zlozlozlo Well, it is a good thing they changed that if true. Thought this story was as much about the girl and what had broken her as the time travel itself. Every one in life has a moment in time that they would like to fix. It is reassuring that she is given the chance to do just that.

SPOILER To anyone who didn't get the ending, "The audience is left to believe that Kenneth is crazy at this point (after Darius finding out that his "dead" old girlfriend that he was saving was still alive)...but what really happened is that on his first trip back through time, Kenneth did something to save Belinda's life that changed reality as we know it. Since she would have been killed in 2001 by a car crashing into her house, Kenneth changed that fate by crashing a car into her boyfriend's house before Belinda and Kenneth ever dated in that time stream. This was the "I've only done this once before" part of the time traveling ad Kenneth posted. Belinda is alive, but has no memory of dating Kenneth because that never happened in this new reality. Belinda is alive and well but is now married to someone else while Kenneth works in a grocery store trying to put together a new time machine so he can go back to fix things in 2001 again so this time he gets to be with Belinda."... "It is not outright stated, but is implied, that Kenneth and Darius went back in time to save her mom and that Kenneth has now let go of trying to change time and be with Belinda again because he is now with Darius."

I don't know; I think a lot of people didn't like this ending, but this movie really knew how to make me happy in the end; like you want it to be real, but you know that it won't be, but then in the end it's freaking real, and it's like a reward for the people who believed in Kenneth, because I sure believed in him. I guess if you don't like this ending then you have no idea or appreciation for the power of movies to work magic, nor do you understand the things that are magic about reality.

This really hit me hard when I first watched this. I was in the middle of a break up and this kept me going. This will sound very self serving but it's the truth, a man really needs someone he can depend on even if he gets so crazy that he went on and built a time machine. A partner for life who is ready to give you the peace of mind, the right direction, and all the trust you need in case you, yourself lost all of yours.

They were two lonely people who found each other and connected because of a common belief in something. The issue of time travel being real or not is irrelevant.

She lived her life without knowing him better than just in passing, living not far from him, happy with another man, while he worked on a time machine to save her without even knowing about her living on past the time he remembered she dies. So his machine does not erase present timeline. Basically now that he is going back in time with this second girlfriend and they will be changing things together and be happy together, while trying to make life easier and happier for her younger self, because the original girlfriend was already saved and lived his life for years without him. Pretty much a hopeful ending for everyone, rather than happy ending with everything resolved and rosy sunset. They are going into the past to struggle to create a better version, but they are doing it together.
My perspective when he said “I’m going back for you” is he is only focused on her now and loves her and they are going on a mission together, not changing anything, just together in a new dimension

Small anomaly when the boat / time machine disappears: the boarding plank should have fallen into the water. It was only supported at the two endpoints: by the dock and the boat itself. Without the boat it would have fallen.

Saw it last year, had no idea who Aubrey Plaza was prior to that. Really, really liked the film, including the ending. Lawn Dogs has a similar ending but it works much better in this film.
The irony is, we're led to believe the whole time that HE is the one lying; About his dead girlfriend, about everything! When in reality, the entire time, right in front of our faces, SHE'S been the one lying, snooping, sharing his secrets of his with the entire world and manipulating him into thinking he can trust her. And THEN have the audacity at the end the be mad at HIM because she thought HE was lying to her. And even after he found out that SHE was lying, he still loved and accepted her.

someone else pointed out that kenneth's previous time traveling was to alter the accident and save Belinda from her fate which results in her being alive today, and this second time was supposed to be to alter the events so that he could be with her
In the 2012 movie “Safety Not Guaranteed”, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Kenneth (Mark Duplass) set off in a Time Machine back to 2001 …… Next year, 10 years will have passed, bringing the two back to the year of their departure. There are many intriguing questions that remain to be answered …. Here are a few of them: (1) What changes will they have brought about in the “present” over those 10 years? (2) What will happen when the 10-year-older duo encounter their 10-year-younger selves in the present? (3) Will Darius and Kenneth find a note inside the tin in the old truck upon their return? (presumably they will have left one as a test)
Even up to the point where they disappear I was expecting for the boat to blow up. You would really think so with all those gadgets that were just the product of some crazy guy that didn't know what he was doing.

The minute he changes the past with her and her younger self decided to make different choices in her life and decided not to work for magazine and it is gonna screw up their present . she will get erased from the past in front of him (present Darius)and when he get back in the present . she will not know anything about him. and only he remembers this stuff. and what if he decided to make time machine again.
I think his past girlfriend(Belinda). he did save her when he traveled in the past before (as explain in the ad he traveled one time before)and he forgot to check if its work . and decide to build again the time machine and put ad in the newspaper for a partner because he is lonely. In the present so she is alive in the present living her life knowing Kenneth as a weird guy she knows from her past and she do not know him or having a relationship.. and now he found out about her through Darius. this time he decided to go for her (Darius) .

In the 2012 movie “Safety Not Guaranteed”, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Kenneth (Mark Duplass) set off in a Time Machine back to 2001 …… Next year, 10 years will have passed, bringing the two back to the year of their departure. This ending is a Mandela Effect. Darius never went with him and they never showed a working time machine. Just a bright blue flash in the woods.
Even up to the point where they disappear I was expecting for the boat to blow up.
You would really think so with all those gadgets that were just the product of some crazy guy that didn't know what he was doing.

the big mistake of this movie is the ending, which makes the director a mediocre one. He should have left an open ending, free to the viewer's vision.

You could sense this ending from a mile away. This guy makes awful movies.
So beautifull ending and no one even gets it, they died together, safety not guaranteed? The title wouldnt make any sense and the whole movie if thats not the case. The first time he changes time the timeline changes instantly, in the end when they travel and it wont, the others even look around and theres also touching endspeak to audience so they could get the movie. People are hopeless
