming to feel like trek shows past, but life after starfleet. Lower Decks feels like, "oh, Sh**, Seth did it, we need a response!" And it is a good response, but still, not optimistic, tho not the dark pessimism of Picard. The only otimistic trek right now is Prodigy, but i want more Orville. And, if Seth can't do more himself, a spinoff. I love them all... but Orville is the kind of SF I longed for since Ent season 3. And the ending of Season two was stories of hope.... showng Orville can have a dark edge... but they also won against long odds....

    This show works so well because it lacks the pompous, dry, bureaucratic quality of the Next Generation. The characters are flawed, and the situations are well-grounded in relatable situations. In this respect, it's a lot more like TOS than TNG.
    When Seth is making better "Star Trek" at FOX than Star Trek, there's something wrong at CBS.

    I love the Orville. It's the first new trek since ENT. I feel like the humor was heavier handed early on but then in production they must have realized they have an actually good show without it and decided to tone it down a little. I like the blend of 85% trek 15% McFarlane, especially since he is a canon trek character.

    I think the Orville has the ability to be the Star Trek we have all been waiting for decades. The writing is reminiscent of TNG, the special effects are pretty damn good and the acting is good. What kills it is the shitty jokes and references to the 21st century. I know this is supposed to be a spoof, but it has so much more potential than that. In Star Trek the characters are meant to be aspirational but have their own faults that make them human. In the Orville characters are making out of place jokes and references it tense situations essentially killing any immersion. The Krill could make for perfect vilains. They could act almost like the xindi from Enterprise. Pushing the crew to their limits and testing their morality as they must stop an almost unstoppable enemy. The show need this in the second season otherwise I fear it will be cancelled like Enterprise was. I hope Seth McFarlane pulls off something good in season 2. Because if not, something truly special could be lost.

      Yea, I can totally see how the jokes could be a problem for some, though they weren't really for me, and I felt that they were kept to a minimum in most of the more serious situations. This is a Seth MacFarlane show and Fox *loves* him, so I don't think this show will get cancelled unless it tanks in the ratings which it won't if the response from Star Trek fans so far is any indication. Here's hoping the second season is even better than the first!

    I think Orville needs a switch-style episode. This would be one that the ship is tooling through space, doing something mundane, relaxing, making a few wise cracks (very few) to disarm the viewers. They catch something unusual on their long range sensors, and feel like investigating. When they get there, they are suddenly immersed in a hyper stressful, critical situation; one that they must muster all their skills to overcome. At the end, they defeat the threat, and head for home in a somber mood, pondering the events. I'm thinking something like the "Doomsday Machine", or an opponent that can only be stopped by thinking & working "out of the box". Oh, and the antagonist (if any) can't have Kazon hair. Think serious.

    • @BullSession
      @BullSession  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would be great. The Kree episode was almost that, but we still got some car insurance jokes here and there (which I was A-ok with, but still)

    • @__-fm5qv
      @__-fm5qv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I think they could do that and end one episode on a dramatic cliffhanger. Just to switch up the pace and the stakes once halfway through the season. But then go back to business as normal after.

    Unlike a lot of people, I actually like every series of Star Trek and place each series in it's own bubble, place and time, if you will. However, I was just curious as to what The Orville was about. I finally started watching and completed all of the shows in 2022. And, I must admit, I am a huge fan. The production, casting, writing, EVERYTHING, was done quite well. I will watch as many episodes as they produce. Excellent job!!!

    The thing about macfarlane's work is he was told to create a fox show based off it's most popular (and later long running) series, The Simpsons. He LITERALLY made multiple series that were made to be parodies of another animated comedy series. When he was allowed to stretch his creative thoughts, he created one of the better Si-Fi series within the last few years.

    Closest we'll probably came to a Galaxy Quest TV show. Hmm. Don't know quite how to feel about that. Also, really hope that more TNG era actors guest star in the series. I'd love to see Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn (preferably playing a Moclan since they're so reminiscent of Klingons), Gates McFadden, Johnathan Frakes, Kate Mulgrew, etc.

    • @BullSession

    From the moment I heard about this show, I knew I was going to like it. And the humour in the first episode just helped to cement the fact that The Orville was going to be good and just getting better. "So it's an anti-banana ray? Does it work on all fruits? How about salads?" lol And "Happy Arbor Day" or the better line "You've got wood!" lol

    *Heart warming, imaginaytion inspiring and adventurous,* that's all I expect from a Star Trek take... The Orville is a love message to Star Trek fans. For me this is especially true after that huge flop of Picard usurpation (along STD - which is surely not as bad as Picard, it's just another Sci-Fi having its own "personality" which is _not_ Star Trek)! Finally, a real Star Trek... Not because it's "like" TNG, no, not at all (personally I wasn't a fan of TNG, coming from the very 1st series with Kirk since it got repeated several times after its finale during the following decade in my pre-teen youth). The main reason is that as opposed to most series nowadays, it doesn't focus on spewing gore or twisted dark plot/ambiance nor boring "Soap-like" intimate relations and gossips of which most TV series seem to have copy the same script to adapt (during its "era", I already found that TNG was trending that way and I wasn't a fan of this)... As if they're all produced by the same "clan" transforming their laziness into marketing efficiency, in order to force viewers into cheap and incoherent emotions that are most of the time childish and non believable while all having the same "social" narrative as a canvas (for instance Netflix productions have such a tendency).
    *The main reason(s) imho - Because it bears a sense of adventure and discovery* (of Galaxies, species and relations with aliens, cosmic bodies and events, etc., rather than relational intimacies "studies", twisted mind sets and plots for easy shocking emotions), in engaging and heartfelt stories with memorable characters, in a future filled with hope rather than witnessing a worsen humanity having even more flaws and weaknesses than nowadays. But most importantly, if I want to see a Star Trek, I *do not* want to be lectured at nor educated by pretentious producers (or pseudo "critics" trying to categorize everything into boxes and giving a bad mark when they're not able to do so, by lack of imagination and open mindedness): I have other multiple sources for such matters, I don't want to rely on some propaganda machine nor a fantasy lore forcing one sole pretermined narrative that's shared among most other series on those matters, especially when it's done with utter nonsense - i.e. ST Picard; I want to flee from our nowadays realities and stupidities for a moment, as I want to get *_entertained_* in order to refuel my psyche rather than being submitted to lazy shocking and/or nonsensical emotions (and that I can't feel when it's done as cheap shots over an imparted time of an episode, only there for filling the gaps of a lack of imagination). *I want the adventure to be the center of interest,* rather than soap-like bedroom crap that I don't relate to (since most of nowadays TV series characters are all forgivable and replaceable anyways, via scenarios that are freakingly boring, unreal/incoherent and uninteresting - unless one would nurture a seed of voyeurism).
    The Orville is telling us to "hang on" in these corporate SJW totalitarian days, which is quite needed! More Star Trek than Star Trek but it's not Star Trek... Yes, MacFarlane has a special sense of humor :)
