Eddie, thank you so much for your fantastically articulate, informative and classy posts. I’ve been an avid viewer (only recently) of your TH-cam posts with Kirby Allison. It has been 27 Years since I have indulged, but feel it is time to re-engage, and I would love to do so with my 20 year old son. Funnily enough my daughter & i were walking down Jermyn street several Saturdays ago when we saw your Dad (who cut a
Fantastic figure) popping into the shop. So I would love to pop into visit you, and be advised by yourself how to proceed

I have that same problem. That being said, picking a selection of five or six and then enjoying each one is part of the experience. A lot of the time I enjoy each one but eighty-five percent of those I won't choose them again for one reason or another.
The ones that do make my cut go into my cigar scrap book. I paste the rings of those cigars I really enjoy into a nice scrap book. It's all good fun really!

I’ve struggled (still do) trying to figure out the right smoke for me. I’ve settled on the Davidoff Grand Cru Robusto. For me it’s worth the price.
I’ve also found so much more goes into the cigar experience. Time, the event, the people, proper storage, proper lighting and did I mention time….not once have I had a pleasurable experience when time was rushed.

The last part. Going to a physical store is half the experience. Smelling the humidor and see the cigar in person before you choose it. It's like being a kid and going to the candy shop. You don't order candy online. You walk to a store and smell that suggary smell and see all the colors of the candy. I only shop online if there is a cigar I can't find in a physical store, and I really want it.

The cigar is inexorably tied to imagery and symbolism. No cigar merchant will do anything to wrest those impressions from you. Like it or not, it is after all the gateway to the business for the vast majority. However, you can't smoke imagery and symbolism, and understanding that is how you separate the tourist from the aficionado.
Only when the merchant recognizes you to belong in the latter category, and only when they themselves are the same, will you have a chance to get the score on this very mysterious product. And there's no way of getting there without years of study, sampling and keeping cigars of all kinds. Despite Sahakian's well meant attempts to give the new customer some reasons to pull the trigger on a purchase here, the fact is that a new smoker will remain clueless.
Therefore, my advice is: Ask the merchant for a regular production cigar that smokes good right now. If they want more information, be completely honest with them. Don't be embarrassed and don't try and fool them into thinking you know what you're doing. Most of the details beyond the answer to this simple question, are not that important in the sense that you will be forced to discover them by smoking cigars to find your preference anyway and there's no way around this. But if the merchant is honest and knowledgeable (and likes you), he or she will know what cigars that are on the shelf smokes good right now, and you simply cannot get better information than that.

Its so sad, and ridiculous that each box needs a warning that "smoking kills". There should just be on sign somewhere in the room. I mean, we are all adults, not everyone is ADDICTED to cigars so there is no need to "quit"; many cigar smokers enjoy a cigar on occasion.

Man just be glad you dont live in Canada. My heart breaks a little every time I buy now, because they've criminalized the beautiful art on the boxes and paper rings. It's all communist grey and plain lettering. No pictures. No character.
