Robbie... I still get the shivers every time I hear Lucy perform this song. Even knowing in advance the powerful crescendo that is coming at 2:40 in song, it still floors me. Everything before that is like building a ramp, getting ready for the jump into hyper-drive... full forte, long holds, big runs, giant chorus, it takes the listener to another place and time. Once I realized this originated from a theme from Rachmaninoff's second concerto, a concerto I am very familiar with and I don't know how I never made the connection myself, I just got an idea to make an evolutionary journey kind of thing with this song and how it found it's way to Lucy.

Amazing... stuck for words, this song and her performance really touched something deep inside. Thanks for the backstory. I had run across a reactor with formal music training. He dissected song using Celine as example. I prefer Lucy over Celine. She over uses her physical performance to the point it is distracting. The key change is legendary in music circles. At end of song, you can tell Lucy gave it her all... held nothing back. Last 1/3 of song was multi-octave, forte, long holds, breathing is so important to pull it off. Even Celine has a struggle on the crescendo and is more out of breath than Lucy.

That is why every new song is better than the last. I don't know that Lucy compares herself to others singers. I think she wants to be as 'good as' and 'better than' other singers. Lucy is her own toughest competition. Besides having a 5 octave vocal range and perfect pitch, she has mastered breathing. She can hold a high/low, loud/soft, short/long note and never appear she is breathing. Everything depends on diaphragm breathing; air in, air out over vocal cords. I sang for a long time, but Lucy was out singing me when she was 14. I didn't have her gift or 1/4 her talent. Nothing but greatest respect for Lucy.
Robbie, this is an excellent 'nuts and bolts' dissection of 'All By Myself' from the perspective of professional music coach or composer. He uses Celine Dion's performance and breaks everything down. I'm not sure if it's this one, or another, talk of her getting physically anchored on stage before the high notes at end. Celine has problems doing it as do many others. In her live performances, I feel she really over does the prancing and stomping, and waving arms and hands... it just plain distracts from the story. I really prefer Lucy's rendition of 'All By Myself' over Celine's. There are other covers Lucy does that are improvements over original songs. Her songs by Whitney Houston are also better. I tell reactors that Lucy doesn't imitate, she improves the song. Many of them have been re-composed by her label I'm thinking to take full advantage of her incredible voice. Celine is good, but it is actually just a cover she did from Eric Carmen, not the other way around. Same goes for 'Power Of Love' by Jennifer Rush (the original artist). I did chat with Jennifer end of last year. She is still around, still has that amazing voice than can fill an auditorium without mics, amps, and speakers.
